v Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented m 4, 1915.
Application filed .l'une 18, 1914. SerialNo. 84515214.
T all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'Enxns'r C. VVILCOX, a citizen of the United btates, residing at Meriden, NewHavcn county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Ignition Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus for electrical ignition systems, the object of the invention being to so construct such devices to make them exceedingly compact and reliable, the various parts easily accessible for clean ing, replacement or repair. I
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing certain parts in elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view Fig. 3 is a-plan view with other parts removed.
l is a rotatable shaft which constitutes the various parts hereafter described.
having having 3 is a housing of cylindrical form a central passage for the shaft 1 and an upper and a lower chamber.
4 is a condenser located in the lower cham ber and held in suitable means as by a removable plate 5 and a spring ring 6 seated in an annular be inserted for the "condenser out when groove in the inner Wall of the lower cham-- I contact point 9 and a movable contact point 10, the latter being carried by an arm 11 hinged at 12 in the carrier 8. This arm' also preferably carries an anti-friction roller 13 which is operated by the cams 2-2. The
arm 11 is spring pressed as by spring 14 so as to normally press the contact point 10 mto engagement with the contact point 9.
The contact point 9 is electrically connected.
with a terminalor binding post 15 through the medium of abrush like connecting mem'. ber 16. The terminal member 15 is carried and so likewise as to make that is to say,
place and protected by any by the housing 3 and is suitably insulated therefrom as shown in F ig; 1. In the particular form shown, the contact point 10 is on a grounded. circuit through the frame. The inner end of the terminal 15 is provided with a contact head 17 against which the brush 16 may engage when the. interruptercarrier 8"is pushed into place. An,
insulating piece 18 at the base of the head 17 may serve as a key to guarantee the proper positioning of the carrier 8 within the upper chamber of the housing 3. The carrier 8 and interrupter parts are assembled as a unit and in the event it is desirable to doany work on the interrupter pfirtsthe carrier 8 maybe easily pulled out,
removed from the housing 3 and may be replacedby a new interrupter unit, or the contact elements of the interrupter may be repaired. The carrier 8 preferably fits friction tight in the housing 3. In the side of the carrier 8 1 preferably proformed of insulating material and having a chamber therein into which the upper end of the shaft 1 projects,
and in which chamber is located a distributerhead 23. The distributer head is preferably made of insulating material mounted upon, and so as to turn with, the shaft 1. This distributer head carries a-distributer brush 24 for a high tension current, and is spring pressed outwardly so as to engage the distributer terminals 25-25 arranged around the chamvide aslot 19 through which a small file her within the distributer housing 22 as shown. These terminals include suitable electrical connecting devices which respectively lead to the destinations of the hightension current.
26 is a ground terminal which is in suitable electrical connection with the brush 24. 27 is a springwasher held in place on the shaft 1 by the cotter pin 28, the function of which is to hold the cap 20 in place when the distributer housing is removed. \Vhen the distributer housing is'in place. the cap 20 will likewise beheld in place, since the distributer'housing is held'down in any suitable way, as by spring latches 29 29 which engage abutment studs 3030 on the housing 3, the latches 29 being carried-by. the distributer housing.
3 is an operating arm on the housing3 by which the operative angle of the timer and distributer parts relatively to the cams 2 a may be varied.
' As will be seen, the various parts may be very quickly put together or taken apart and hence in the event of breakage, any of the require attention, and by thisunit arrange- V sulated type.
parts may be parts, i V
A decided advantage -'is obtained by arranging the interrupter parts asa removable unit since it is these parts most frequently quickly replaced by other ment, in the event of a-serious injury, a
duplicate unit maybe introduced easily and quickly without discarding any of the other parts of th'e'apparatus.
- The condenser is electrically connected at one side by a brush 31 with the terminal 16 while the other side may be grounded by positive contact on the case or housing Obviously the invention applies whether the circuits are the grounded or the fully inlVhat I claim is: 1. In an igniter apparatus, a rotatable shaft, a housing supported thereon, a cam dr-iven' bysaid shaft, an interrupter unit ineluding interrupter parts arranged outside of said cam, said unit being arranged to be 1' bodilyapplied to and removable from said housing, means .for holding said unit in operative position in said housing, and a ter minal carried by said housing and insulated 3. In an igniter apparatus, a rotatable 'therefrom, and arranged to be electrically connected with one of said interrupted parts.
2. In an igniter apparatus, a rotatable shaft, a housing supported thereon, a cam driven by said shaft,an interrupter unit including interrupter parts arranged outside of said cam, said unit being arranged to be bodily appliedto and removable from said housing, means for holding said unit in 0perative position in said housing, and a terminal carried by said housing and insulated therefrom, and arranged to be. electrically connected with one of said interrupter parts, and a distributer element comprising a part carried by saidlhousing and another part detachably carried by said shaft.
shaft, a housingsupported thereon, a cam driven by said shaft, an interrupter unit in -cluding interrupter parts, said unit being arranged to be bodily applied to and removable from said housing, meansfor hold- .ing said unitin operative position in-said said terminal.
