Description

C. DANGELO.-
ARMY LEGGING. APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 1911.-
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
CQHBAD DAN ELO, OF NEW YORK, N-
ABMY-LEGGIN'G.
To all about it may concern Beit known that l, CQNRAD nANenLo, a citizen of the Republic of France, now residing atthe borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Army-Leggings, of which the following is the specification.
Heretofore so far as I am aware army leggings as customarily made have been manufactured of leather, canvas, duck, or similar materials, and made to fit or conform to the calf of the leg of the wearer, being secured in place by means of straps and buckles or lacing, or other similar devices. As will be apparent therefore, in ordinary army leggings it was necessary in almost every instance to make the leggings to order or measure to have them fit properly, as naturally arises from the difierent sizes and configurations of the calves of the legs of the wearers of the articles. The object of my present invention is to overcome this difficulty and to provide a legging which is made so as to be applied and to fit the calf of the leg of any person irrespective of the size and shape of the same.
In carrying out my invention the improved form of legging is made from khaki or woolens or any approved army cloth and cut into a strip, one end of which is adapted to fit the ankle of the wearer, while an intermediate or central portion is adapted to be wound around the calf of the leg of the wearer and the opposite or top end is provided at its extremity with a tab adapted to be tucked between the folds of the legging so as to secure the same in position.
1110 legging will be hereinafter more particularly described in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the configuration of the legging.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation showing the ap plication of the legging in use, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing the legging made in accordance with this invention preferably comprises a strip of material indicatcd at 10 and at one end, which for the purpose of description will be called the lower end, the strip of material is curved in plan in one direction as indicated at 11 and at this end an end piece 12 is employed and adapted to continue the general conformation of the strip at this end thereof. The extremity of the strip and the adjacent side Specification of Letters Patent.

of the end piece are suitably connected along a line indicated at 13.. This may be done by stitching or lacing or in any suitable manner and on both sides of this joint between the lower end of the strip proper and the end piece, the inner side of the strip of material is reinforced by a padding of leather or other similar material indicated at 14. This may be secured in position by lines of stitching 15 or otherwise. The purpose of employing this end piece is in order that depending upon the position in which the same is attached the lower end of the legging may be made to conform to different sized and shaped ankles, taking also into consideration. the height of the instep of the wearer.
At the opposite end the strip forming the legging is in plan curved in the opposite direction as indicated at 16 while the intermediate portion of the strip as indicated at 17 is substantially straight. At the upper or curved end of the strip the extremity thereof is provided with a tab 18 preferably extending at right angles thereto as plainly indicated in. Fig. 1 of the drawing.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that in plan the logging made in accordance with my invention is substantially made in an ogee curve with the lower end thereof curved in plan and in one direction, and the radius of the curve relatively small, while the upper end thereof is curved in plan in the opposite direction with the radius of the curve relatively large. and the central portion thereof is substantially straight.
In the application of this legging the lower end thereof is placed around the ankle as indicated in Fig. 2 with the reinforcing pad innermost and in the position as shown in this figure. The legging is then wound around the calf of the leg and is of length sufficient to reach when so wrapped, to a point appreciably below the knee. After being so wrapped the tab 18 at the upper end of the legging is tucked up between ad jacent folds thereof so as to secure the leg ging in position on the wearer.
I claim as my invention:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a legging comprising a strip of material having at its lower end a curved portion the center of which is adapted to lie at the back of the ankle with the lower extremity ex tending over the front of the ankle, a rela lltlll Mil) tively straight central portion adapted to be wound around the calf of the leg of the wearer, and an upper curved portion with an extension at an angle thereto at its extremity adapted to be tucked under the top fold of the legging.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a legging comprising a strip of cloth having a curved lower end adapted at its extremity to lie at the back of the ankle of the wearer, an end piece secured to the lower end of the Copies of this patent may be obtained tor five cents each. by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
the calf of the leg of the wearer, and a curved upper portion with a tab at right angles at the extremity thereof, the said tab being adapted to be tucked up under the top fold of the legging.
Signed by me this 7th day of July. 1917.
