BENJAMIN L. KENT, OF COATESVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-CLOSETS.
To all whom t may concern g Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LUNDY KENT, of Ooatesville, in the county of Chester and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Earth-Closets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to thel letters and igures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representa-tion of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the dustpan.
This invention has relation to earth-closets; and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a removable earth-receptacle.; of devices to regulate the quantity of earth dropped at each movement of the li`d;,of a swinging-door to prevent the escape of dust when the lid is raised and the earth let fall into the box, from which it passes directly into the bucket below, after the lid is let down and of a receptacle :for holding air slaked lime, chloride of lime, or other powerful disinfectant or absorbent, a portion of which is discharged with the earth upon the eifete matter at each motion of the closet-lid, all as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A designates an earth-closet, containing the bucket B, and provided with a large-sized hinged lid, C, the sides of which inclose the earth-box. DV designates the earth-box, which is portable, so that it may be removed and filled, thus avoiding the dust which would arise from lling it in the room wherein the earth-closet is placed. The box D is secured in place by means of a sliding bolt, d, in the lid C. The bolt passes l through a staple, d1, projecting from the top of the earth-box. The rear end of the boxis inclined, as shown, and thus provides a recess, into which a cleat, d2, on the inside of the lid C, passes, and forms a support to saidbox. The back part ofthe earth-box being inclined, serves as a slide to direct the earth into the bucket B when the lid C is closed down. The earth-box is divided laterally into three compartments, a a a'. The middle compartment a is small, and is designed to contain chloride of lime or other powerful disinfectant or absorbent. The side compartments are used to hold earth or ashes. The rear ends of these compartments communicate with an inclined chamber, E, inclosed between thc rear end of the earthbox and a parallel wall, E'. The upper edge of said wall is separated from the top ofthe box by a narrow space, e, through which a quantity of earth and disinfecting material passes into the chamber E whenever ythe lid C is raised. A slide, F, adjusted by a thumb-screw, G, is applied to the wall E', and used in reg ulating the quantity of earth passing into the chamber E. The slide operates by diminishing or enlarging the capacity of the space e.
When the lid is closed, the contents of the chamber e pass into the bucket B through an opening, H, in .the box D, which opening is provided with a swinginggate, h, that opens when the lid falls and closes when the lid is raised. The object in closing the opening H is to prevent the dust escaping into the room.
I represents a sliding door, covering an opening through which the earth-box is filled.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The earth-box, having the disinfectantchamber a and one or more earth-receptacles a, in combination with the chamber E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The bolt d and cleat d2, in combination with the removable earth-box D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The adjustable slide F, in combination with the chambers E and a of an earth-box, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
l BENJAMIN LUNDY KENT.
