DOUBLE-DOOR-ACTUATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1921.
Application filed March 6, 1920. Serial No. 363,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLE P. OVERLIEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Black River Falls, in the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Door-Actuating Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I
My invention refers to semi-automatic controlling mechanism for companion swinging doors, its primary object being to provide a simple, effective and durable mecha-' nism of the above character which can be readily attached to garage doors or the like and which will act under spring or weight control to close thedoors tightly after an initial manual movement in one direction and to hold them securely open after an initial manual movement in the other direction, thus avoiding the tendency of the doors to swing open or close whereby some means would have to be employed to hold them in their different positions.
Specific objects of my invention are:
To provide means for adjusting the apparatus whereby it can be attached to doors of different dimensions.
To provide means for adjusting the mechanism whereby the doors are held open at predetermined angles with respect to the door opening. To provide means in connection with the apparatus whereby the spring or weight mechanism can be attached to either the ri ht or left hand door.
ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying illustrations and subsequently claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a plane sectional view through a door opening provided with hinged doors equipped with a controlling mechanism embodying the features of my invention, the doors being shown in their open position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the doors in their closed position.
Fig. 3 is'a detail cross section through one of the bracket members, thesection being indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

provided with doors 2, 3 which are connectvided with a series of apertures 6 for selective engagement with the down turned end of a rod 7, the same being in hinge connection with the aperture. The rod 7 is in telescopic union with a hollow rod 8 being held against telescopic movement by a set screw 9 with which the hollow rod 8 is provided.
The opposite end of the rod 8 has secured thereto a pintle head 10, which pintle head has a shank 10 that is hingedl mounted in an aperture'of a bracket11'. T e bracket 11 is secured to the trailer door 3 being positioned with relation to the door corresponding to the bracket 5 which is carried by the The bracket 11 is provided with two or more apertures 12 for a bolt 13 which bolt passes through a slot 14 that is formed in a stop-arm 15, the same being proyided with an upturned end, as best shown 1n Flg. 3, in engagement with the protrudin terminal of the rod 8 whereby movement 0 this rod upon its pivot is limited. The stoparm is thus rendered adjustable with relation to the end of the rod 8 so as to regulate the scope of the angular position that the door may assume when in a full open position. The bracket 11 is provided with a plurality of apertures 12 for the purpose of reversing the position of the stop-arm when it is desired to place this mechanism upon the opposite door from that shown, in which case the master door mechanism would also be reversed as to its position with the pair of doors.
vThe bracket 5 is provided with a series of apertures 6 for the purpose of adjusting the downturned end of the rod? at diflerent distances from the hinge point of the door whereby variation in the throw of the door is also effected.
The bracket 5 is provided with an inwardly extending arm 16 for the reception of one end of a spring 17 the opposite end of said spring being anchored to the door it beingunderstood, however, that this anchor may be located upon the ceiling of the building or in any other convenient position so as to effect the desired spring control whereby the master door will be closed by the spring when said door is swung initially inwardly to a predetermined point from the position shown in Fig. 1.
While I have shown-a spring for accomplishing these results obviously I may substitute the equivalent element a weight, in
which instance a cord or other runner would be attached'to the arm 16 and the same would be trained over suitable pulleys with the weight at its free end in such manner that gravity would function to ac complish the closing action.
From the foregoing description andby referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will be seen that should manual power be applied to the handle a: of .the master door in the direction as indicated by the arrow the door will be swung outwardly to approximately the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This action is effected in opposition to the spring.
When the m'asterdoor assumes the dotted line position as in Fig. 1 the composite rods 7 and 8 constituting a link will cause an outward pull upon the trailer door 3 where- 'by said door will swing upon its hinges to the position indicated in dotted lines in I Fig. 1.
In this position the link connecting the doors will assume a dead center position with relation to the hinge axis of the trailer door and the pintle head 10.
lVith the parts in this position the operator will now exert a slight manual force upon the door 3 inan outward direction so as to cause the pintle to pass the imaginary .dead center positionfand simultaneously If it should be desired to adjust the doors so that they will swing through approximately ninety degrees for example the rod 7 can be placed in the bracket aperture nearer the hinge point of the master door whereby the combined throw or outward swing of the door will be limited. This function of adjustment is desirable where a garage may have a second set of doors hav inga very narrow space between them and the first set in which case unless the doors inghingedv doors, brackets for the doors secured to the same near their hinges, a closing spring for one door, a link having a pivotal connection to the bracket of said door and also-to the bracket of the other, the link being of such length that the latter pivotal connection crosses the dead center line passing through the adjacent hinge and the other pivotal connection when the doors are opened or closed.
2. The combination of oppositely swinging hinged doors, brackets for the doors secured to the same side near their hinges, a closing spring for one door, a link having a pivotal connection to the brackets of said door and also to the bracket of the other, the link being of such length that the latter pivotal connection crosses the dead center line passing through the adjacent hinge and the other pivotal connection when the doors are opened or closed, and a stop carried by one of the door brackets engageable with the link for limiting outward swing of said doors. i
