GATE-HINGE.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,142, dated December, 1903.

Beit known that I, JAY D. PARKINSON, va citizen of the United States, residing at Laporte, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gate- Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges, being espe- ,cially directed to gate-hinges, and has for its objects to produce a devicevof this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, and one in which the friction will be reduced to a minimum.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel details of construct-ion and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, l indicates the terminal fence-post, which is situated at one side of the road or gateway and constitutes the hinge-post of the gate, and 3 is a gate comprising end post 4, upper and lower rails may all be of the usual or any desired form,
construction, and material, inasmuch as they wardly-extending .portions centrally perforated for the reception of the rod 7. The upper and lower hinge memberslO l1, which are carried by the post 1, "consist preferably of ordinary screw-eyebolts tapped horizontally into the post with their eye portions projecting laterally from the post in position to receive the rod 7. The upper member 14 is mounted upon'the rod beneath the hinge member 10, while the lower member 15 is situated between the hinge members 9 and 11. In this connection attention isdirected to the fact that the gate may be adj usted vertically upon the rod 7 by releasing the set-screws 13 and after having been brought to the properadjustment maybe fixed in such position by manipulating said screws to again engage the rod and that the roditself may be adjusted bodily in a vertical plane, carrying with it the gate 8, and be maintained in such adjusted position by the lower block 15, while the upper member 14 can at the same time be properly adjusted for engagement beneath the hinge member 10 to prevent escape of the lower end of the rod from the hinge member 11. Thus it will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that when the parts are properly'arranged relatively the entire Weight of the gate in a vertical plane will be sustainedl by the lower member 15 bearing uponthe lower hinge member l1 and that the only frictional contact of the parts will be between the member 15 and the hinge member 11, thus reducing such friction to a minimum, prolonging the life of the various elements-of the hinge mechanism, and insuring easy movement of the gate.
The pivoting-rod 7 is extended at its upper end at an angle to the rod to form a substantially horizontal arm 17, which extends rearward of the gate in parallel relation thereto and is provided at its outer end withv an eye 18, adapted for the attachment of suitable gate-operating ropes, (not shown,) which are extended to and operated from opposite sides of the gate in the well-known manner and which serve when manipulated to swingzthe arm in a horizontal plane, thus moving the gate, which is fixedlyassociated withthe rod, to an open or closed position, as will be readily understood.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a simple and efficient mechanism which is admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in View and one in which the surfaces of but two of the movable parts contact one with the other, thus reducing the friction to a minimum and insuring the gate moving with ease and freedom, and in attaining these ends it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details herein shown and described, inasmuch as minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a device of the class described, the combination with a hinge-post, of hinge mem bers attached thereto, a gate, hinge members attached thereto, a vertical pivoting-rod extending through the hinge members, means for fixing the hinge members of the gate to the rod, said means being operable to permit vertical relative adjustment of the gate and rod, a block adjustably connected with the rod beneath one pair of the hinge members, and a block adjustably connected with the rod between the other pair of hinge members.
