APPLICATION FILED AUG-l8. I921.

UNITED STATES Q ENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. BECHTOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BAND (10MB.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Fl 14 1922 Application filed August 18, 1921. Serial No. 493,191.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM S. BECH- TOLD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Band Combs, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to band combs such as consist of a curved body portion having teeth extending therefrom whereby the comb may be inserted in the hair of the wearer. It has for its object to provide a comb of this type which shall be inexpensive and so constructed that a ribbon or other ornamental member or band may readily'be drawn through the body portion and secured thereto. The construction of the 1mproved comb is such, moreover, that the comb is not materially weakened, but is perfectly rugged as well as being attractive in appearance.
The nature of the invention,'however, will best be understood whendescribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved band comb with an ornamental r1bbon attached.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modification; and Fig. 4- is a section thereof taken on the line 1- l, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of a further modification; and Fig. 6 is a section thereof taken on the line 6-6, Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of a circularly formed band comb which may be of material such as cel luloid, tortoise shell or hardrubber and the like. From the body portion projects a plurality of comb teeth, as is well known in the art, the teeth servingto retain the comb in the hair of the wearer.
In accordance with the invention, the said body portion is so modified that it will be adapted to readily allow of an ornamental ribbon or the like being drawn therethrough and secured thereto. To this end, said body portion is provided with a longitudinal slit 11.. near its upper edge and substantially midway of its ends; and the narrow portion or band 12 thus formed, Figs. 1 to 4, is separated from the body portion to aflford an opening 13 through which a ribbon 14 may be drawn and tied to the portion 12. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the portion 12 is displaced upwardly or above the outer edge of the body portion; while, in the modification shown in Figs. 8 and l, the same is shown displaced outwardly from the face thereof.
A further modification, shown in Figs. and 6, consists in providing two slits 15 and 16 and bending outwardly the narrow strip 17 formed thereby. This provides an openinglS suitable for drawing a ribbon therethrough, and the strip 17 will serve as means to which said ribbon may be secured.
In this manner, the strength of the comb is not materially reduced and a simple, inexpensive and satisfactory band comb is afforded which is so constructed, moreover, that an ornamental ribbon or the like may conveniently be attached thereto and securely retained thereby I claim A one-piece curved band comb, comsprising a body portion having teeth extending therefrom, said body portion being slit over a portion of its length near its upper edge and substantially midway of its ends and the slit portion separated from the remainder to afford an opening through which a ribbon or the like may be drawn and secured to the body portion.
Signed at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, this 15th day of August A. D. 1921.
WILLIAM S. BECHTOLD.
