Description

H. KAISER.
SHOE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 31. l9l6.
Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
Patented Jan. flit, ilttfltl.
Application filed May at, 1am. serial no. water.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HENRY KAISER, a citizen of the United States of America, resid This invention relates to a tongue for lumbermens. rubbers, shoe packs, shoes or the like and to an arrangement thereof, whereby that portion which is most liable to encounter moisture is made water proof without impairing the flexibility of the tongue or causing discomfort to the wearer.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view of a shoe tongue a plied to a rubber, embodying features of t e invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view in detail of the lower portion of the tongue;
Fig. 3 is a view partially in section and partially in perspective, of a portion of the tongue, and
Fig. 4 is a view in transverse section of a modification thereof.
As shown herein, a rubber or shoe having" of the vamp and'counter. Between the lines of stitching 5 (see Fig. 2), a shield 7 isapplied of suitable shape to smoothly overlie the contiguous portion of the bellows ton no 4. while there Is considerable clearance etween the marginal portion 8 of'the shield is afiordedby the general contour of the shield 7 and by the incurved marginal portions 9 and 10 thereof.
The shield is preferably of waterproof material, such as pro erly treated leather or the like, and it may e of a single piece as indicated in the detail view of Fig. a, or it may consist of an outer layer of leather 11, and an intermediate layer of pantosote or like waterproof fabric 12, as shown in Fig. a.
As a result of the construction, a shoe is obtained that fits smoothly over the instep of the wearer and presents a tongue which is impervious to water at the point where snow and water are most likely to collect, and that thereby prevents any discomfort to the user.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What ll claim is 1. The combination of the vamp of a shoe with a tongue includin a shield of waterproof material approprlately secured along its margin to the lower portion of the shoe tongue between the margins thereof and arranged with the tongue to overlie the contlguous margin of the vamp.
2. The combination with the quarters of a shoe of a bellows tongue stitched thereto along its edges having a shield of waterproof material conformed to the lower portion thereof and secured to the outerface thereof by stitching along the margin of the shield that is within the line of stitching of the tongue to the quarters.
3. The combination with a shoe having a bellows tongue stitched to the vamp and quarters thereof, of a shield of waterproof material secured along its margin to the outer face of the lower portion of the tongue by lines of stitching com letely within and separate from the lines o attachment of the tongue to the quarters, the tongue and shield havmg lower registered margins adapted to overlie the contiguous margin of the shoe vamp.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HEY Karena.
