of Indiana, have useful Improvements in Domestic Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in domestic appliances and particularly to combined step-ladders and ironing boards, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby the two articles may be combined into one without interfering with the usual functions of either.
A further object is to provide such articles in forms Which are cheap to construct, durable and strong and which occupy but relatively small space when in a folded position.
A further object is to provide means whereby the ladder element may be combined with the board in a specially firm and novel manner.
`hese and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an article made in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view showing the device extended so as to be used as a ladder.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing a modified form of connecting means between the ladder and board, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4-4 of F ig. 3.
In the drawings, the numeral 10 distinguishes the board, the same being of the shape and size commonly employed for pressing articles of clothing by tailors and laundries, the board having hingedly attached near its wider or base end, by means of the pin 11, a pair of spaced legs 12, Which, when in an extended position, as shown in Fig. 1, acts as a support for the board, while approximately at the same distance from the opposite end of the board, engaged by a pin 14, is a flat plate element 15 having an cnlarged lower end 1G, adapted to act as another support When the board is in an fasnhstantially parallel passing through the legs 12,
.-eaten,dedfg fn0stien-, bathitheseasnppertsbeing \nselfyfeldable alengsiclesthelmver sanace of the board when not in use.
..'lhe-.larldenelementtisimadeanf: a; paintof bars 18, Connected by a plurality of transversely disposed cross bars 19, rigidly engaged at their ends, and forming the rungs of the ladder when used as such, the upper end of the bars 18 being attached by a pin 20 to the lower side of the board, as can best be seen in Fig. 2.
`ormed through the ladder bars 18, are
holes 22 adapted to receive rods 23 made with operating heads 24, similar openings 25 by means of which the rods 23 are caused to engage the legs 12 With the ladder bars 18, in either of the two positions shown.
The plate support 15 is held closely against one of the steps 19 by means of the upper pin when the ladder is in an extended position, thereby forming a rlgid structure in whichever position the parts may be, and it will be observed that by removing the pins, the parts may be closely folded against the back of the board so as to occupy relatively small space.
In the adaptation shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the board 10 is recessed transversely near its upper end, the undercut opening 30 having engaged therein a pair of oppositely disposed sliding blocks, respectively 31 and 32, having transverse curved recesses 33 and 34, adapted to receive a semi-cylindrical head 35, which is jointed by a stem 36, to a plate 37, in turn attached to the top of the ladder bars 18.
Arranged on the top of the board 10 are rotatably mounted a pair of right and left hand screws 40, provided with operating heads 41, and Secured in the board by means of the plate 2, the screws being operatively engaged with the sliding blocks 31 and 32, so that pressure may be brought to bear between them, clamping the head 35 rigidly therebetween, or by operating the screws in the opposite direction, the ladder element may be entirely removed from the board in an easy and expeditious manner so that it may be used by itself if desired, or without in any way interfering with the use of the ironing board, which may then be folded even more compactly than if it were permanently attached as indicated in Figs. 1 and. 2.
