To an wlamiamay concave:
Be it kno'wnbthat weierra Kmaend Fommsr- J.- Coecn, beth'o'f :Rochester', in the county of Monroe and State of New "York, have' invented certain new and use-r111 Imp rovem'ents irt Treaetle' Mechanism; and We do hereby declare the fol'low'in to lie -a full, clear, and exact description otihe same, ref erence being had to the-accom anyin draw ings, forming a part of this sacrifice engand to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our invention relatesgto treadle mechanisms of the type generally employed in conjunction with various types of apparatus designed for foot control, s uch'as ironing machines, presses'anH- the lilie y'an'cllit has for its particular perms-teasers a' simplified construction that permits a single tftdldto" eyed are acacia capacity,- to effect operation of the machine and tore-' store the parts after the operation to their normal position. A further object of the invention is to lessen the cost of construction by eliminating one treadle from the usual double treadle arrangement, in which one treadle is employed for operating and a sec ond treadle for releasing or restoring the parts. A further advantage of the improvement is found in the reduction of labor which it causes, since the operator does not need to change the position of the foot which is used to control the treadle, as the latter is operated from different positions and in varying relations, in order to effect the desired movements of the other parts of the mechanism. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel teatures being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing machine with the invention applied, and showing the position of the parts when the machine is in. its operating position;
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the treadle mechanism, showing the position of the operating lever and other parts after the initial releasing movement of the controlling member or treadle; u
Fig. 3 is a similar view after the parts are completely restored to normal position;

The scope of the "invention is net-wh te limited in any sense to the particular application or" forrn' of mechanism that isfset forth in the present case, asi t 'majti be otherwrse appliedin connection with an meehw nism involving operating leverarranged for movement in opposite directions and delineated with acontrolling member'- for-er fe'ctingits opposite movements. "In tlie arr-angemenit shown, which is" illustrative eta referredconstruction, we employ a base 1 and a vertical f-rame 2 cn' whi'ch is mounted} a stationary ironingand pr'e'ssing member or chest 3 adapted to be heated by a suitable ame medium that is -s=ap u-ied-- tnioagawne 'pip e's i. Arranged for cooperation with the heated member 3 is a vertically movable bed that is carried upon a movable frame which is connected for operation to a toggle joint consisting of links 5 and 6, the latter forming part of an operating lever 7 which is pivotally mounted on a post 8 supported in the base 1.
The operating lever 7 has pivoted at its outer end a controlling member or treadle 10 which is provided with a downwardly projecting lug 11 at a point near its connection with the lever 7, and arranged to engage the base fiange 12 and constitute a fulcrum in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The operating lever 7 carries an overhanging portion 13 which engages an extension 14 formed on the controlling member in the manner shown in Fig. 3 to form a stop, while 15 is an upstanding portion or toe uard at the front end of the treadle 10. he link 6 preferably carries a spring 16 which acts as a butter and en ages the abutment 17 to prevent excessive s ock, as the parts are returned to thelr normal position, shown in Fig 3.
he operation of the device may be de scribed briefly as follows: With the parts in the position illustrated in Fi 3, in order to effect operation of the mac ine the outer end of the controlling member 10 is engaged and depressed, and by reason of the engagement of the extension 14 with the portion 13, the operating lever is caused to move downwardly, and the controlling member moves bodily with it. The lever swin s about its axis and st'raightens the togg e joint to bring the ironing members into ironmg relation. The parts are then in the positlon shown in Fig. 1. To release the mechanism and restore the parts to normal position, the inner end of the controlling member 10 is depressed, rocking the treadle on the projection 11 as a fulcrum and thereby causing the outer end of the operating lever to move slightly in an upward direction in the manner showninF-ig. 2, until the toggle joint is broken. The weight of the parts is then sufiicient to complete the restoring operation, moving the operating lever upwardly until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 3, after which the parts are ready for a second operation. It will be seen that the controlling member is thus moved about separate or independent fulcrums, afiorded by pivotal axis 8 and projection 11, to elfect opposite movements of the lever, and movement of the treadl'e about axis 8 is, in the present instance, caused by the overhanging ortion 13 arranged on the opposite-.side of ever 7 from projection 11, and engaging-extension 14 to cause .the controlling. member to move bodily with the lever.
We claim as our invention:
1. The combination with an operating lever, of a controlling member pivoted to the operating lever, a stop on the lever which limits the relative movement of the controlling member in one direction, and a projection on the controlling member which serves as a fulcrum when it is moved in the opposite direction relatively to the lever.
2. The combination with an operating lever, of a controlling member pivoted thereon, and independent fulcrums about which the controlling member is operable in order JOHN KANE. FORREST J. COUCH.
