This invention relates toimprovements in sl'iipping cases or boxes of that type pri- 4marily adapted for the transportation of lbottles in a filled or emptied condition.

A further lobject of the invention is the provision of a device of `the above-stated character wherein `an improved fastening `means is employed forl securing the cover to at all times lie below the plane of the top.

A cover 8 is provided for closing the shipping case 5. 1n order to secure the cover 8 to the caso without theemployment of nails, screws, or the like, whereby avoiding the splitting or mai-ring of either the cover or goods, and further to permit of the case being further utilized Ato return the empty bottles or the like containing the goods shippedtherein, I providean improved fastening device 9for fastening the cover to said box. The fasteningldevice in this particular instance embodies a pair of substantially U-shaped mctallic clips 10 having spaced parallel limb portions 11 and a connecting portion 12. The clips 10 straddle the upper ends of the end walls 6 of the case and position the connecting portions 12 thereof within the notches 7, the connecting portions being dis* posed flush with the uppermost edges of the end walls 6. The limb portions 11 of the clips 1() are apertured as at 13 for permitting a removable fastening device to pass therethrough .and through the outer and inner faces of the end walls 6 of 'the case for attaching the clips thereto. An up- .standing threaded stud 11i is iixedly secured to the connecting portion 12 of 4the clips by the welding of the'same or the like thereto.

The cover 8 is cut out along its opposite transverse ends to provide a pair of spaced longitudinally alined cut out portions l5. A metallic strip 16 is fastened along the opposite upper transverse ends of the cover 8. and `bent around the `opposite side edges thereof as at 17 and thence bent inwardly and at right angles to the portion 17 and apertured as at 18 for receiving a fastening device 19 for permanently fastening each of the strips to the under side of the cover.

The portions 17 of the strips are seated within notched out portions 20 for positioning the strip flush with the opposite longitudinal side edges of the cover. The said metallic strips 16 are stamped downwardly as at 21 at spaced intervals throughout its length to provide a pair of substantially U-shaped resilient keepers 22, the said keep-V ers 22 are disposed within the cut out por-V tions 15 of the cover and have their limb portions 23 in Contact with the opposed faces as the occasion may demand.

In order to lock the cover securely to the shipping case and to prevent any accidental loss thereof, I provide locking nuts 25 which when in a tightened position are disposed wholly below the plane of the cover and thereby prevent any accidental tampering or lstriking of the nuts during the storage or shipment of the cases.

From the foregoing description, i1; will be apparent that after the receptacles containing the goods to be shipped have been packed in the shipping cases, the cover may be readily applied to the box in the manner above described and thereby prevent the use of the ordinary fastening means such as screws, nails, or the like, and thereby prevent the splitting or marring of the case or cover to such an extent as to prevent any further use of the case. With my improved fastening means, however, it is my object, that after the vessels, which may be bottles or the like have been emptied, such vessels may be returned in the same boX in which they were received.

The numeral 26 designates a preferred form of wrench having a socket 27 adapted to lit the locking nuts 25 to permit of a convenient opening or closing of the box It is my object to conveniently attach this tool to a shipment of crates or an individual tool may be furnished to customers receiving such goods.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the device together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I

.desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such lchanges may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having described the invention, what is claimed is:

l. A shipping crate embodying end walls, a covertherefor havingfspaced notches, a series of studs secured upon the upper edges of the end walls of the crate, a locking strip connected along the oppositetransverse ends of the cover and struck downwardly atportions intermediate its length to provide spaced apertured keepers having their limbs contactingk with the opposite walls of the notches formed in saidcover, the said studs of the crateprojecting through the apertures of the keepers, and nuts threaded on said studs for causing the locking actionoof the cover to said crate. 2. A shipping crate comprising end walls, a cover therefor, a fastening device for securing a closure to a crate embodying a se-l ries of threaded studs secured to the crate, a locking strip connected with the'opposite transverse ends ofy the cover and struck downwardly at portions intermediate its length to provide spaced resilient apertured U shaped keepers, the studs projecting through the apertures of said keepers, and nuts threadedly mounted on `the studs for locking the closure tothecrate.

3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a closure thereforhaving its opposits transverse ends formed withspaced cut-out portions, a locking strip connected to the opposite transverse ends ofthe cover and provided throughout its length with downwardly bent resilient U-shaped keepers, the said keepers fitting within the cut-out portions of the cover, a series of studs carried by the receptacle and projecting through the keepers, and means threadedly mounted on the studs and seated within the said keepers for detachably connecting the closure upon said crate.
