Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. VVAREAM, citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Garment-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to presses and particularly to that type of such devices utilized for pressing outer garments.
Heretofore presses of this type, which include the support or buck'and an upper press head, have been arranged so that the press head has only av limited upward swinging movement thus allowing very limited exposure of the garment as it is arranged upon the buck. In these presses heretofore employed the mechanism for moving and controlling the head, together with the treadle mechanism, has been ofsuch a type that it required great eflort on the part of the operator to manipulate the press head and further the movement and position of the treadle itself produced an unnatural awkward position of the foot in manipulating the treadle. Furthermore in these prior devices the construction did not lend itself to the production of sufficient pressure on the garment to treat many various types of garments.
lVith the above difficulties in view the present invention is designed in a manner such that the press head will have a wide opening movement with respect to the buck so as to leave it exposed for manipulation of the garment thereon and the treadle mechanism and operating devices for the head are arranged so that the treadle is normally and throughout its movement maintained in a convenient position for the operator and the head is swung by a positive movement toward and from the buck. The mechanism is also susceptible of producing great pressure upon the garment. I
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following drawings, description and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the press in open position and is in part a section taken upon a vertical line through the press from front to rear. the buck and presser head being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is a similar view with transverse shaft 15.

In the arrangement shown in the drawings 1 and 2 represent the side frame members which are connected by suitable rods 3 and 4 at the bottom and by an intermediate rod 5 located part way up on the framemembers 1 and 2. At the upper ends of these frame members 1 and 2 are suitable flanges 6 which receive the buck, as will appear. These frame membersare also connected at the rear of the machine by a transverse strut or bracket 7 provided with a.
bumper 8 of rubber or other elastic material for a purpose to be described.
Secured to the flanges 6 is a buck supporting base 9 upon which is mounted the lower buck structure 10, the upper face of which is provided with the usual padding 11.
Pivotally mounted upon the bar 3 intermediate-the side frame members 1 and 2 is a press head supporting arm comprising two side members 12 connected by transverse web portions 13 and 14 .and at the top-by the This member. is substantially of the configuration shown in Fig. 3. The shaft 15 is secured in place in the press head supporting member and'supports a press head lever 16 comprising side lever portions Webbed together and forming spaced hubs 17 at the lower end connected to lever mechanism in a manner which will be described later. The upper and forward end of this lever 16 is provided with flanges 18 to which the press head 19 is secured by suitable bolts 20 or in any other preferred manner. A suitable handle 21 is connected to the member 16 and projects beyond the front edge of the press head. .The side armsof this press head lever 16 are provided with hooks 22 which receive the ends of springs 23 in turn connected to hooks 24 secured to the frame members 1 and 2.
Mounted upon the bar 3 at the rear of the machine is a link 25 which is pivotally con-' nected at its forward end to a pedal bracket 26 having a downwardly extending portion 27 provided with a horizontally disposed forwardly extending treadle 28. This treadle bracket has an upwardly extending arm 29 pivotally connected to an upper link structure having side members 30 in turn pivotally connected to a shaft 31 arranged between the side arms of the press head supporting member. Intermediate the ends of the upper link 30 and preferably near its connection with the arm 29 is connected a bell crank lever 32 which is rotatably mounted upon the bar 5. The lower arm of this lever is pivotally connected to a clevis 33 which has a hollow shank 34 receiving loosely a 'rod 35 provided with a suitable thrust nut 36 and check nut 37 within the jaws of the clevis. The rod 35 receives a spring 38 which bears against the clevis on the one hand and against a hand wheel 39 keyed to the rod. Beyond the hand wheel the rod 35 is threaded as at 40 and engages a T shaped connection 41 which is mounted upon a shaft 42 arranged in the hubs 17 at the lower end of the press head lever. The lower link 25 is provided with an eye 43 connected to a spring 44 in turn connected to an eye 45 secured to the frame. In order to hold the hand wheel in any adjusted position the wheel is provided with lugs forming notches 46 which receive a dog 47 pivotally supported in cars 48 forming a part of the T shaped connection 41.
Mounted upon the bar 4 at the forward part of the frame is release mechanism comprising a treadle member 49 pivoted upon the bar and normally held elevated by a spring 50 arranged between it and a lug 51 on the frame. A suitable stop 52 is provided at the rear of the bar 4 and it engages another stop 53 fixed against lmovement. This release treadle 49 is provided with an upstanding arm 54 having an overhanging portion 55 adapted to engage a pin 56, shown in Fig. 7, arranged on the side of the treadle bracket. j v
The bar 4 also has clamped upon it a suitable bumper 57 adapted to be engaged by an adjustable stop bolt 58 arranged in the main treadle bracket and held in any adjusted position by a nut 59.
Assuming that the' press is open as shown in Fig. 1 and that it is to be closed by the operator, the handle 21 is engaged and the operators foot is placed upon the treadle. The head then springs forward by reason of the clockwise movement of the bell crank lever 32 about the bar 5 and the final movement causes a straightening of the toggle formed by one arm of the bell crank lever and the pressure adjusting link mechanism connecting this arm with the press head lever, as shown in Fig. 2. The continued further downward movement of the treadle causes overhanging portion 55 of the release treadle mechanism to engage above the pin 56 and locks the press closed. This closing movement is against the tension of springs 23 and the spring 44 with the result that when the release treadle is operated these springs produce a free opening movement of the press and require a minimum-amount of effort on the part of the operator.
The pressure exerted on the garment may be adjusted in an obvious manner by manipulation of the hand wheel 39.
It will also be noticed that the operating mechanism connected to the treadle 28 is so constructed and arranged that said operating treadle is maintained in substantially horizontal position throughout its range of movement, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. The pressing member is therefore easier to operate because there is no tilting movement of the treadle such as ordinarily interferes with efiicient application of foot pressure thereto.
Having described my invention,I claim 1. In a press, a frame, a buck mounted thereon, a'swinging presser head support, a presser head carried thereby, a horizontally disposed treadle, and parallel link mechanism between said treadle and said swinging support for manipulating the presser head and maintaining said treadle in a substantially horizontal position throughout its movement.
2. In a press, a frame. a buck, a swinging presser head support pivoted in the frame, a presser head lever mounted in said support, a presser head carried thereby, and operating mechanism connected to said lever and to said support and comprising a treadle member, suit-able links between the treadle member and the presser head support to form a parallel motion mechanism, suitable connections between a part of said parallel motion mechanism and the frame to produce swinging motion of the presser head support, and toggle connections between an operating part of said parallel motion mechanism and the presser head lever.

a presser head carried thereby, and operating mechanism connected to said lever and to said support and comprising a treadle member, suitable links between the treadle member and the presser head support to form a parallel motion mechanism, a bell crank lever pivoted in the frame and havingan arm pivotally connected to said parallel motion mechanism to produce a swinging movement of the presser head support, and another arm connected by a toggle link with the presser head lever.
4. In a press, aframe, a buck, a swinging presser head support mounted in the frame, a presser head lever pivotally mounted in said resser head su ort a resser head porting member, another? link connecting said treadle member with said swinging arm at a point remote from its pivotal point, a bell crank lever pivoted in the frame and having an arm pivotally connected to said other link, and a toggle link connecting the last mentioned arm of the bell crank lever with the lower end of the presser head lever.
5. A pressing machine, comprising cooperating pressing members, a support mounted to be bodily movable, one of said pressing members being movable on said support, an operating member, and means actuated thereby for both moving said support bodily and moving said movable pressing member on said support to bring said pressing members into pressing relation.
6. A pressing machine, comprising eooperating pressing members, a swinging support, one of said pressing members being movabl relative to said support, an operating member, and means actuated thereby and operatively connected to both said support and pressing members for both swinging said support and producing movement of said movable pressing member relative to said support to bring said press ng members into pressing relation.
