The rear end of the lever -20- is slidable endwise in the opening -22- and between the aws 21- to compensate for its changing positionras its pivot 23'- is moved rectilinearly, the movement of said lever being limited by engagement with the inner' end faces as -26- of the posts -9- and -l\')- as shown in Figure 4.

The lower and upper faces of the inner ends of the jaws are beveled at w30-- to form knife edges in horizontal alinenient with each other 'for entrance between opposite sides of the closed loop to spread the same when the jaws are brought together and the loop is placed in the position shown in Figure 2 or for closing the opposite sides of the open loops when placed in the position shown in Figure 4.

lt will be observed that the inner ends of the jaws -17-- and 1S- are tapered rather abruptly,vthe object of which. is tor cause aquick spreadingof the closed loops and to prevent injury to the opposite sides of theloops when the jaws are used to close the loop.

- Operation.

When it is desired to open a-closed loop the rest 2Q- will be 'adjustedso that when the loop is placed edgewise thereon as shown in Figure 2 the meeting edges of opposite sides of the loop will be registered'with the inner tapered ends of the jaws -17- and .-l8-'- so that when the jaws are brought vtogether the taperedends thereof will enter between the opposite sides oi.z the loop and quickly spread the same On the other'1 hand, when it is desired to close an open loop the latter will be placed upon the rest -29- between the adjacent.

These operations are particularly simple and expeditious and enable the user to remove and replace the cross chains without material loss of time thereby greatly reducing the expense of these repairs, and materially increasing the output for any given period oi time without excessive labor on the part of the operator.

What I claim is LA device for opening and closing wire loops and the like comprising a base section havingrtransverse openings in longitudinally spaced relation and lengthwise guide openings some distance above the bottoms of the transverse openings, a jaw mounted in Ione of the guide openings, and provided with a tapered inner end projecting into the adjacent Ltransverse opening, an additional jaw `slidable endwise inthe other guide opening and provi-ded with an inner tapered y end movable towardfand `:trom the rstnamed jaw, and means extending into the other transverse opening for reciprocating the second-named jaw.` v
