A ITOBNEYS ITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE;
ELMER E. TAYLOR; OF ST. LOUIS, 1ttISSOURI.
SMOKING-PIPE CLEAN ER AND AGIIAJIOR.
'Applicationfiled February 24, 1916. ,Ser-ial No. 80,161.
My invention relates particularly to an attachment for smoking pipes whereby to loosen the tobacco to cause the pipe to draw freely, and to provide for cleaning the interior of the bowl at the bottom and sides as well as the forward end of the stem when necessary.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific'descripti'on following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of thislspecification in which similar reference characters indicate eorrespondingparts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a'longitudinal vertical section of a smoking pipe embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 hntshowing the movable member carrying the bowl cleaner in a'lowered position; Fig.
l is a perspective view of the cleaning and agitating device.
In carrying out my invention, a bowl 10 of any suitable design has a stem 11 thereon. .\t the bottom of the bowl a closure 12 provided therefor which has a rear extension hinged as at 13 to the stem at the under side of the latter. 'lheupper surface of the closure 12 is preferably dished to conform to the curvature of the bowl 10 at the bottom, and at the rear portion said upper surface has a longitudinal groove 14 which, together with a corresponding groove 15 extending from the bowl to the smoke passage it forms a passage complementary to the said smoke passage. Suitable fastening means are provided at the forward end of the closure there being shown a spring latch 17 on said closure and a catch stud 18 on the bowl.
spindle 19 extends vertically through the closure 12 and is adapted to turn therein. )n the lower end of the spindle, at the under side of the closure 12, any suitable head or like formation is provided for turning the same. At the upper side of the closure 12, said spindle has diverging curved agitator Specification of L'etterslatent.
Patented 001335-1916.
members, 21, 22, that emanate from 'a head on the spindle. Preferably, some of the agitator elements 21 are in the form of plain rods while the remaining elements 22 are crimped.
In the described construction it will be seen that the spindle 19 may be turned so that the members, 21,22, will loosen the tobacco. The turning of said members may also be made to dislodge particles from the walls and bottom and said particles may then be readily knocked ordumped from the bowl without disturbing the closure 12. By loosening the latch 17 andpermitting the closure 12 to drop to the position shown in Fig. 3, the pipe may be readily and thoronghly cleaned,
'entered in the l'iowla-vhen the closure 12 is brought to the raised position.
- 'Ilaving thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent 2 ,l.'.\ smoking pipe-including a bowl, a stem thereon, a. drop piece hinged at its rear end to the stem, co-acting fastener. elements on the forward end of said drop piece and on the bowl, the said dro fpie'ce forming a closure tor the bowl at the bottom and havin; a passage leading to said bowl and comph-nu-ntarwto the smoke passage of the stem, and a revolulile cleaner and agitator carried by and extending through the said drop piece and being formed with a head at the under side of said drop piece to turn said cleaner and agitator.
A. smoking pipe including a li fv'xi, a stem thereon, a closure for the lower end of the bowl, said closure having a rigid extension hinged to the stem, coaeting tastener elements on the front end of said closure and on the bowl, :1 revoluble spindle extending through the said closure and provided with nn-ans on the lower end thereof to turn the spindle, and a plurality of upwardly projecting curved diverging members on the upper end of said spindle in position to move over the surface of the bowl at the bottom and sides.
3 A smoking pipe including a bowl, a stem thereon, a closure for the lower end of the bowl, said closure having a rigid ex tension hinged to the stem, coacting fastener elements on the front end of said closure and on the bowl, a revoluble spindle extending through the said closure and provided with means on the lower end thereof to turn the spindle, and upwardly projecting curved diverging members: on the upper end of said spindle in position to move over the surface 10 of the bowl at the bottom and sides as the spindle is turned, certain of said members being crimped.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
