Description

A. W. PETERSOHN.
SMOKING PIPE-r APPLICATION FILED OCT-25, 1916.
Patented Jan. 15, 19180 AUGUST W. IETERSOHN, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
SMOKING-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. id, 11918.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUoUs'r W. Parnasonn. a citizen of the United States residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed,
An object of the invention is to provide a tobacco pipe which may be easily and quickly cleaned and one which will prevent the tar 0r nicotin from entering into the bore of the pipe in consequence of the use of the same.
With the above object in view the chamber in the bowl of the pipe is provided at its walls with notches which are adapted to receive humps provided upon a spring member, the said spring member in turn being housed beneath a perforated plate which is provided at its peripheral flange with openings through which the said humps may pass and engage into the notches.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a pipe howl showing the improvements applied Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a plate used in the pipe.
Fig. 3 is aplan view of the same.
Fig. t is an edge view of a ring used in the pipe.
Fig. is a plan view of said ring.
Fig. (3 is a perspective view of a plugused in the pipe.
The pipe bowl 1 may be of any design or pattern and the said bowl is provided with a chamber 2 in the usual manner and a bore ll which communicates with the lower end of the chamber The bore extends completely through the stem of the pipe bowl and at its forward end is closed by a screw plug r. \Vhen the plug 4 is removed the bore 3 is open from end to end and may be readily cleaned. The chamber -'2 is provided at its walls with an annular groove 5 and a plate (3 is insertible in the said socket. The plate (3 is perforated as at 7 at its intermediate portion and the said plate is provided with a peripheral flange 8 having openings .9. A split ring 10 is adapted to be inserted 'ivithin the flange S and the said ring is provided at intervals with outstanding humps 11 which are adapted to pass through the openings 9 and enter the notches 5 whereby the plate (5 is held in position in the lower portion of the chamber 2 of the pipe bowl.
When the tobacco is placed in the bowl, it rests upon the plate 6 at the lower portion of the socket and consequently when the pipe is being smoked the smoke passes in a downward direction through the openings 7 and thence along the bore 3 to a mouth piece. Consequently the said plate (5 serves as a screen and tends to revent the juices from the tobacco from lot ging in the lower portion of the chamber 2.
When it is desired to clean the pipe a sharp instrument is inserted through one of the perforations 7 and the plate 6 is pulled in an upward direction whereby the humps 11 are withdrawn from the groove 5 and the plate 6 is removed from the chamber 2 of the bowl. A new or clean plate is then suhstituted ior the one removed.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a tobacco pipe of simple and durable structure is provided. and that the same is further provided with means for keeping the same in a clean and wholesome condition.
Having described the invention what I claim is:
A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl having a chamber provided with a groove located in the lower portion of its wall. a perforated plate having an annular flange fitting in the chamber and provided with openings which register with the groove and a detachable resilientring having humps which pass through the openings in the flange of the plate and enter the groove and hold the plate in the bowl below the upper edge thereof.
