IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-FLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,280, dated April 2, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW FREEMAN, of Ogden, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gang or Sulky Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved gang or sulky plow, and Fig. 2 a view thereof partly in side View and partly in section.

This invention has reference to an improved gang or sulky plow, and it consists of the combination and arrangement of some of the parts of which itis constituted, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

To enable others to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.

In the accompanying drawing, A refers to a cross-beam or support, the pendent ends of which are bent outward horizontally so as to support the short axles B B, secured to said beam by means of bolts or otherwise, and having upon their reduced ends the wheels U 0. Upon the cross-beam A is mounted and secured the seat- D for the driver, and to its inner sides are bolted or otherwise fastened, ator near their rear ends, horizontal bars E E, which are connected together at their front ends by means of a metallic bar, 6, forming a support for the tongue F. 0 refers to another metallic bar, to the center of whichis fastened the rear end of the tongue F, its ends being secured to the bars E E, and is for the purpose of holding the tongueFin astraight and horizontal position. The double-tree G, to which the Whittle-trees g g are attached, is secured to the tongue F by means of the kingbolt G, which also holds the said tongue upon the bar 0. H refers to a semicircular inetallic strip or plate, which is fastened at its ends to the lower side of the front ends of the bars E E, and is for the purpose of retaining the double-tree G in a horizontal plane when the same is revolved or turned about in order to prevent it from coming in contact with the tongue F. I I refer to the plows, which are of ordinary construction and attached by means of standards to the rear ends of the long and short beams 1 1 These beams are connected together by the transverse pieces or bars M i refers to a staple or loop, of the form plainly shown in Fig. 2, which is bolted to the forward connecting'bar t of the beams I P. J is a link, which connects the looped end i of the plow-beams I I with the pin or king-bolt G, and which is the onlyvmeans by which the said beams are connected to the machine. It will be seen that by so attaching the beams all pressure is removed from off the axles and wheels thereof arising from the attaching or hinging of the same to the center or axle of the machine, the method of securing them in place heretofore practiced. K K are elongated staples or loops, fastened to the upper sides of the plow-beams l 1 and receiving a right-angular bar or rod fastened to the lower end of the hand lever L, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. When the lever L, which is pivoted to an upright fastened to one of the bars E, is elevated or depressed, the plows and their beams will be also elevated or lowered, causing the former to be thrown up outof the way or brought in contact with the ground. M refers to one of two metallic pendents or guides secured to the inner sides of the outer or rear ends of the bars E E, and embracing the plow-beams I I so as to retain them in a straight line with the line of draft.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a gang or sulky-plow, of the lever L, beams I I link J, bolt G, the whittletrees, bar H, the tongue, brace e, beams E E, guides M M, and staples or loops K K, all substantially as shown and described.
