IMPROVEMENT IN KNAPSACK ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,188, dated April 2, 187 2.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES S. For, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knapsack Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a View of the inner face of a knapsack having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the application thereof. Fig. 3 is atop View thereof.

This invention consists in uniting the straps which pass from the knapsack over the shoulders of the wearer by means of a short stretcher, which is likewise attached to a central strap which passes centrally over theblanket or roll at the top of the sack, so that the stretcher lies just above or on the nape of the neck and adjacent sides, conforming to the shape thereof and bringing the knapsack up and against the nape, whereby the weight is concentrated at a point where it is most endurable, and the sack may be easily, comfortably, and ably carried.

Referring to the drawing, A represents a knapsack; and B, the blanket or roll at the top thereof, both of which may be of ordinary form and construction. 0 represents the shoulder-straps; D, the breast-straps; and E F, the slings. The shoulder-straps G are secured centrally to the upper part of the inner face of the knapsack, and radiate therefrom so as to sit properly and easily on the shoulders and bring the weight of the sack nearer to the neck. In

order to keep the sack up and against the neck, just above or on the nape thereof, I connect the sh oulderstraps O by a stretcher, G, which consists of a flat piece of suitably strong and flexible material arranged transversely, and havin g its ends united to said shoulder-straps at or about the points where these straps cross the stretcher above the ends where they are secured to the knapsack. A loop or other means of fastening, H, is formed in the central portion of the stretcher, and through said fastening is passed, or to it is secured, the middle strap or fastening J of the roll B. This provision overcomes the tendency of the knapsack to fall back, and is entirely efi'ective for keeping the same up and against the neck. WVhile the stretcher is secured to the roll-strap its ends are free to yield, and thus it conforms to the shape of the neck at the bearing-points. It lies in place without cutting, straining, or harshness, and may be said to gather the shoulder straps, and thereby prevent them from slipping outward or toward the outer ends of the shoulders. The weight of the knapsack will be concentrated above or on the nape of the neck and the adjacent sides of the latter, and is thus transferred from the outer portions of the shoulders to the portions of the neck where it is most endurable, and thereby permits the sack to be worn ably and conveniently, and by means strong and simple.

I am aware that shoulder-straps have been united to the blanket or roll-straps, and that a strap has been passed around the neck and over the shoulders, and toit are connected the roll-straps. Such devices I disclaim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The transverse stretcher G, having its ends united to the two ordinary shoulder-straps G, in combination with a strap, J, passing centrally over the roll B, substantially as de scribed, for the purpose specified.
