Specification of Letters .Patent Application il'ed March 24, wie. Serial Eile. 2284,78?.
To all yw zo m it may concern Be it kiioivn that I, EDWARD T. CUn'ri'ss, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of Californie., have invented new and useful improvements rirners, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to tiniers and consists of the novel features herein' shown, described and claimed.
Figure l is a diametrical sectional detail on the irregular line 1-1 et Fig. 2.
Fig 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the .line 2-2 01": Fig. 1.
F ig. 3 is a diagrammatic view for tracing the circuit.
Fig. 4 is e fragmentary detail of the make and break lever and mounted as seen looking in the ydirection indicated by the erroiv 4 in Fig. 2. Y
The cain shaft 1 extends through s bearing 2 in the engine case 3, and :in annuler bearing flange 4 extends outwardly from the face oi the case 3. The timer esse 5 lies an annular rim 6 itting rotatably upon the lenge et, un arin 7 extends from the case 5 end the mechanism for advancing end ref taiding the spark is to be connected to this zirin. An annular insulating block 8 is placed ngziinst'the inner fece of the flat Wall 9 of the cese 5 and secured in place by screi'vs 10, said block being,r concentric to tlie cam' shalt 1, and the chamber 11 of the case being eccentric to the block. The contact plates 12, 13, 14. and l5 are seeiired to the inner" face oi the bloclc'l by screws 16,thei'e being tivo screws in each plate. The plates 12, 13, 14 and 15 are Separated by tangentiiil gaps 17, so that' the brush bearing against the plates ivillpess gradually from one pla-te to the next across the gap.
The outer binding posts 18, 19, 2O and 21 are connected through the annular ivall 22 of the case 5 all at one side and as near together as niziy be. A' Wire 23 connects one of the screws 16 of the plate 12 to the binding post 18, e wire 2e connects the plate 13 to the post 19, afwire 25 connects the plate 14' to the post20, end a. ivirc 26 con-` nects the plate 15 to the post 21, said Wires being assembled in the chamber 11 at the large side or the chamber relative to the block 8.
AThe chamber 27 :tornied in the case 5 iinmedi"A tely in front el? the flange l is conccn tric cern shalt l, n ,delige 28 is `'from the outer edge of the bloei;
tile coil spring ell connects the live end formed from the partition 29 -which senin rates the chamber 1l from the chamber-2'? and. extends upon an incline toiverd engine case 3 ler pocket 29. fi liiib 30 is lined upon end or0 the earn shaft 1 against the enter off the bearing 2, e peripheral O'rooved disk 3l extends from the hub 30 outliverdlv as ffii' as the pociret 29, e. bloeit of insulti)- tion 32 is fixed upon the hub 30 enainst outer iuce of the disk Si., zi tube is lined in the block 32, the inner end of the 'tube ben ing closed by tlie block and the outer end being open, a carbon brush 34 is slidirigly mounted in tlie tube against the spring 3o in the bottoni of the tube, and the tension or the `spring is exerted to Dress the brush outwardly against the plates 12 13 15 and 15. l 7 a M The block is secured to the disl- 81 bv screws 36.` A. contacting plate 3?' enter l]l freni4 the tube and rests against the outer fece of the blocl 32. fi slot 38 is termed f The LP l. ineke ind breal-r lever .is loosely moinited in the slot 38 and held pivot-ally in 'place by n Screw fil). The screw i0 is abproxi mately at the center of vthe lever A. paid il oic insulation is lined 'to the handle end of the lever 39 to bear 'against the internal periphery 43 of the partition t retrac- .4l-5 of the lever to the screw 16 tapped into the, block 32, the tension et the spring beine exerted to throw the handle end eiitiiferdlij). so that the pad /11 will beer figc' ""ie ii.3 tei-nal periphery e3. A contacti point il formed upon the extreme live end e5, said Contact point being *forni-ed ol' suita'ile hard material, Isuch as tungsten. A. post ifi eX- tends from the disk 31, a screw 19 is 'lined through the post, and e VContact poli till is formed upon the point of the screw engage the contact point el', seid poiii i being formed of suitable herd material, such as platinum or tungsten. Breaks 51., 5 f, and are formed in 'the internal geiipherv 43, sind breaks being evenly spaced apart and of even lengths, and each ci? seid breaks having inclined entrances and llvhen the cani shaft 1 is rotating the nad. i1 is bearing against 'the internel periph ery C3 and the contact "ed inw from the contact 50 to br circuit, and i en of the breit-lis and outwardly to forni :in annuthe spring 44 will throw the pad 4l into the break and snap the contact L17 against the contact 50 to close the circuit and make a. spark. YIhre spark may ,be advanced or retarded 1n the usual way through the arm '4'.
The operation of vthe lever 39 makes and breaks the circuit indepexulently oi' the po sitien of the brush Bil upon the plates l2, 13., le and i5, consequently there will be no spark or make and and the plates. rl`he plates 12, 13, 14 and 155 simply serve. as selecting means for takhe current through. the desired oneoif' till, 24', 25 and 2G.
i wires 5T, Di, 59 and 60 connect the binding posts 18, i9, 2l) and 2l to the several spark plugs, Ysaid wires or lines running` through the usual vibrator, coil box and source olt energy, such as a magneto or aI battery. The Contact 5l) is grounded through the screw it?? the post 48, the plate 3l, and the cam sha it l7 and the spark plugs are grounded on the engine frame thus completing; the circuits.
Ydhen the brush Baie is passing; from one plate l', lit, lil and l5 to the othenthe circuit is broken and there is no tendency i'or sparking` or arcing;^ between the brush` and the plates. The circuits are controlled -by a positive make and break between the points 4i" and 50, and there is no rubbing contact between these points. rlhe chamber ll being eccentric to the chamber 27' and eccentric' to the cam shaft l makes it pos sible to assemble the wires 23, 24, 25 and 2G in the chamber il with the wires all lead iup; to one posts 18, i9,
2i) and 2l vat one side of the timer and outside of the timer so as to get' away from the 'fan belt and s0 as to avoid the n fesaity oi' i'listributing the lead wires 57, .35i and il() from radial points around the timer casinxgg.
"the oil which passes through the hearing` ifi around the cam-sha t l will be collected in the chamber 2.7 and will be deiected by the disk 5l to prevent the oil from passingn to the er mechanism, and any oil that is thrown outwardly by the disk 3l. against the iinv` yrnal. 'face oi the rim t5 will be coliceted in the pocket 29 and discharged downwardiy and. may drain from the chamccr 2T through opening YVarious changes may be made without break between the brush Y Ielectrically connecting' the brush. and means for connecting4 the annuside and to assemble the binding` mecano parting from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
