Description

A. s. C HALFANT. ADJUSTABLE HINGE.' APPLICATION FILED APR. 18- 19H- Patented. Feb. 5
hlllTlE q ALLENSMITH OHALFANT, OF SOMERSET, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Application filed April 18, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN SMITH CHAL- FANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerset, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable hinges.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a gate especially adapted for farm use whereby thesame may be positioned for permitting the passing of smaller animals such as sheep and pigs without operatively swinging the gate upon its hinges, and further permits the gate to swing above snow drifts or other obstacles.
A further object of the device is the provision of an inexpensive mounting means for gates whereby the latter may be readily elevated and automatically retained at the desired vertical adjustment, the same being easily released for returning to its normal lowered closed position.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views:
Figure l is a front elevation of the device with the gate slightly elevated, the latter being shown by dotted lines in its normal lowered position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through the hinge mechanism of the device partially broken away.
Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail sectional views taken upon lines III-III and IV-IV respectively of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail view partially in section of the adjustment retaining members, and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the supporting hinge screw detached.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, it will be understood that the usual form of gate 10 is adapted for hinged suspension vertically adjustable upon any ordinary form of post 11, the present structure being Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lfieb. 5, 1218.
Serial No. 162,961.
in the nature of hinge connections between the gate and post permitting the free swlnglng movement of the gate at different desirable vertical adjustments thereof.
The present form of adjustable hinge broadly consists of a socket member 12 attached to the post 11 for the cooperative reception ofa pintle member13 carried by the gate 10. The socket member 12 is arranged in the form of a pipe or tube seated upon the head 14 of a hinge screw 15 of the ordinary construction secured horizontally in the post 11 with the stud or lug 16 of the said head received within the lower end of the socket tube 12. A screw eye 17 is secured horizontally to the post 11 with the eye 18 thereof in axial alinement with the stud 16 while the socket tube 12 is journaled through the said eye 18. A'stop or set collar 19 is secured to the tube 12 beneath the eye- 18 in any desired manner as by means of a cotter pin 20, thereby preventing the socket 12 from vertically moving and permitting the rotation thereof.
The pintle member 13 is secured to the gate 10 adjacent the top thereof by means of a hinge strap 21 secured to the gate and surrounding the pintle 13 fixedly secured to the latter in any manner desired such as by means of the cotter pin 22, the strap 21 being illustrated as fixed to the gate 10 by means of bolts 23. It will be understood that the pintle 13 may consist of either a solid bar or a tube while the same is slidably arranged within the socket member 12 bein both vertically and rotarily shiftable therein. A lower hinge strap 24 is carried by the gate 10 freely surrounding the socket tube 12, it being understood that the gate 10 when lowered may be readily swung relatively of the post 11 in a hinged manner with the upper strap 21 seatedupon the top of the socket 12 whereby the said socket 12 may turn with the ate l0 revolving a partial rotation upon the screws 15 and 17. Upon elevating the gate 10, the weight of the latter slightly tilts the gate and the lower strap 24 impinging the sides of the encircling portion 25 of the said lower strap against the side of the socket 12, thereby retaining the gate 10 at its elevated adjustment for per- .mitting the smaller stock to pass therebe- A serviceable form of gate is arranged which may be readily formed of the usual gate structure by using the strap hinge mem bers 24 and 21 of the gate as well as the lower hinge screw 15 of the post it being only necessary to supply the eye screw 17 upon the post 11 and mount the socket tube in the said tubular member, and supporting members, one of the same being fixedly attached to said pintle and the other rerti rally shiftably j ournaled exteriorly of said tubular member.
2. A gate hinge comprising a tubular socket adapted to be supported in journaled relations upon a post, a vertically shiftable pintle adapted to be secured to a gate and journaled in said socket and an adjustn'ientretaining strap member adapted to be carried by a gate shiftably arranged upon said socket.
3. A gate hinge comprising upper and lower strap hinge members adapted to be carried by a gate an upper eye screw anda lower hinge screw adapted to be carried by a post, a journaled socket tube carried by the said screws upon which the said lower strap member is vertically adjustably positioned and a pintle attached to the said up per strap member and shittably arranged within the said socket.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
