ELEc'rnIo Locxmennvicn.
To all whom it may concern.' p
Be it knownthat I FLOYD vJonson C oLLAE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, inthe county of Alameda and Stute. ofv California,.have invented new and useful Im rovements' in Electric Locking Devices, 4o which the following is a spec1fi cation.
My invention elates to certain newand useful improvem nts 'in 4an electric locking device, and it has for one of its'hprimary objects to provide a permutation-lock-con trolled switch especial y adapted for insertion in the ignition system of internal combustion engines so that the circuit can only be completed by aparticular and predeter` mined arrangementof parts which arrangement is not apparent to the observer. l T he invention consistsin a novel disposition of operative parts .and in details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings in Whichy l.
Figure 1 is a topo bination disk und turning knob. l U
Fig. 2 is a section through 21-2 of Fig;`1. 4Fi 3ds a bottomend view of theknob iig. is a detail of lthe fiat pressure spring. 1
Fig. 5 is a bottom view ofthe dial and change pin.
Fig; 6 is a horizontal section through 6-6,
gig. 7 is a section through 77,.Figl. 2. As herein illustrated, my invention is designed to bevespecially applied to lock then ignition current of automobiles, so that only t e owner or the onein. possession of the combination can-start 'or operate 4the car or the connected mechanism.
In the drawings,- Arepresents the spark plugs or other` mechanismsto he controlled;
2 is a generator and 3 is a storage battery in the circuit` ndaptedfto supply `an electric cur-` rentl when the .generator is not inoperation. The circuitis completed .through the contacts4 4 and 5, andfrthe intermediate mechanism, which inthe. present construction, I have shown as follows: V6 and Taredisks or movable partsV o'ji non-conductingmate rial, superposed andeach having pins 8 of conducting .material passing through them at points which` enable themxtoregister and thus complete a circuit. These .disks or movable members may` be made ofliber or lan viewY of the com-- Specicatlion'of iLettere Patent. .Patented Jan.v 15 1918.
Application filed July 1, 1918. SerialNo.107L,125. l i y of suitable non-conducting materialand such may be provided with. pinsror conducting sections 8 which are so disposed that when the disks have been 'moved so that the conducting pins or sections yare'in alinement and' contact, the circuit-will beclosed and when moved out of alinement `the circuit Will be y opened. For convenience of description I have used that :form in :which the movable members are non-conductors but it should be understood that any equivalent device forl producing this result may be substituted Without departing from my invention. When the members have been turned vto the registering position as shovvn in Fig. 2, such position is determined-by dials a and o' show.v -ingv letters, figures, -or1 characters, and means by which they may be brought into a` certain relation which indicates that the conductors are in line, yand' the circuit-fclosed'. In the present construction the dial Z2 is ixed upon a cylindrical; housing I9, within which a cylinder` 10 is located. Through the center 'of the cylinderV 10, the spindle 11 ex tends, and this spindle'is turnable by means of a knob 412 'on its 'outer end, andthe diale turns with the spindle.
The disks 6 and 7 a'relocated below the cylinder 10 and are shown supported upon a base 13, through whichpasses a in 14 that enters the lower endl of the spin le 11, the
The disk 7 has a semi-circular made in 'its surface and extendin about ,half
way around. The upper' disk' 64 asaypin 15" 'which projects into the groove 7 aiidmay' a purpose, to behei'e-v be turned therein for after described. V
The lower end ofthe spindle 1,1 carries a pin 16 which projects eccentrict'o the 'center of rotation and which .maybe de ressed to4 enter a hole 17 whereby the two' disks'and 7 may be rotatedl in unison, when the knobA 12 and spindle are turned.`
The cylinder lhasa cylindrical chamber exterior tothe spindle 1'1 and a spiral spring i 18 is seated in this chamber, itsupperend pressing against the dial a,'act`s` toraise said dial andthe spindle 11,"and to withdraw thepin 16 from-the hole17, sothat no laction takes place if the knob 'andlspindle 'are To operatethe mechanism, the knob 12 is pushed down,' compressing the spring ,18'a'nd causing the pinl 16 inthe lower end ofthe spindle 11 to ride upon the'disk- 7 'untilfit registers with the hole 17, Ainto which it will then fall, and the further rotation of the spindle, will also rotate the disk 7 until the pin projects through the disk 6 into the slot 7 1n which it travels until vit contacts with the end of the slot, and the twoV disks will then move together until the dials a and b show the correlation of the'desired figures 5' is av sprin Patent ison the dials, which`wi1l indicate that an operative contact has been made from 4 with the contact on the disk 6. B then reversing the movement of the spin le, the in 15 will be carried to the op osite endof t e slot 7l and will then turn t is member until itsl conductor is in line and in contact with the opposed sections 8 when thecircuit will be complete from 4 to 5 and an electric current may pass to lenergize the sparking, or other mechanism controlled by the described devices.
Rotation of the spindle will disarrange the movable members and open the circuit. 19 is a flat-spring so' fixed with relation to the member 6 and 7 that one leaf 20 will press against the edge of one member and the other leaf 21 will press against the edge'- vof the other member and the two are thus prevented from being accidentall turned.
The combination maybe c anged by means of a pin 22 which maybe moved to any of the holes 23 of the dial a to register with a corresponding character on the dial. which is here shown fixed at 5 and exten s across and beneath the lpin 14, so that when the spindle and lpin are depressed, to engage with and actuate the parts 6 and 7, the opposite end of the spring will also be depressed. This end is connected with the conducting section 8 which being slidable, will b`e withdrawn, soV that when the spindlel is depressed, the circuitv will .be opened and no current can pass to give any indication if the parts are in position', while the movable parts are being operated.
I t will be manifest that various changes ma be made by those familiar with the art,
wit out de arting from my invention.
Having t us described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by- Letters arts,
