Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led .Tune 9, 1914. Serial No. 843,962.
rv l` To all w'wm t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HARRY J. Hroii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a filing appliance for sales bills and other similar papers, in which a plurality of bill holders are 0peratively mounted in a fireproof case comprising a rectangular base section and a similar cover section adapted to be swung upon the base section to incase the bill holders when closed and to form a back for the same when opened.
In a former application, liled J une l, 1914, Serial N o. 841,976, a filing appliance of this type or character has been illustrated, described and claimed, in which a series of hinged bill holders and an index frame are pivoted to the rim of the rear end of the coversection of the case; and in a subsequent application led June 8, 1914, Serial No. 843,602, another filing appliance of this type or character has been illustrated, described and claimed, in which a second series of hinged bill holders are carried on a tray having operative connections with the index frame for swinging the tray to and fro and means for guiding the forward end of the tray over and upon the forward rim of the base section, to bring the second series of holders into operative position when the index frame is rotated into upright position.
'Ihe object of the present invention is to provide suitable supporting, operating and guiding means for such a second series of holders, so that the same can be carried not only downward into the base section of the case, but rearward into the rear end thereof; and also to provide suitable guiding means for the forward end of the index frame so that the same need not rest or slide upon the second series of holders.
The objects of the invention are attained by the preferred embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the case, showing the cover section closed downward upon the base section thereof;
Fig. 2, a side eleva-tion section of the ease, showing the location of the bill holders, the index frame, and the supporting, ,operating and guiding parts, when the cover section of the case is closed downward Aupon the base section thereof;
Fig. 3, a side elevation showing the cover section swung upward upon the rear end of the base section, and showing the. location of the bill holders and index frame in this relation of the parts when the lirst series of bill holders are rotated into upright position with the index frame in reclined position and the second series of bill holders carried forward part way from the rear end of the base section; and
Fig. 4, a similar side elevation section, showing the index frame rotated and located in upright position, and the second series of bill holders carried upward and forward into operating position with three of the holders rotated into upright position.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
The case is composed of the substantially similar rectangular bottom or base section 1, and the top or cover section 2, which are operatively7 connected 'together by means of the guiding hinge brackets 3, one being located on each side of the rear end portion of the base section. The first series of bill holders 4, 4a and 4b, are hinged together at the lower rear ends` and the forward holder 4a is pivoted to the bearingbrackets 5, secured on the rear end rim of the cover section; to which bearing brackets is also pivoted the rear end of the index frame 6, by means of the bracket 7.
The guiding hinge brackets constitute a connection between the sections of the case by means of which the rear end of the cover is shifted forward to rest squarelv upon the rear end of the base section with the top of the cover section in alinement with the rear end of the base section, when the cover section is swung upward upon the base section as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; and so that the rear end of the cover section is shifted rearward into alinement with the rear end of the base section, when the cover section is closed downward thereon as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The details of these guiding hinge connections are illustrated and described in said former application, Serial No. 841,976, and will not be repeated herein.
The index frame 6 is provided on each side with a roller 8. journaled in a bracket frame downward within the base section, as shown 1n Fig. 2. The upper forward end of the tracks 10, arebeveled or flattened,VV substantiallyv iorizontally, upon which ends the rollers 8V may ride when the forward end of the frame is carried over the forward rim of the base section, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the frame need not slide upon this rim.
The swinging tray 11, is provided for the second series of bill holders 4, 4a and 4"', the rear end of which tray is carried bythe lateral pivots-12, journaled in the lower ends of the pendent plates 13, secured to the rear end of the index frame; and the forward portion of the tray is normally supported on the rollers 14, pivoted in the brackets 175, formed or secured on each side of the tray, which rollers ride upon the bottom of the case, when the tray is carried into the rear end thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, orupon the curved tracks 16, secured to the sides of the base section, for carrying the forward end of the tray upward as shown in Fig. 3, to pass over and upon the forward rim of the base section as shown in Fig. 4.
The parts are so proportioned and arranged, that when the cover is closed downward upon the base section of the case, the tray and second series of holders are located in the lower rear portion of the base section with the rollers 14 riding upon thebottom thereof, and the index frame is located in the upper rear portion of the base section, with' its rollers 8 riding upon the inclined tracks Vl() therein, and vthe first series of holdersV extending upward into the cover section of the case as shown in Fig. 2.
When the cover section of the case is swung upward upon the rear end of the bot-V tom section thereof, the index frame is carried forward by its pivotal connections with the rear rim of the cover section; in which movement the rollers 8 ride upward upon the tracks l0, and carry the forward end of the frame upward to pass freely over and kupon the forward rim of the base section, as shown in Fig. 3.'
At the same time, the rear end of the tray 11 is carried forward and upward by its pivotal connectionwith the pendent plates on the rear end of the frame, during which movement the tray rollers 14 first ride upon the bottom of the case and then upward upon the curved tracks 16 into the substantially horizontal position shown in Fig. 3, in the forward upward portion of the base section.
Then the index frame 6 is rotated into upright position as shown in Fig. 4, where it may be locked by the latch 17, the pendent plates, which together with the frame form.
a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the rear end of the cover section, carryv therearend of the vtray. upward [andi forward, Sini which movement the tray rollers .14ridinglon the Y curved tracks 16, carry the forward 'end of the tray upward, over and upon the forward rim of the base section of the case, as shown in Fig. 4;'in which position the tray rollers ina-yiris'e free ofthe tracks while the tray is sliding` and restingupon the rim of the base section. t v
The second series of bill holders`4, 4W, andY 4? are hinged *together` at theV lower rear ends, andtheforward lower holder'la, is pivoted at its hingedend to the rear end of the'swinging tray 11, as by Vmeans ofthe Y pivot bearings 18, provided'thereon; and it is evident :that when the 'swinging' ltray is carried upward and forward into the posi tion shown in Fig. 4, these holders may be rotated upward from their normalY reclined position uponithe tray, eithersinglyorjcollV lectively, into upright position as shown in Fig. 4, giving access-to the bills heldby the spring clamps 19 mounted Von the holders,- in a manner well knownV in this art. 5 When one or morefof thesecondelies of bill holders are rotated into upright position,it will be understood that the upright index frame serves as anY abutment against which the free end of the upperl rear bill holder 4". rests andislides as the various holders are rotated upwardand downward. Iclaimz'wA f`` 1. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with guiding hinge connecl tions for swinging and Ashifting the cover section upon the base section,.a'frame ha'vf ing its rear end pivoted to the rear end of the cover section and having rollers on each'side, and inclined tracks on the sides of the base section upon which the rollers ride for carry; ing the forward end upward and freely over the forward` rim of the base section 4when the frame is carried forward bythe operation of the cover section upon the base section.A l
