Specification of letters Patent. Patented Jan, 8 1918,
Applicatton filed November 14, 191 6. Seria1.No. 131,320.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUKE D. OBnmn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkele in the county of Alameda andState of Cali ornia, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Garment Stretchers, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to garment stretch- GI'S.
The object of the invention is to provide a garment stretcher especially adapted for use in connection with trousers and provided with means for securely clamping the trousers at or approximately near each end for the purpose of preserving their neat appearance.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is adjustable to the trousers in order that it may be applied to trousers of various lengths.
A further object of the invention is to construct the device in a simple and cheap manner in order to reduce the cost of manufacture and to prevent it from getting out of order.
lVith the above objects in View the invention consists of the following novel combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in the following description, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in use upon a pair of trousers;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the bars prior to their final adjustment;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through one of the clamping members, illustrating the trousers in position;
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of one section of one of the clamping members;
Fig. 5 is a similar View of the opposite section; and
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of one of the adjusting rods removed from connection with the clamping member.
Referrin more specifically to the drawings, like ciiaracters of reference denote corresponding parts. In the practical form of the invention the same consists of a pair of clamping members adapted to be secured to the trousers at or approximately near each end as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. These clamping members comprise a pair of opposed sections 1 and 2, and as both the upper and lower members are identical in construction the description of onewill sutfice forboth. The only difi'er encebetween the upper and lower members is in their length. The members 1 and 2 are eachforrhedwith registering depressions 3 intermediate their ends, for the purpose of rece ving therein the seam of the trousers and they may be providedwith a lining of suitable material. 3. At each end of the member 1 there is secured a hinge 4 one leaf aof ,thehinge being provided with a plurality of adjustment, slots 6 the purpose of which will be presently apparent. The opposite section 2; has secured thereto a spring locking element 7 This spring locking element is fastened to the section 2 by means of the screws 8, and is formed at its ends with downwardly and upwardly bent portions 9 and 10 respectively for engagement with the slots 6 of the hinges 1. It will thus be seen that the clamping members are so constructed as to accommodate one or more pairsof trousers at the same time.
Each of the clamping members is formed along the edge of the section 2 with sockets 11 for the reception of the rongs 12 formed upon the bifurcated ends of the removable adjusting rods 13 and 14. These adjusting rods are each formed of a single piece of wire bent and twisted as shown, and separated at one end in order to form a bifurcated portion which terminates in the prongs 12. If desired the bifurcated ends may be reinforced with an additional piece of wire. The rod 13 is formed along its twisted portion with bumps or projections 15, the said projections being designed to engage a ring 16 secured to the outer end of the rod 14:, and when in such engagement will hold the members 1 spaced apart. Another rin 17 has a sliding engagement with the 1'0 14 and when the rods 13 and 14 are in position this ring is passed over the free end of the rod 13 to hold it in proper alinement.
The section. 1 of the clamping member may be provided with a suitable hook 18 by means of which the garment may be hung in a wardrobe or closet.
In applying the stretcher to a pair of trousers it is only necessary to adjust the clamping members in their proper position near each end of the trousers, and to insert the prongs 12 of the rods 13 and 14 into the sockets 11 of the sections 2. the ring 16 being slipped over the rod 13. The ring 16 is slipped over the projection 15 to properly space the clamping members apart and the rods and Mare brought into alinement and hooked in their position by sliding the ring 17 over the free ends of therod 131 The trousers are thus securely held in positionto preserve their neat appearance.
Having described the invention, What is claimed 1s; p I
1. A garment stretcher comprising a p'air' of adj ustably spaced clamping members, each of said members comprising a pair of opposed sections, slotted hinged members secured to each end of one of the opposed sections, said hinged members beingprovided with a plurality of spaced adjustment slots and a spring locking element secured to the other section'intermediate its ends for en'- 'agement With the slots of the hinged memers.
'2. A garment stretchercolnp rising adjustably spaced clamping members,- each of said members comprising a pair of opposed sec tions slotted hinged members secured to each end of one of said opposed sections, a spring locking element carried by the other section and hooks carried by each end of said element for 'engagementwith the slotted hinged member 3. A garment stretcher comprising a pair of adjustably spaced clamping members, one of said members being provided at each end with a liin'ged'locking plate having a plurality of transversely disposed. slots therein, the other clamping member being adapted to lie'within'th'e hinged locking plates of the first mentioned member, a resilient locking element secured to thelast' mentioned clamping member upon the-face thereof opposite the face opposedtothe other clamping member and means located at each end of the resilient locking element for engagement with the hinged locking plates, \".'l'l6l(5l)"tl1( clamping members may be adjustably secured together.
in testimony whereof I aitix my signature.
