Be it known that ll, hrnnnrrox F. BAL- LARI), a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of lowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Uperating- Headlights; andl do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention., such as will enable others ,dll
skilled in the art to which it appertains to inake and use the same.
My inventionv relates to improvements in headlights for use by surgeons, dentists and Opticians and is designed toprovide an adjustable electric lamp to deliver rays upon the object to be inspected or operated upon.V
An object of my invention is to provide an electric headlight which will be operated by current supplied by dry cells carried on the body of the operator.
With this and numerous other objects in view my invention resides in the novel features of construction and in thecombina-A tion and arrangement f parts as will be fully set forth in the specification and claims. 4

Reference is now had to the drawingsin' which l have shown a headband l comprising two spring metal bands v2.and 3 adjustably connected by .1 longitudinally projecting tongue 4 onone end of one of the bands and adapted for reception in a longitudinal slot 5 in the adjacent end of the other band 3 and held in adjusted position by a clamp 6. The extreme end of the rearA section 2 of the headband is provided with lateral extensions 7 for engagement with the back` of the head and the front section 3 is provided with extensions 8 adapted to bear against the forehead of the operator to hold the head-piece in proper position. rlhe extensions v7 and 8 have pads 9 on their inner faces to contact the head so as to more trml hold the device in position. Secured to the front section 3 of the headband are upper and lower flat metal plates l0 and l1 bent substantially l...shaped and having their longer forwardly projecting arms secured together by rivets or the like and oppositely directed attaching feet l2 and 13 riveted or otherwise secured to said front section, said feet being seated in recesses in said section'so that the outer faces of the feet and head section will be in the same plane.
The outer portions of the upper and lower t.shaped plates l0 and ll are bent upwardly and downwardly respectively at acute angles as shown in F ig. l and then directed horizontallyin parallel spaced relation to form clamping plates or jaws la and l5 which are held together by an adjusting bolt 2O which extends through vertically alined apertures in said clamping plates or jaws it and l5 near the juncture of the horizontal and angular portions. rThe two pairs of clamping plates or j aws arev connected by allink 2l on each end of which is a head or ball 22 to be clamped between the adjacent inner faces of the jaws and received in the apertures which form seats therefor and are positioned near the extreme ends of said jaws as hereinbefore stated.
The currentv used by the lamp is obtained from dry cells carried in a case 23 formed from any suitable fleXible material. The case comprises an elongated pocket open at each end and on one side and having Haps 24 at each end adapted to be folded inwardly over the outer ends of the cel-ls which are wired together in the usual manner.
This case 23 has upper and lower longitudinal flaps 25 and 26 adapted to cover the cell and have their adjacent edges detachably fastened together by any suitable means, the whole case being adapted to be positioned on the back of the operator and held in said position on a belt or Suspenders 29 as shown.
For the purpose of conducting current from the cells to the lamp an electric lamp cord 27 is provided and is connected to the cells and then extended through the guides 9 on the headband l, and then through a guide 9 which is mounted on the upper plate or jaw 14 of a clamp which projects from the headband after which said cord is passed through an opening in the side of the casing 16 of the lamp. For the purpose of breaking the circuit a pair of plugs and sockets 28 are placcd therein at a point near the case 23.
In use the case containing the cells is attached to the body by means of the belt or Suspenders and then the headband is adjusted to the size of the operators head after which itis positioned on the head with the extensions 7 contacting the back thereof and the extensionsv 8 contacting theJ forehead. The plugs and sockets are connected to close the circuit whereupon the electric lamp may be used to deliver rays of light upon the object to be inspected or operated upon. From the connection between the headband and the lamp casing it is apparent that said lamp may be adjusted to throw light rays in any desired direction;
From the foregoing description and op.- eration of my improved operating headlight the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readrearwardly extending clamping plates or jaws on its casing, a link between the pairs of jaws, said link having a ball on each end to be received and held in seats formed in the adjacent inner faces of each pair of clamping plates or jaws.
2. In a device of they class described, a headband, a pair of forwardly projecting clamping plates or jaws on said headband, a lamp, a pair of rearwardly extending clamping plates or jaws on the casing of said lamp, each pair of clamping plates or jaws having alined apertures in their adjacent jaws to form seats, a link between the pairs of clamping plates or jaws, said link having a ball on each end to be received and held in said seats.
3. The combination of 'a headband, la lamp casing, a link having a ball at each end, a pair of 'resilient clamping jaws rigidly secured to the lamp casing at one end and having at their o posite ends circular openings of a smaller size than the diameter of one of said balls to receive the same, means arranged between the ends of said arms for drawing their apertured ends into engagement with said ball, a pair of resilient plates secured together adjacent one end and having said ends fastened to said headband, the opposite ends of said plate being spaced apart and formed with circular openings of less diameter than the other ball on said link, and means for drawing saidspaced portions of the last mentioned plates together to clamp them on the ball.
