To all whom it may concern:
Improvements in Theft-Prevention Systems,
" of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates in general to an ignition system of the type usually employed in firing the charges in an internal combustion engine and the invention specifically relates to a thief retarding mechanism for protecting such ignition systems from attempts to cause the same to function in burglarious efforts to run the vehicle after the device has been set with the ignition system in an inoperative condition.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple, neat, compact unit a completely assembled article of manufacture, which will contain the vital elements of an ignition system and which unit can be left locked in some preset position with the circuit either opened or closed and which will tend to defeat any burglarious attempt to change the status of the device when so set.
Another object of the invention is to provide in a construction of the type outlined, a simple means for effecting a change in the timing of the spark control from the exterior of the protecting casing and without effecting the burglar resisting features of the disclosure. I
Still another object of the invention is to provide a casing for protecting the vital parts of the ignition system and for enclosing the same in such manner that ready access is provided for replacement and repairs and at the same time feature the use of a minimum amount of the expensive burglar proof metal.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention. will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth .in the following particular description .of
one form of mechanism embodying my in; vention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the following description and in the claims, parts will be identified by specific names for convenience of expression but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit. A
In the drawings there is shown an upstanding, broad base support 10 into one side of which extends a driving shaft 11 suitably connected in driving relation to a timing shaft 12 projecting upwardly from the support. The top of the support is made flatto provide a bearing surface 13 upon which is mounteda mechanism containing casing 14. The casing'14 includes an open top cylindrical part 15 and a laterally projecting extension 16. The cylindrical portion 15 is designed to receive a unit hereinafter identified as a distributor and which includes a breaker casting l7 and distribution casting 18. The casting 17 and 18 coact to house the distributor mechanism usually found in devices of this character. The upper portion of the casing 18 is exposed to permit the extension therefrom of spark'plug'supplying leads 20. By this construction it is seen that the conductors are exposed and thus readily accessible. The casting 18 is provided with a shoulder 21 which shoulder is engaged by a retaining ring 22 encircling the shoulder. The ring is provided with a depending flange 23 which fits into a groove 24: formed on the upper side of the cylindrical portion 15.
The side of the ring 22 which is designed to extend over the projection 16 is enlarged laterally to provide an extension 25 which contains a lock 26 and is designed to fit into' a circular groove 27 formed in the upper side of the extension 16: This interfitting of the extension 25 in the groove 27 insures the proper locating of the ring in position to insure the functioning of the lock. The lock is controlled by the rotation of a key which actuates a locking bolt 29. The bolt when in operative position extends through an opening in the flange 23 and into a' groove 30 formed in the cylindrical portion 15 so as to lock the retaining ring in position. This key also controls an extension from the bolt which thus constitutes the movable element 31 of a spring contact circuit closer 32 herein after more fully described.
An induction coil 33 is hung from the extension 16 and is secured thereto preferably in some manner that will defeat attempts to remove the same.
The casing 14 is provided on the side 0pposite the extension 16 with another exten sion 34 which provides a convenient means for rotating the casing 14' as a whole about the shaft 12 and in this way control the timing of the spark discharged. By means of a connecting rod indicated" at 35 the spark control may be manipulated from a remote station, such as the steering wheel of the vehicle when the device disclosed is mounted on an automotive vehicle. Shifting the easing 14 over a limited angle changes the relation of the shaft 12 to the spark plug terminals Within the casting 17. It will beunderstood that the casing 14, ring 22 and casting 18 are made of some burglar proof material and otherwise are constructed in accordance with approved burglar safe practices.
Referring to the diagrammatic showing in Figure 2 there is disclosed at 36 a storage battery or other source of electric energy, grounded on one side as indicated at 37 and connected at the opposite side through a conductor 38'with one of the primary termi- .nals39 of the coil 33. There may be included in the conductor 38 a manually controlled switch 40 which may be the usual ignition switch found on the instrument board of automotive vehicles. The other terminal 41 of the coil leads within the extension 16 by means of a conductor 42 to one of the spring contacts 43 of the circuit closer 32.
A spring extension '44 from the contact 32 bears on a plate 45 formed in the side of the casing 17 to ground one end of the cir cuit which includes the primary windings of the coil 33. v I
In operation and with the parts positioned as indicated in the drawings the device functions as is usual with ignition systemsexcept that inthe-case of the device herein disclosed it is necessary that the lock controlled member 31 be in the position closing the circuit through the coil, as shown in Figure 1. By means of the proper key this circuit may be locked either in opened or closed position.
Should it be desired to demount the distributor casing, the lock is turned in such position as will release the engagement ofthe bolt 29 in the slot of the casing and the retaining ring can then be lifted clear of its enga ement with the casing. The casting 18 can is en be removed from the casting 17 and by disconnecting the shaft 12 from the mechanism in the casting 17 the latter can be removed from the casing 14. By means of a device of the type disclosed it is understood that the usual manual control is provided by means of the instrument board switch indicated at 40 and the ignition will function as usual provided both the switches 40 and 32=are closed.
The operator when leaving the vehicle uses the key 28,- which preferably is the same key that controls the ignition switch 40, to lock the parts in position and at the same time unlock the switch 32 and thus prevent any one from closing this housed and protected switch 32 unless he be provided with the proper control key. In thus protecting the parts of the circuit even when in open position which parts controls the primary windings of the coil, the entire electrical system is protected and when the device is mounted on a vehicle it is impossible to supply the spark plugs of the engine by the use of the usual ignition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: a
1. In an ignition system, the combination of a support, a burglar proof casing adjustably mounted thereon and operatively connected to control the timing of the spark discharge, distributor mechanism housed within and protected by the casing and means for locking the mechanism in the casing while permitting the adjusting movement of the locked casing.
2. In an ignition system, the-combination of a support, a casing mounted thereon for a limited rotary movement, a distributor positioned in the casing and controlled by the rotary movement of the casing, a timing shaft journalled in the support and extending into the distributor, an induction coil and a circuit closer carried by the casing for controlling the circuit including the coil.
3. In anignition system, the-combination of a burglar proof casing mounted for limited rotary movement to control the timing of the spark discharge, a distributor and an induction coil for the distributor carried by the casing.
.4. In an ignition system, the combination of an open top burglar proof mechanism containing casing, a distributor contained therein, a retainer ring for securing the distributor in the casing, said distributor haiving its electric'terminals exposed exteriorly of the casing through said ring, and means for locking the ring in position.
5. In an ignition system, the combination of a burglar proof mechanism containing casing, a distributor contained therein, a closure for the casing, means for locking the closure to the casing, and a circuit. closer housed in the casing and controlled by said locking means.
6. In an ignition system, the combination of a distributor and a single burglar proof casing for enclosing all electrical parts of the distributor, said casing provided with an opening through which extends part of the distributor to permit authorized access to said part for mechanical adjustment and said casing acting to protect all other parts of the distributor thereby to defeat attempt to tamper with the electrical features of the distributor.
7. In an ignition system, the combination of a distributor and its associated coil and a. single burglar proof-casing for enclosing all electrical parts of the distributor and the electrical leads between the same and coil, and said casing provided with an opening and spark plug supplying leads extending through said opening to the distributor.
8. In an ignition system, the combination of a burglar proof casing having an opening, a distributor fitted in said opening and with parts exposed, and a retaining ring for securing the distributor in the casing and locking means for fastening the ring in place. v
9. In an ignition system, the combination of a burglar proof casing having an opening, a distributor fitted in said opening and with parts exposed, and a retaining ring for securing the distributor in-the casing, locking means for fastening the ring in placd, and means including said distributor for forming an electric circuit, and also including a manually actuated circuit closer housed within said casing.
10. In an ignition system, the combination of a burglar proof casing having an opening, a distributor fitted in said opening and with parts exposed, and a retaining ring for securing the distributor in the casing, locking means for fastenin the ring in place, and means including said distributor for forming an electric circuit, and also including a manually actuated circuit closer housed within said casing and operatively controlled by said locking means.
11. An ignition system including an induction coil, an interruptor, a key controlled circuit closer in the primary circuit of the coil and constituting part of the electrical -connection between the coil and the interruptor and burglar proof means for protecting said switch and its electrical connections between the coil and the interrupter, said coil having a part thereof extending through said burglar proof means and exppsed exteriorly of the same and said burglar proof means including a casing pro-' vided with a key opening for permitting the insertion of [the key for controlling said protected switch.
' 12. An ignition system including means for producing an electric spark provided .with mechanism for effecting a change in electric spark including a coi the timing of the spark, a manually actuated control for said means adapted to be set by authorized means and a burglar proof means for defeating unauthorized attempts to change the set condition of said control and permitting the manipulation of said mechanism.
13. In an ignition system,,the combination of means for producing an electric spark, a manually actuated control therefor means for locking the control and a single mechanism containing and burglar proof casing for protecting the vital parts of said protecting the control and its and a burglar proof casing protecting said.

In a device of the class described, the combination of elements coacting to form an electric circuit, said elements including in order an exposed circuit closer, the primary windings of an ignition coil, and a second circuit closer, elements forming a second circuit including the secondary windingsiof said coil, an exposed high tension lead, a distributor, and burglar proof means for protecting said distributor and said second circuit closer.
