OWEN H. JONES, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO FLORENCE M. POMEROY, F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
BALL-coax.
To all whom it may concern.' v y Be it known that I, OWEN H.Y JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and Stato of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Ball-Cock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to devices lfor supplying water to tanks used for various purposes and especially those used in connection with water-closets and an object of my invention among others is to provide a ball cock that shall be simple in construction, etlicient in operation and especially one that shall be free from objectionable leaking.
One form of ball cock embodying my invention and in the construction and use 0f which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which v lfigurerl is a topplan view of a ball cock embodying .my invention. v
Fig. :2 is a view in side elevation of my improved ball cock with parts broken away in central section-to illustrate construction.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the inlet section of my iinproved ball cock', this being the section to which a source of supply as an inlet pipe is attached in any suitable manner, and the numeral G indicates the outlet section of the ball cock, that is, the section-containing the chamber and from which the outlet 7 extends. A valve seat S of any suitable form and construction is ysecured to the section 5 ot' the ball cock, this seat being located within the chamber 9 within the outlet section ot said cock. A valve plunger 10 is mounted for reciprocating movement ina neck 11 constituting a part of the section 6, a valve 12 being secured to the lower end of the plunger in position to engage the valve seat 8. lars 13 project from the end of the neck 1l and a swinging block 1l is pivotally mounted between said ears, a float rod 15 being secured to said block as by means of a thumb screw 1G. This float rod preferably extends into a hole in the block` this hole being located between the pivot 26 support- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 8, 1918.

ing the block and the pivot 4 connecting the block and link.
v This block 14 has a groove 17 in its under side, the bottom of this groove comprising ashoulder against which a link 18 abuts to limit both lthe opening and closing move.- ments of the valve. .Said link is pivotally attached to said block and to the plunger 10 and extends within a groove in the plunger (as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings) and into the groove 17. This link has a beveled or curved part 19 to permit swinging movement of the link in the opening and closing movements of the valve, the extremity 20 of the link at one end of the beveled part constituting a closing stop. The edge of the link at or near the termination of the curved partY at the other end thereof constitutes with the edge 21 of the groove 17 an opening stop.
f The closing stop 20 is not effective when a new valve 1:2 is in place, but when said valve becomes worn to a certain extent then the closing stop 20 comes into play to determine the position of the block 1l in the closing movement of the valve and thus prevents the pivot 4 from passing the dead center and thus allowing the float rod 15 with its float to rise, owing to its buoyancy, sufficiently to again open the valve after it has been closed in therising movement of said float. The stop formed by the curved part of the link near its lower end striking the bottom of the slot 17 determines the position of. the valve when it is open.
' In order to prevent the passage of liquid along the plunger 10 and out at the end of the neck 11 I provide a relief groove 22 preferably of annular form in the plunger 10. This groove intercepts any liquid that would have a tendency, from the pressure or other- Wise, to flow along the sides of the plunger out of the chamber 9, and I also provide means for retaining any liquid that may thus How along the sides of the plunger Within the body of the valve and for compelling such liquid to flow through the outlet 7. This I accomplish by providing a diaphragm 23 extending partly across the chamber within the section 6 of the valve,
this diaphragm forming the upper part of the chamber 9 and also forming a relief chamber 24 located Within the val-ve body.V
This chamber 2A4 opens bya' 'mgutli '2 5-into the chamber 9 and from thence any liquid in the. relief Chamber. .will How. threueh the l outlet 7. f In theA fo'rin'ofthedeyice as Shown herein the relief groove 221s` "normali-y' closed by the Wall separating the reliei'and outlet chambers.
