ELLAY M. PICKARD, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
HAIR-CURLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application med .Tune 12, 191?. sez-iai No. 174,268.
To all l't0/wm t may concern." Y K Be it knoWn that I, ELLA M. PICKARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma Oity, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain neuT and useful Improvements in I-Iair- Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles, and more particularly to hair Vcurlers.
The object of the invention is to providea simply constructed cheap device of this character which will produce curls very similar to those formed by nature and Which Will not discommode or be in any Way uncomfortable to the user.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which Will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinationand arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:-
Figure l represents a side elevation of this improved curler shovvn applied,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the curler detached with parts broken out to show the interior construction of the member on which the hair is Wound, and
Fig. 3 is a similar vievv showing the article in the act of being applied.
In the embodiment illustrated, the curler constituting this invention comprises a hair receiving or Winding member l which is substantially cigar shaped, being cylindrical throughout the main body portion thereof and tapered toward its opposite ends. This member is preferably composed of a casing 2 of cloth, kid or any suitable pliable material and which may be of any desired size according to the size of the curl it is desired to form thereon. This casing 2 is filled with hair, cotton or any suitable filler 3 and se cured to its opposite ends are tivo clamps l and 5 which are preferably constructed of elastic straps secured intermediately of their ends to the ends of the member l` and are equipped with cooperating fastening elements 6 at their terminals to provide for the detachable connection of said ends. One of these fastening elements is disposed on one face of the strap at one end and the other on the other face at the opposite end to provide for the overlapping engagement of these ends when in operative position. These straps are designed to encircle the hair after it has been Wound on the member l to hold it in position until the proper curl has been formed therein.
-In the use of this device as shown in Fig. 3, the hair is separated into portions of any suitable size according to the size of the `curl to be formed. These so separated portions as shown at 7 are designed to be Wound around the member l, the upper strap 5 being first clamped around the hair and the end of said member as is shown clearly in Figs. l and 3. The hair is then Wound closely around the member 1 and the terminal thereof is folded over strap 4 and said strap is then clamped around said folded end and the end of the member l as is shown clearly in Fig. l and the device is then alloWed to remain in this position until the desired curi has been imparted to the hair Wound thereon. While one curl only is shown, it is to be understood that the remainder of the hair of the user is to be similarly divided and Wound on other curlers of corresponding construction.
It Will be understood that by forming the elastic straps 4 and 5 of ornamental material, that these curlers Will not present an objectionable appearance and that a child may Wear them Without being disfigured, and owing to the pliable nature of the members l, they are rendered extremely comfortable, which is not the case with those now in use. The elongated nature of these curlers prevents them from being uncomfortable When sleeping as they present no disagreeable enlargements such as are produced by the ordinary kid curlers.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and While I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim l. A hair curler comprising a pliable substantially cylindrical member having one end tapered, and flexible seeuringelementsV carried by the ends of Vsaid member and extended in planes at right angles thereto provided with detachable connections for securing the ends of, said elements together.
2. A hair eurler Comprising a pliable substantially cylindrical member having beveled ends, elastic straps secured intermediately of their ends to the ends of said member, and cooperating fastening elements carried by the ends of said straps. n*
3. A hair eurler comprising a pliable Cigary shaped member, elastic straps secured intermediately of their endsto the ends of said member and extending in planes at right angles thereto, and Coperating fastenobi'e of this patent may be obtained for ing elements carried by the ends of said straps, one of said 4eleirnents being arranged on one face of said strap and one on the other to provide for their overlapping engagement.
4;.. A hair eurler comprising a substan-v tially cylindrical member, elastic straps secured interme'cliately of their ends to the ends of said member, and ooperating Afastening elements carried by the ends of said straps. y p
In testimony whereof I aliX my signature in presence of twowyitnesses. y Y p n ELLA M. PICKARD. itnessesz Y MAUDE L. LIVER, C. E. DAILEY.
