IGNITION CUT-OUT.
Application filed December 10, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l', ARTHUR MAYER, aresident of New York city, county and State or New York, and a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition Cut-Outs, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in locking means for the ignition of internal combustion motors, particularly of the class used to operate motor vehicles. To carry my invention into practice, l break the igni 'tion circuit at the distributor or device to electrically connect the ignition plugs at the proper time relative to the operation of the pistons. accomplish this result, I employ a special form of distributor arranged so that the circuit for the plugs can be broken and maintained broken until the device is reset, special means vbeing provided to lock the device in either oit or on positionu A 1 will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features'of which I will pointout in the'appended claims, reference being \had to the accompanying drawing wherein-:

Ink the drawing I have illustrated my invention as incorporated in a well known type of distributor consisting of a carrier made up oia casing 6 which carries a timer or rotating arm 7 carrying a contact 8 in circuit with a metal strip 9 having in contact therewith a pin 10 which in turn has connected thereto a high tension lead, indicated by 11, the low tension cir-Y cuit and breaker being omitted. The pin 10 is carried by a removable capV or cover Y12 which also carries conductors 13,14, 15
and 16, each of which is connected to its respective spark' 'plug (not shown), the distributor herein illustrated being for a four Serial No. 521,302.
cylinder motor. The cap 12 is removably connected to the casing 6 by means of a non-yieldable clip 16a and a yieldable latch 17. The casing 12 is provided with an annular iiange 18having cut away portions 18a and 19 and a recess 20. When the cap l 12 is in position upon the casing 6, the` clip 16a will overlap the flange 18, while latch 17 will engage recess 20'. To remove the cap, latch 17 will be pulled out of recess 20 and the cap revolvedto the right to cause the cut away portions 18a and 19 to disk 21 is rotatably held in p ace, withf in cap 12, by a ring 24 screwed into the cap. The disk 21 carries conductors 25, 26, 27 and 28, each being yieldably mounted in a casing 29 and forced outwardly or upwardly by a spring 31 to cause same to contact with the conductors 13, 14, 15 and 16.` During the rotation of arm 7, the contact 8 will im-pinge upon the conductors 25, 26, 27 and 28; hence, the circuit for each plug will be completed for the reason that said contacts will rest against conductors 13, 14, 15 and 16. 'To break the ignition circuit, gthe disk 21 will be rotated l (in this instance) in the direction of the arrow 31 until the conductors 25, 26, 27
and 28 are moved away from their respective conductors 13, 14, 15 and 16far enough to prevent aspark from jumping from the contacts 1'3 to 16 to the contacts 25 to 28 when disk 21 is in oil' position, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig 3.
To rotate disk 21, worm 23 will be rotated, and for this purpose I mount Worm 23 upon a shaft 32, one end 33 of which is journaled in cap 12, the other end 34 being connected to the cylinder 35 .of a pin-cylinder lock mechanism, the casing 36 for which is secured in position in cover 12l by a, pin 37. The outer end of the cylhnder 34 of the lock carries a hand-wheel 38 by means of which the cylinder 35, shaft 32 and lworm 23 are rotated, when cylinder 35'is unlocked. The cylinder 35 will be locked to its casing by pins (not shown) in the usual manner, said cylinder 35 being released from casing 36 by a key inserted into the keyhole 39. The disk 21 will be locked in both the on and off position. To move the disk 21 from .on to ofi", or vice versa, the cylinder 35 will beA released from its casing 36 by the key provided for the purpose. When disk 21 is moved to off position, the cover 12 will be locked against rotation; hence, cannot be removed from the distributor casing 6. To accomplish this,\I rovide the ring 24 with a pin 40 operate by a cam slot 41 in the disk 21 (see Fig. 4), arranged to engage a recess 42 in casing 6. When disk 24 is rotated, the pin 40 willl be moved into the recess 42; hence, the cap or casing 12 cannot be rotated even though latch 17 is moved out of recess 20 (see dotted lines F ig. 4). When disk 21 is moved to off position, the casing or cap 12 will be locked so that it cannot be moved. Whendisk 21 is in off position, the worm 23 will.i be locked hence,|disk 21 cannot be movedto onpositioneven though the cap or casing is removed after cutting the flange l18a away so that clip 16EL can be 'slipped oi iange 18a. When disk 21 is moved to off position, the circuit for the plugs will be broren; hence, the motor cannot be operate A further feature of the improvement resides in providing cap 12 with a supplemental contact 43 (Fig. 2) which by means of `a wire 44 can be connected to a gear-shiftlever emrgency brake, clutch pedal, brake pedal 0r starter switch. Thel contact 43 will be positioned so that when the disk 21 is in off position, a conductor carried by disk 21 will contact therewith, in this instance, contact 27. Should an attempt be made to start the motor, the person doing same would receive a shock as soon as contact 8 came into contact with contact 43.
As conductors 13 to 16 are larger in diameter than conductors 25 to 28, it is possible to alter the firing point of a motor by shifting disk 21 to the right or left across the face of conductors 13 to 16 whereby the contacting of contact 8 with the casings for the conductors 25 to 28 will either be advanced or retarded. By shifting disk 21 to the right or left, the sparking point of a motor can be advanced or retarded within the limits of the face of the conductors 13 to 16.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a distributor for ignition systems, a casing, a cap carried thereby normally removable therefrom, conductors for high tension current carried thereby, a rotary timer within the casing arranged to contact with said conductors, a circuit breaker within the distributor arranged te break the circuit between said timer and said conductors, means operable exteriorly of the distributor to operate the circuit breaker, means to lock the cap against removal when the circuit breaker is moved to off position, and means to lock the circuit breaker against movement.
2. In a distributor for ignition systems, a casing, a cap carried thereby normally removable therefrom, conductors for high tension current carried thereby, a rotary timer within the casing arranged to Contact with said conductors, a circuit breaker within the distributor arranged to break the circuit between said timer and said conductors, means operable eXteriorly of the distributor to operate the` circuit breaker, means to lock the cap against removal when the circuit breaker is moved to of position, means to lock the circuit breaker against. movement, and a supplemental conductor for high tensionl current carried by the cap arranged to be connected in circuit with the timer, when the circuit breaker is moved to off position.
3. In a distributor for ignition systems, a casing, a cap carried thereby normally removable therefrom, a rotatable circuit breaker within the cap, conductors for high tension current .carried by the cap, a rotatable diskI within the cap, conductors carried by the disk normally in contact with the conductors carried by the cap, a rotary timer within the distributor arranged to Contact with the conductors carried by the disk, teeth carried by the circuit breaker, a gear carried by the casing to rotate the circuit breaker, means to operate 'the gear exteriorly of the distributor to move the circuit breaker to off position, means operable by the circuit breaker to lock the cap againstA removal when the circuit breaker is move to olf position, and means to lock the circuit breaker operating gear against movement.
4. In a distributor for ignition systems, a casing, a cap carried thereby normally removable therefrom, a rotatable circuit breaker within the cap, conductors for high tension current carried by the cap, a rotatable disk within the cap, conductors carried by the disk normally in contact with the conductors carried by the cap, a rotary timer withinv the distributor arranged to contact. with the conductors carried by the disk, teeth carried by the circuit breaker, a gear carried by the casing to rotate the circuit breaker, means to operate the gear exteriorly of the distributor to move the circuit breaker to off position, means operable by the circuit breaker to lock the cap against removal when the circuit breaker is moved to off posi tion, means to lock the circuit breaker open. ating gear against movement, and a supplemental conductor carried byy thecap arranged to contact with one of the conductors carried by the circuit breaker, when the circuit breaker is moved to o position.-

In combination with a distributor for ignition systems having high tension c'onductors, a circuit breaker Within thedis- 10 tributor, means to break the highl tension circuit controlled by the distributor at will, and means to ground the high tension circuit when the circuit, through the conductors of the" distributor, is broken.
