To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER E. SCHINDELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tolna, in the county of Nelson, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in wagons and has particular reference to an end gate therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide improved means for locking the relatively adjustable section of the gate in closing position so as t0 avoid accidental displacement thereof and also permit of readily and quickly adjusting said sections to remove the ate. g Another object is to provide an end gate of this character, which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, some of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a portion of a wagon body showing the end gate applied thereto and in locked position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sections of the end gate in adjusted positions whereby the gate may be detached.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the gate.

In the drawing, the numeral l0 indicates the rear of a wagon body in which the end gate is adapted to be mounted in the usual manner. The end gate is shown in what is believed to be its preferred form and comprises relatively andlongitudinally adjustable sections 11 and 12, the former having at its outer end the transverse guide block 13 and also having secured to the inner side thereof the spaced guide straps 14 having the angular extension 15 at the ends thereof which project outwardly and receive therebetween for longitudinal movement, the section 12 of the gate.
Preferably secured to the transverse guide block 13 are adjacent ends of the upper and lower resilient arms or strips 16 which extend longitudinally of the sections 11 and 12 and outside of the latter and in engagement therewith when said sections are in their locking positions. The other ends of the straps 16 are provided with eyes 17 for receiving the ends of a crank shaft 18 mounted transversely of the section 12 in brackets or bearings 19 and having extending from its intermediate portion an operating handle 20 which is adapted to be swung to the position shown in Fig. 2 so that the sections 11 and 12 will be adjusted in opposite directions thus lessening the distances between the outer ends thereof so that the gates may be readily and quickly detached from the wagon.
In order that the sections 11 and 12 may be securely retained in closing position, the crank shaft 18 is provided with a locking lug 21 adapted to be engaged by the catch 22 of the resilient latching member 23 secured at one of its ends to the section 12. vWhen this catch 22 is in engagement with the lug 21 rotation of the shaft 18 in the direction necessary to adjust the sections 11 and l2 will be prevented and in order that such adjustment may be made it is necessary for the operator to release the catch 22 from the lug 21 whereupon said shaft 18 may be rotated. When again locking the sections in closing position the shaft 18 is operated in the opposite direction and the cam surface 24 of the lug 21 will force the catch 22 outwardly until the sections are properly adjusted whereupon the catch will again resiliently engage said lug to prevent further movement thereof.
What is claimed is:-
An end gate for wagons comprising a pair of relatively and longitudinally adjustable sections, means for guiding said sections, arms having adjacent ends secured to one of said sections and extending longitudinally of both sections, a crank shaft carried by lug to prevent rotation of said shaft when the other section and having its ends conthe sections are n closing position.
