K Be it known that We, ALICE N. HUNT and FLORA lV. A'DERSON. citizens of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia.y haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleeping and Lounging Accoutrements, of which the folloiving is a specification.

,This invention relates to the class of camp beds or camp-sleeping facilities, especially for soldiers, and pertains particularly to a foldahle contrivance commonly known as sleeping bags.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a"soldier"s sleeping and lounging accoutrement of such novel and peculiar construction and combination of parts as will afford, in one article. a pair of' inner and outer Wraps of different thickness and Weight, and a bed differing in thickness and Weight from that of the wraps.

A lfurther object of the invention is to provide an accoutrement especially adapted for the comfort ,of camping soldiers While resting or sleeping, which comprises a bed portion, an outerl wrap portion of less thickness and `Weight than the bed portion, and an inner Wrap portion of less thickness and Weight than the bed and the outer Wrap portions. and to furnish the bed portion with a casing or bag adapted for personal occupancy in lieu of pajamas or nightgowns;

A still further object of the invention is to provide a rolling or folding sleeping and lounging accoutrement, comprising an outer or exposed facing, suchas khaki, canvas, duck or the like, an inner facing attached to the outer facing having a portion thereof folded upon itself, and a Wadding between said linine and forming a hed portion of douhle thickness and extending in opposite directions in single thickness for Wrap portions. i Y i Various other objects. advantages and improved results are attainable-in the practical production and application of the invention, as will he hereinafter explained.

In such accoutrements as pertain to this invention it has been found inost'desirable that provision be made therein for various uses thereof, as for sleeping, and lounging or resting purposes,- and for these purposes and for the purpose of affording various thicknesses in the Wrapping portions from that of the bed portion, according to the various uses of the accoutrement, it has special construction and arrangement of parts and material resulting in a complete article especially adapted for the use of soldiers.

ln carrying out our invention We attach, as at la, one edge of such materiah'as gauze or cheese cloth 1, to one edge of suclrlight material as sateen or percaline 2, and spread upon the ga uze 1 such material as wool batting comprising tivo sheets 3 and il and hav ing a portion of one sheet overlap a portion of the other sheet so as to form a douhle thickness or hed portion 5L The material 2 is folded and attached at 6 and is extended over the sheets 3 and 4 to the other or opposite edge of the gauze 1,`\vhere this edge of the latter and the adjacent edge of the material 2 are attached at Ga, and the material 2 is stitched at 7 to one edge of an outer material, such as khaki cloth 8. The other or opposite edge of the cloth 8 and the other gauze-attached edge of the material 2 are stitched together, as at 9; the tuftings 10 connecting the Wool with the gauze and the tuftings l1 extending through the cover 15 being made prior to said stitchings and prior to the head and foot stitchings 12 an 13 respectively which attach the inner facing material 2 and the outer cloth 8. '1` he stitching 9 and a like opposite stitching 1l confine the central or bed portion and the side portions of the sheets 3 and l, to the respective members 5, 15, and 16. This construction and arrangement of said materials constitute three essential features in a sleeping and lounging accoutrement; i. e., a central bed portion or member, a light inner wrap or cover 15, and a heavier or thicker outer wrap or cover 16.

A plurality of clamping socket members 17 are secured to the bed portion adjacent to the stitching 14 for the socket head members 18 which are secured to the inner face of the wrap 15 along the outer edge thereof. For closing the foot end of the accoutrement similar sockets 1.9 are secured along the foot end of the bed portion for socket heads 2O secured to the foot end of the inner wrap 15.. and a socket 21 is secured adjacent to the edge of the foot end of the outer wrap 16 for a socket head 22 secured to the foot end of the inner wrap 15. The head end of the bed portion is provided lwith buttons 23, and a like button 241- is secured to the inner face of the head end of the inner wrap. These buttons are not for closing the head end of the accoutrement, which has no closing fastenings, but said buttons are used for attaching ay sleeping bag 25 having a closed foot end andan open head end. The bag is provided with a loop 26 projecting from the head edge of the upper bag member for the button Q4. The head edge of the lower bag member is provided with a loop 27 for the central one of the buttons Q3, and the f head corners of the bag have a loop 2S for the other buttons Q3. The bag 25 is preferably composed of outing Hanne-l for use in lieu of pajamas or night robes, and the bag is-free except for its loop and button fas- Y teners, and may be readily attached and detached as desired or. as occasion may demand.

The inner longitudinal edge of the bed portion is provided with tapes 29 adapted' to be tied with tapes 30 secured to the opposite or outer edge of the portion 16, for closing` the accoutrement. The foot end of the outer wrap 16 is provided with tapes 31 for tying with tapes 32 secured to the outer face of the bed portion at such distance from the foot end as to permit the foot end to be rolled or folded under the bed portion. The foldingl and tying of the foot end may be readily done either before or after the accoutrement is occupied, according to the wishes of the occupant, so as to raise the foot end as at 40, and to afi-ord additional protection and comfort for the feet. The folded foot end also provides a pillow or head rest for lounging or sleeping without opening the accoutrement.

All of the tapes are of such length asto permit the accoutrement to be tied for various folded capacities, so that an occupant -may make loose and close fastenings, as desired, and

all the tape and clamp `fastenings are made after the accoutreinent 1s occupied; and the occupant `may use one or the other of the wraps, or neither of them, as desired, yet utilizing the bed portion as such either in open or folded condition ofthe accoutrement.

It will loe observed that the tuftings are not connected with the outer cloth`8, and the gauze forms the backinc for the wool filling which is attached to the gauze and to the inner facingl for the bed .and the outer wrap portions, sothat said portions are free from the outer cloth, with only the gauze intervening, but the wool for the inner wrap is tufted to and between the fold This construction and arrangement is highly essential for lightness, dilferent thicknesses of wrapsj 'and expeditionsl renova-` tion. While the primary purpose of this invention is its soldier or camping utility, it may be used for variousother purposes.

Obviously, the sleepingv bag may be readily removed for airing and washing, and the combination bed and wraps as one article may be readily spread out in flat condition or hung` up for drying or renovation, as occasion may demand.

It will be seen that the accoutremen't affords a special bed, a sleeping bag, a light wrap or inner cover, and a thicker or heavier outer wrap or cover`each of'which may be used independent of the other, according to climatic conditions, or at the will andpleasure of the user. v

Referring to the modification shown in Fig. S, additional tapes 35 areV attached to the head cndbase cloth 36 ofthe bedportion 37 so that the accoutrement may be folded lengthwise and tied for convenience inhandling. carrying, packing and transportation.

lVhile we have specied Certainmaterials as preferable `for lightness, warmth and sanitary purposes, We do not wish to be understood as confining ourselves to any particular material, nor to the size or shape of our invention, but reserve the right to use such material and to make such changes and variations in the practicalproduction of the invention as may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: j

1. A` foldable accoutrement comprising a bed member composed of wadding material of this wrap.4

2. A foldable accoutrement of the character described comprising a bed member composed of two overlapping layers of Wadding material, an inner covering, and an outer covering, an outer Wrap formed by eX tensions of the inner and the outer coverings and an extension of one of said layers, an innerl wrap formed by an extension of the inner covering` and an extension of the other layer, and means for fastening the Wraps in folded position.

ln a foldable accoutreinent of the character described, the combination With an outer facing, an inner facing, a material, as gauze, attached to the inner edge of the inner facing and extending next to and over the inner face of the outer facing, an inner facing extension folded upon itself, a pair of Wadding layers having overlapping portions for half the Width of the outer facing' and forming a bed member, each of said layers extending laterally from the bed niember and covered by said inner facing and its extension, tuftings connecting the overn lapped portions and part of the inner facing with the gauze, tuftings connecting the folded extensions together with one of the layer extensions therebetween, and means for attaching the inner facing to the inner face of the outer facing.
