To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jnnnonn F. TVALTOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sturgis, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair- Backs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in chair backs, and particularly to improved means for securing the depending controlling arm for hinged chair backs.

This invention relates to the structure appearing in Letters Patent No. 1,137,246, issued April 27, 1915,.and shows an improved and modified means for securing the arm in position on the back.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved attaching means for such an adjusting arm. Objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.

I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

A structure constituting a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illus-. trated in the accompanying drawing, form ing a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

Considering the numbered parts ofthe drawing, the chair back is made up of side bars 1, 1 and a bottom cross bar 2 and cross bars 3, 3 above the same. Secured to. the cross bars is a vertical arm 4 having 'a straight round shank. On the under side of the bottom bar 2 is secured 'a clip by suitable screws 6 said clip having a hole 7 therethrough With a lateral slot 8 at each side and having a folded over upper por-.

Lugs 11,11 are struck out on the sides of the arm 1 so that when the arm is inserted up through the clip 5 the lugs pass up through the slots 8, 8 and when the rod is turned a quarter turn the same is locked in position so that it can be neither raised nor lowered. Clip pieces 12, 12 are secured to the under side of the bars 3, 3 and contain the round holes 13, .13 through which the upper end of the arm 4: extends whereby said clip pieces serve as securing means for attaching the arm to the chair back. A round rod is preferred, but similar results can be attained by other forms. In the modified structure shown in Fig. V, the upper clip let is provided with an angular arm 15 which extends over the perforation and constitutes a stop for the arm 4, and the lower clip 5 merely comprises a flat plate provided with a hole and slots like the hole 7 and slots 8 of Fig. IV. In this modification a pin 16 is arranged through the rod to project at each end, the projecting ends performing the functions ofthe lugs 11, 11.

It will thus be seen that by providing sheet metal clips which can be secured in place by screws and projecting slightly at the back of the chair, a structure which can be very readily assembled and disassembled by hand alone is provided, so that the chair with this feature can be very readily taken apart and shipped in the knock down, the same as the chair of my said Letters Patent. This structure is available with light cross bars or slats. It can be modified to a considerable extent without departing from my invention, as pointed out in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i

1. The combination of an adjustable back, a detachable arm with a round straight shank part, clip members secured to the said back, having holes in line to receive the said arm, the bottom one of Which has a slotted hole and a portion folded over with a round hole registering with the bottom hole, a proj ection on said arm adapted to pass the slots to coact with the said clip to retain the arm in position, as specified.

In a chair, the combination With a hinged back, having side bars and cross bars, sheet metal clip pieces secured to the under side of said cross bars and projecting therefrom and containing perforations, the bottom of which contains a perforation with lateral notches, an arm with projections disposed in said perforations and adapted to engage the lower plate and be supported thereby, and a stop means for preventing the ppward movement of said bar.

3. In a chair, the combination with a hinged baclghaving side bars and cross bars, clip pieces secured to the under side of said cross bars and projecting therefrom and containing perforations, the bottom of which contains a perforation with lateral notches, and an arm with projections disposed in said perforations and adapted to engage the lower plate and be supported thereby.

4-. In a chair, the combination with a hinged back comprising side bars and cross bars; clip pieces secured to the erossbars and projecting therefrom and containing perforations, an arm disposed in said perforations, and projections on said arm coacting with one of the plates whereby the arm is supported longitudinally.
