To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMERsON B. MOSELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in account registers, more particularly to that type of account registers in which is arranged a series of pivotally mounted frames or leaves, each of which carries a plurality of devices for holding bills or sales slips.
Among the objects of my invention are to improve the construction and operation of this class of account registers, facilitate the withdrawal of a series of frames or leaves from the casing proper and its replacement therein, and to so connect and correlate the bill carrying frames as to make it possible to compactly arrange them for the purpose of storing them in a safe or vault.
Other objects of my invention will he obvious from an account register embodying it, whic i I have herein selected for the purpose of illustration.
Figure 1 is a view of an account register embodying my improvements, the casing being shown in vertical longitudinal section and the bill carrying frames and their con necting and guiding frame in side elevation. In the drawings, 1 indicates as an entirety a suitable casing or housing, which may be made of any desired material. For the purpose of illustration I have shown it as comprising a base 2, rear wall 3, side walls 1', and sub-base or platform 5 to which is hinged at 6 a top plate or cover 7 for the base, said cover resting at its front end upon a front wall 8. The lower part of the cabinet, which may be considered the desk part, may be employed for any desired purpose and constructed and arranged in any suitable manner, it being understood that my invention is applica le for use in any well known style of account register casing or housing.

These leaves need not be of any particular construction in so far as the leaves themselves are concerned, and in so far as they are adapted to carry a plurality of sets of bills or sales slips. For the purpose of illustration I have shown them as comprising a plate 10, of any suitable material, on both sides of which, suitably spaced apart, are ribs or partitions 11, dividing the leaves up into bill receivin sections. The side edges of the bill carrying frames may be, if desired. strengthened or built up in any preferred manner. I have shown them pro vided with forwardly extending flanges or ribs 12 and rearwardly extending ribs or flanges l3. Ar anged transversely at the bottom of each bill carrying frame is a rod or shaft 14, which at either end extends slightly beyond the adiacent edge of the bill carrying frame, as indicated at 15 to form a pintle or pivot.
Any desired form of spring clip or device for holding the bills or sales slips in position upon the frames 9 may be employed. For this purpose I have shown spring clips 16.
The bill carrying frames 9 are connected together for the purpose of withdrawal from and replacement in the casing. and for relative positioning of the frames at such. times, by means of a connecting and positioning frame 17. This latter preferably through which the pivot extends.
consists of a. rear wall 18 and side walls 19, Q0, of triangular shape and with their top edges at a downward forward inclination. Each of the side walls 19 and 20 has a series of slots .31, equal in number to the number of bill carrying frames to be guided by the frame 17. The bottoms of all of the slots 21 are in a common plane, but the slots increase in length from front to rear of frame 17. Furthermore. the distance between the bottom of. two adiacent grooves is preferably less than the distance between the tops thereof, for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth. The series of bill carrying frames 9 is arranged within the connecting and positioning frame 17. The pintles or pivots 15 at the sides of each bill carrying frame enter corresponding slots 21 in the sides 19, 20 of the frame 17, and are free to move up and down in said slots and be guided by the walls thereof.

In account registers of this class, for the purpose of facilitating the operation of the bill carrying leaves. which are preferably indexed at their upper ends, it has been found desirable to have the upper ends of the said bill carrying frames project one above the other from front to rear of the series. hen the pivots 15 on the bill carrying frames 9 are all at the bottoms of their respective guiding slots 21 in the frame 17,
the upper edges of the said frames are all in the same plane as indicated in Fig. 9. However. when the said pivots are at the tops of their respective slots 21, the upper edges of the bill carrying frames project one above the other from front to the rear of the series, as indicated in Fig. 1. In order to accomplish this pyramidal relation of the upper ends of the bill carrying frames when they are in operative position within the casing, different plans have suggested themselves. In Figs. 1 and 4 for this purpose I have shown triangular shaped blocks 24, 25, secured to the platform or sub base 5 of the casing, and having their upper edges arranged at a downward forward inclination, the plane of the said upper edges of the rests 24, 25, being parallel to the plane of the upper edges of the bill carrying frames when the said edges are arranged one above the other from the front to the rear of the series as desired for indexing purposes. It will be understood, assuming that the positioning and connecting frame 17 and the series of bill carrying frames are arranged for storage purposes as illustrated in Fig. 9, and it is desired to introduce them into the casing, that all that is necessary is to direct the frame 17 between the guides 23, 23, and into the recess 22, and that simultaneously the rests 24, 25 engaging with the lower edges of the frames 9, will elevate the said frames, forcing upwardly their pivots 15 within their respective slots 21, until the top edges of the bill carrying frames bear the desired pyramidal relation to each other.
In order to facilitate the operation of the bill carrying frames, I have found it desirable to provide means for counter-balancing the said frames. Vhile this may be accomplished in any well known manner, I have devised spring mechanism for the purpose which is shown in the drawings. 26 are bars or plates arranged one at either side of the casing 1, and suitably secured to the side walls 4 thereof. Each of these bars 26 carries a series of inwardly extending rods 27, which may be suitably secured to the said bars or integrally formed therewith as desired. The number of these rods 27 corre sponds to the number of bill carrying frames 9 in the frame 17. Vashers or heads 28 are rigidly secured to the inner ends of the rods 27. 29 are coiled springs, each encircling one of the rods 27 and having its outer end attached either to the said rod or to the plate 26; the inner free end of the spring 29 is extended upwardly and inwardly as indicated at 29', and is arranged to extend into the plane of a laterally projecting lug or pin 30 on one of the bill carrying frames. The two springs 29 in engagement at either side of each bill carrying frame with the lugs 30 thereon, normally tend to swing the free ends of said frame rearward about the aXis of the rod 14 of the frame. The tension of these springs 29 may be of any desired amount.
To facilitate the removal of the positioning and connecting frame 17 and the bill carrying frames therein from the casing, I have found it advantageous to withdraw the free ends of the springs 29 from the plane of the lugs 30 on the bill carrying frame with which they normally engage. For this purpose, in inwardly turned arms 31, 3:2 at either end of the plate 26, is mounted a rocking bar 33 carrying a plurality of hooks 34 corresponding in number to the number of springs 29 at each side of the register.
The upper end of each rock bar 33 carries a crank arm 36 to which one end of a tension spring 37 is connected, the other end of said spring being suitably secured to the adjacent side wall of the casing. At its lower end each rock bar 33 carries a thumb lever 39. In order to engage the hooks 34 with their respective springs, all that is necessary is to pull forward the upper ends of the entire series of bill carrying frames, then rock downwardly the rock bars 33 until they are in the position illustrated in Fig. 7. The bill carrying frames are then allowed to move rearwardly at their upper ends until the springs 29 have entered their respective hooks 34, as indicated in Fig. 7, when the rock bar 33 is released and under the action of the spring 37 is rocked so as to withdraw the free ends 29 of the springs 29 which it controls from the plane of the lugs 30 on the same side of the bill carrying frames. The bill carrying frames and their positioning and connecting frame 17 may be then readily and freely withdrawn from the casing.
As hereinbefore stated, the adjacent slots 21 in the side walls 19, 20, of the positioning and connecting frame 17 are less distance from each other at their bottoms than at their tops, that is, they diverge upwardly relatively to each other. This is for the pur pose of bringing the bill carrying frames as closely together, in fact, in contact with each other when they are arranged in position for storage. See Fig. 9, and for having the frames somewhat separated from each other when in pyramidal relation to each other to facilitate their oscillation about their respective pivots.
In Figs. and 11 I have illustrated a modi ied form of connecting and positioning frame 17 for the bill carrying frames or leaves 9. In it the slots 21 at their upper ends are curved rerrwardly and then downwardly to form bearings 5 .0 for the pivots on the bill carrying frames. It will be understood that in this construction the bill carr ing frames may be elevated in their respective slots in any suitable manner, and then pressed rearvvardlr and their respective pintles l3 allowed to enter the bearings i The springs 29 bearing against the lugs 30 on the bill carrying frames. in this modifind construction serve the double purpose of co'utcrbrilancinaj the frai'nes and keeping the pi ots l properly positioned in thei be: ings 40.

In fact. to those skilled in the art of making account registers. many alterations in construction and many widely differing embodiments and a l)ll('t1il()liS of my invention will suggest themselves without departing from the scope and spirit thereof. My disclosures and description herein are purely illustrative and are not intended to he in any sense limiting.

An, account register having in combination a Tflurality of bill holder frames of uniform size. each provided with pivots adjacent one edge thereof. and means for supporting the frames when in use with their free ends in stepped relationship to each other. said means comprising series of pivotal bearings arranged in an inclined plane and adapted to receive the respective pivots of the hill holder frames and series o guides. each termiimting at one end in one of said pivotal bearings and having its other end in a plane at an angle to the inclined plane of said ivotal bearings.
In an account register. the combination of a plurality of bill holder frames of uniform sire. piiots for each of said bill holder frames adjacent one edge thereof. and a series of guides for said frame pivots by which said frames. single or in groups. may be guided to and fro from a position in which they are in substantialli a rectangular paclr to one in which their free ends are in stepped relationship to each other. each said guide terminating in a pivotal bearing to receive the fram pivot guided by it. and said pivotal bearings being arranged in an inclined plane to position and support said frames with their free ends in stepped relationship to each other.

An account register comprising a plurality of uniform sized bill carrying frames having at opposite sides laterally extending pivots. supporting means for said frames comprising two members arranged at opposite sides of said frames, each of said members having a series of slots, and each slot of one series forming with a slot of the other series a pair of guides arranged to slidably receive the pivots of an adjacent bill carrying frame, and each slot having a closed end stepped relative to the closed ends of adjoining slots and forming a bearing for one pivot of the adjacent frame, whereby the latter is oscillatable about the axes of its pivots, and means for retaining the pivots of each frame at the bearing ends of the adjacent slots.

An account register comprising a series of uniform sized bill carrying frames, each having at both sides lateral extensions. a pair of plates arranged one at either side of said series of bill carrying frames and each having a, series of guides of differing lengths. the lateral extensions on said bill carrying frames entering corresponding guides in said plates, a casing, and means engaging said lateral extensions for retaining said bill carrying frames with their free ends in stepped relationship to each other from front to rear of the series and oscillatable. single or in groups.
7. An account register comprising a se ries of bill holding frames having at both sides lateral extensions, :1 pair of side Walls arranged one at either side of said bill carrying frames and each having a series of guides, said guides of each series terminating at one end in stepped relation to each other from front to rear and the other end of each series terminating, in a plane at substantially right angles to said guide, and the lateral extensions on said bill carrying frames entering corresponding guides in said side Walls and movable therein, and means for retaining at Will said bill carrying frames in stepped relation to each other With their lateral extensions at the ends of their respective guides in stepped relationship to each other and oscillatable about the axes of their lateral extensions, respectively.
8. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames, a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, connections between the bill carrying frames and said positioning and connecting frame arranged to permit the oscillation of each bill carrying frame and a predetermined longitudinal movement thereof relative to said positioning and connecting frame, said longitudinal movement varying in distance for the respective bill carrying frames according to their position in the series, and means for moving said bill carrying frames longitudinally in one direction.
9. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames, a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, connections between the bill carrying frames and said positioning and connecting frame arranged to permit the oscillation of each bill carrying frame and a predetermined longitudinal movement thereof relative to said positioning and connecting frame, said longitudinal movement varying in distance for the respective bill carrying frames according to their position in the series, and means for simultaneously positioning said bill carrying frames in said connecting and positioning frame.
10. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames, a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, means, including pivots, for connecting said bill carrying frames to said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the longitudinal movement of said bill carrying frames relative to said connecting and positioning frame from a position in Which the free ends of said bill carrying frames extend one beyond the other from front to rear of the series to a position in which the said free ends lie in a common plane at right angles to said bill carrying frames, and means for moving the bill carrying frames into operative position relative to the said connecting and positioning frame.
11. An account register comprising a casing, a series of bill carrying frames, a removable connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, connections between each of said bill carrying frames and said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the oscillation of said bill carrying frames and their adjustment relative to said positioning frame from a position in Which the free ends of said bill carrying frames are in a common plane to a position in which they are arranged in stepped relation one above the other from front to rear of the series, and a device automatically operating to position the bill carrying frames When the connecting and positioning frame is inserted in the casing.
12. An account register, comprising a series of uniform sized bill carrying frames, a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, connections between each of said bill carrying frames and said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the oscillation of said bill carrying frames and their vertical adjustment relative to said positioning frame from a position in Which the free ends of said bill carrying frames are in a common horizontal plane to a position in which they are arranged in stepped relation one above the other from front to rear of the series, and means for moving the bill carrying frames from the first mentioned relative position to the latter one.
13. An account register comprising a casing, a series of bill carrying frames arranged for ready introduction into and removal from said casing, a series of counter-balancing elements in said casing. one counterbalancing element for each bill carrying frame, and means for simultaneously connecting said counter-balancing elements With and releasing them from said bill carrying frames.
14. An account register comprising a casing. a series of bill carrying frames arranged for ready introduction into and removal from said casing. a series of counterbalanc ng springs. one spring for each of said bill carrying frames, and means for simultaneously connecting said counter-balance springs with and releasing them from said bill carrying frames.
15. An account register comprising a series of bill carr ing frames, a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames. connections between the bill carrying frames and said positioning and connecting frame arranged to ermit the oscillat on of each bill carrying frame and a prede ermined longitd nal movement thereof relative to said pos tioning and connecting frame. said longitud nal movement var ing in d stance fo" the res ective bill carrying f ames according to their position in the series. and means for counterbalancing the bill carr ing frames.
16. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames. a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carryin frames. means connecting said bill carrying frames to said connecting andposit onirg frame arranged to permit the oscillation of said bill carr ing frames and the longitud nal movement thereof relative to said connecting and positioning frame from a position to which the free ends of said bill carrying frames extend one beyond the other from front to rear of the series to a position in which the said free ends lie in a common plane at right angles to said bill carrying frames. and means for counterbalancing said bill carrying frames.
17. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames. a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, means connecting said bill carrying frames to said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the oscillation of said bill carrying frames and the longitudinal movement thereof relative to said connecting and positioning frame from a position in which the upper ends of said bill carrying frames extend one above the other from front to rear of the series to a position in which the said upper ends lie in a common plane at right angles to the said bill carrying frames. a casing in which said connecting and positioning frame with the series of bill carrying frames may be inserted and from which they may be withdrawn at will, and counter-balancing means for the bill carrying frames.
18. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames. a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames. means connecting said bill carr ing frames to said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the oscillation of said bill carrying frames and the longitudinal movement thereof relative to said connecting and positioning frame from a. position in which the upper ends of said bill carrying frames extend one above the other from front to rear of the series to a position in which the said upper ends lie in a common plane at right angles to the said bill carrying frames. a casing arranged to support said connecting and positioning frame and said series of bill carrying frames, and counterbalance means for the bill carrying frames connecting with the casing.
19. An account register comprising a series of bill carrying frames. a connecting and positioning frame for the bill carrying frames, means connecting said bill carrying frames to said connecting and positioning frame arranged to permit the oscillat on of said bill carving frames and the long tudinal movement thereof relative to said connecting and positioning frame from a position in which the upper ends of said bill carrying frames eXtend one above the other from front to rear of the series to a position in which the said upper ends lie in a common plane at right angles to the said bill carrying frames. a casing arranged to support said connecting and positioning frame and said series of bill carrying frames. and counterbalancing means for the bill carrying frames carried by the casing and arranged to be connected with and released from said bill carrying frames at will.

The combination of a case. a plurality of leaves pivotally connected therewith and adapted to receive or hold in oicing data thereon. springs co-acting individually with the leaves to normally hold the same in an inoperative position, and a device for placing said springs under tension or relieving them of operative tension with respect to the leaves.
21. The combination of a case, a plurality of leaves pivotally connected therewith and adapted to receive or hold invoicing data thereon, springs co-acting individually with the leaves to normally hold the same in an inoperative position, and a rocker for placing said springs under tension or relieving them of operative tension with respect to the leaves.
22. The combination of a case, a plurality of leaves pivotally connected therewith, springs embodying arms at their opposite ends, the arms on one end of said springs engaging the leaves to hold the same in an inoperative position, and a device engaging the arms at one end of said springs to place the same under tension or to reliex e the same of tension.
23. In a credit cabinet of the class described, a cabinet frame, a series of credit slip holding leaves, a support for said credit slip holding leaves, rods connected to said credit slip holding leaves, and slotted plates, the rods secured to said credit slip holding leaves extending through the slots of the slotted plates, and said slotted plates pivotally connected to one of the credit slip holding leaves, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
24. In a credit cabinet of the class described, a series of credit slip holding leaves, and triangular plates, each provided with a series of slots of different lengths, said plates pivotally attached to one of the credit slip holding leaves, the remaining leaves of the series being pivotally and slidably connected to the slotted plates, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
An account-register having, in combination, means for supporting a plurality of bill-holder frames pivotally at their lower edges, said means including counter-balancing devices tending to raise the frames to upright position; a set: of bill-holder frames normally supported by said means but readily removable therefrom, and means for holding the counterbalancing devices out of operation while the frames are being placed upon the supporting-means.
26. An account-register having, in combination, means for supporting a plurality of bill-holder frames pivotally at their lower edges, said means including counter-balancingdevices tending to raise the frames to upright position; a set of bill-holder frames normally supported by said means but readily removabletherefrom, and means for holding the counterbalancing devices out of operation while the frames are being placed upon and removed from the supportingmeans.
27. An account-register having, in combination, means for supporting a plurality of bill-holder frames pivotally at their lower edges; a set of bill-holder frames normally supported by said means but readily removable therefrom, a plurality of counterbalancing devices adapted to engage the frames severally and tending to raise them to upright position, and manually operable means for holding the counterbalancing devices simultaneously out of operative engagement with the frames while the frames are placed upon the supporting-means.
28. In a device of the character described, a containing element, a plurality of holding elements for merchandise carried by said containing element, pivot members on said elements, and hinge members comprising slotted plates in said containing element engaging said pivot members and adapted to permit a combined rotary and sliding movement thereof, said slots having offsets at their ends into which said pivot members are adapted to enter.
29. An account-register having, in combination, a plurality of bill-holder frames provided with pivots adjacent their lower edges, and means for supporting the frames when in use; said means comprising a series of pivotal bearings arranged in an inclined plane and adapted to receive the respective pivots of the bill-holder frames, and a series of guides extending to said bearings, respectively, first upwardly and rcarwardly, and then downwardly, so as to receive the respective pivots and guide them first up wardly and then downwardly into the bearings when the frames are moved rearwardly into engagement with the supporting-means.
30. An account-register having, in combination, a plurality of bill-holder frames provided with pivots adjacent their lower edges, means for supporting the frames when in use,- said means comprising pivotal bearings for the respective frames, arranged in an inclined plane; and means for guiding the frames severally into engagement with said bearings when the frames are applied-to the supporting-means, said guiding-means beingadapted to move the edges of the frames away from each other as theframes are introduced thereto.
