H. BREWER.
' INSULATED GRIP FOR BAYONET CARRYING SHOULDER ARMS- APPUCATION FILED OCT. 22' I91]- 1,253,665. Patented Jan. 15,1918.
to form an insulating air-space UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY BREWER, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR T0 WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
' INSULATED GRIP FOR BAYONET-CARRYING SHOULDER-ARMS.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that I, Hrm nr BREWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Insulated Grips for Bayonet arrying Shoulder-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of, the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a broken view in side elevation of a bayonet-carrying shot gun provided with my improved insulated muzzle-end Fig. 2 a view of the barrel and grip in transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 a view of the barrel and rip in transverse section on the line 3-3 of ig. 1. Fig. 4 a view in transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, omitting the bayonet.
Fig. 5 a detached view in rear end elevation of the grip.
My invention has for its object to provide simple and effective means for protecting the hand of the soldier while grasping the heated gun-barrel in using a bayonet mounted thereupon, as well as to improve his grip upon the barrel.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carryin out my invention, as herein shown, I emp 0y a rounded, shell-like sheetmetal grip 5 a little more than semicircular in cross-section and enough larger in diameter than the diameter of the n-barrel 6 between it and the same. At its forward end, the said grip 5 is secured by rivets 8 to the rear end of the split sleeve of a bayonet-mount 9 mounted upon the muzzle-end of the barrel and of any approved construction, the said bayonet mount, as herein shown, having a mounting-stud 10 at its forward end and a depending locking-head 11 at its rear end forengagement respectively by the guard 12 and pommel 13 of a bayonet which has a blade 14 and a scale-handle 15. At its rear end, the grip 5 is turned inward at a rlght 'ends, the grip is supported in spaced relation to the gun-barrel by inwardly struck nubs 17. By preference, and as herein shown, the grip is formed throughout its length with ventilating openings 18 which provide a free circulation of air between it and the barrel, and also enable it to be firmly grasped bv the soldier whose hand slips less readily upon a perforated than upon a smooth surface.
As shown, the sleeve of the bayonet-mount 9, is split throughout its length on one side of its center to adapt it to be clamped upon the gun-barrel by clamping-screws 19. The particular construction of the bayonetmount, however, is no part of mypresent invention.
By means of my improved grip, the soldier is enabled to grip the barrel and use the arm as a bayonet arm, while the barrel is still hot. from firing the arm.
I claim 1. The combination with the barrel of a shoulder arm, of a bayonet-mount applied to the muzzle-end of the said barrel, and an insulated shell-like sheet-metal grip applied overthe barrel, insulated therefrom by an air-space and supported at its forward end upon the said bayonet-mount.
2. The combination with the barrel of a shoulder-arm, of a bayonet-mount applied to the muzzle-end of the said barrel, and an insulated, shell-like grip supported at its forward end upon the said bayonet-mount and at its rear end upon the said barrel, whereby the grip is maintained in spaced relation thereto.
3. The combination with the barrel of a shoulder arm, of a bayonet-mount applied to the muzzle-end of the said barrel, and an insulated, shell-like grip applied over the muzzle-end of the barrel and supported at its forward end upon the said bayonet-mount and provided with inwardly extending nubs by means of which it is maintained in spaced relation to the gun-barrel with an air-space between it and the same.
4. The combination with the barrel of a shoulder arm, of a bayonet-mount applied to the muzzle-end of the said barrel, and a shell-like grip supported at its forward end upon the said bayonet-mount and formed at its rear end with an inwardly turned supporting-flange which rests upon the said bar rel and provided at points intermediate of its ends with inwardly projecting nubs resting upon the barrel for maintaining its spaced relation thereto.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this azsspeo specification in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses.
v HENRY BREWER.
