WITNESSES ATTOFKN EY llllllllED @TATE PATENT JAMES L.. MCPHERSON, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTIE HOLDER AND PRESSER.
application med August 1, 191.7,
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES L. MCPHER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Necktie Holders and Pressers, of which the following is a specification.
'l his invention relates to anecktie holder and pressing device and the object thereof is to provide a simply constructed and elfi cient device of this character in which a plurality of ties may be held and pressed and from which one or more ties may be removed without interfering with the others contained therein.
Another object is to provide a holder of this character composed of two clamping plates which are adjustable relatively to each other to provide for a variable number of ties being held and pressed between them` With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of 'the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
.lln the accompanying drawings:
Figure l represents a front elevation of this improved device in closed position,
li'ig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on the line @Jn-2 of Fig. l,
lllig. 3 is a view in elevation with the plates shown open and parts broken away, an(
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view with the tie holding slotted member shown in downturned position.
lin the embodiment illustrated, the tie holder constituting this invention comprises two clamping plates l and 2 hingedly connected at one edge as shown at 3 and which are preferably shaped to conform to the ends of the ties to be held and pressed thereby. Yl`hese plates l and 2 may be co1n posed of any suitable material and decorated on their outer faces in any suitable or desired manner. The inner faces of these plates are lined with felt, cloth or other suitable fabrie which will prevent injury to ties clamped between them.
Specication of Letters .Patent.
lllaitented elaine, l5, Mtl@ Serial No. 183,958.
Connected with the upper edge of plate 2 and hinged thereto as shown at ll is a transversely slotted plate 5 thereby forming a plurality of cross strips G spaced apart'l a sufficient distance to permit the insertion between them of the folded portion of the tie to be pressed as will be hereinafter more fully described. This slotted plate 5 is pro vided at its hinged end on opposite sldes with projections or lugs 7 which are designed to engage plate 2 for limiting the downward swinging movement of said plate 5.
Apertured ears 8 project laterally from the opposite side edges of plate 2 at its upper end and are designed as attaching means for connecting the device to a wall or other suitable support. T he free side edges of plates l and Q are provided, one with a spring tongue 9 and the other with a slotted latch member l through which the spring tongue 9 is designed to project and to engage. By providing a. plurality of these slots in this member l0 the device is designed to accommodate a variable number of ties and to so clamp them that they will be pressed and the creases made therein by wearing removed.
ln the use of this device, the small ends of the ties to be held and pressed thereby are rst drawn through the slots formed between the cross bars (i of plate and then folded intermediately of their ends and said small ends passed over the cross-bars and down through an adjacent slot, it being understood that one tie is passed through each slot and the free ends of the ties lie between the plates 1 and 2 which latter are made sufliciently large to entirely encompass said ends. After the ties are so positioned, the plates l and 2 are folded together and secured by means of the spring tongue 9 being passed through one of the slots in the latch member 10. By clamping these two plates tightly together it will be obvious that the ties between them will be pressed and all wrinkles removed so that when it is desired to use a tie, the plates may be opened by disengaging the members 9 and 10 and removing one of the ties without in any way interfering with those remaining.
lt is to be understood that when the ties have been inserted and are in operative posi tion within the holder, the plate 5 will drop down into a plane at right angles te platee lll@ slots are used. It however, these slots are made far enough apart, two ties might bc inserted in one of them and the means for securing the plates 1n clamped position, be-
ing adjustable, will permit quite a number to be held between them.
I claim l. A tie holder of the class described comprising a pair of clamping members, means :tor connecting said members in closed position, and a hinged tie receiving member carried by one end of said members, and opening in a direction at right angles to that in which said members open.
2. A tie holder of the class described comprising a pair ot' clamping members, means for connecting said members in closed position, and a hinged tie receiving member carried by one end of said members, said member being provided with a plurality of transversely extending slots through which Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, ID. C.
the folded intermediateportion of the ties are designed to pass.
ln a device oi the class described, a
pair of plates hingedly connected at one edge, means for adjustably connecting their opposed edges, a hinged plate carried by the upper edge of one of said plates, said hinged plate being provided with a plurality ot' transversely extending slots, and means for limiting the downward movement of said plate. l. A device of the lclass described comprising a pair ofclamping plates tapering toward one end and hingedly connected at one edge, means for /adjustably connecting their free edges, a plate hinged to the smaller end of one of said clamping plates and having laterally extending stop lugs for limiting its downward swinging movement, said hinged plate being provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced transversely extending slots.
In testimony whereof aiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
