BUFFER. FOR LooMs.

MICHAEL MURRAY, 0F SOUTH MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT.
BUFFER FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 258,461, dated May 23, 1882,
Application tiled February 2l, 1881.
To all 'whom zt may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MURRAY, of South Manchester, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buffers for Looms, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l is aview of one end of the lathebeam of a. loom with my improvement attached, and Fig. 2 is a bottom-view of saine.
The letter a denotes a portion ot' the lathebealn; b, the/shuttle, (shown in dotted lines;) c, one ofthe picker-sticks,whoseinlpulse in the direction denoted by the arrow is commonly communicated through the strap d, all
C this in the common and well-understood man- The letter e denotes a small crank, pivoted on the under side ot' the beam, with its lateral arm resting against the back of the pickerstick and pulled inwardly by the springj'. The shoulder g prevents this crank from moving unduly inward. When itis desired to relieve the picker-stick from the action of the crank, it is done by throwing the crank back, as denoted in dotted lines, and this can be done when the lathe-beam is in motion-when it is past the center, so to speak, and the spring holds it in that position. Each end ot' the beam is furnished with this shuttle-buer. The device eases the shock ot' the shuttle in stopping, and so prevents the loosening of the (No model.)
filling on the bobbin and permits the use of a loose or slight tension on the shuttle-binder. The buffer also assists in starting the shuttle on its return travel, and makes the loom operative with less power.
The springfis connected at one end to the lathe-beam by a short leather strap and a screw or stud, and at the other end to the butter-crank by a leather strap having holes in it, whereby to make it adjustably attachable to the crank. The ends ot' the spring are attached to the straps by crimping, that being a ready and durable method of' attachment.
I am aware that buffers have been used on looms (commonly a piece ot' rawhide) singly and in combination with other parts; but these have various defects, which are remedied in my invention.
My improvement consists in the peculiar combination which renders the device readily applicable to any loom and retractible, so that -it can be thrown in and out of use promptly and easily while the loom is in operation.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a lathe-beam, a, and a picker-stick, c, with-the retractible crank e and springj', and means for adjustably connecting said spring and crank, all substantially as dcscribed.
. MICHAEL MURRAY.
