DANIEL JAMES WATTS, OF IRON RIVER, MICHIGAN.
POWDER-PUNCH AND FUSE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
Application filed J u1y 16, 1917. Serial No. 180,827.
. To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL J. WA'rrs, a subject of Great Britain, residing at Iron River, in the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in" Powder-Punches and Fuse-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
M invention relates to improvements in com ined powder punch and blasting-fuse holders.
The object of my invention is to provide a powder punch which in combination with a U tube will form a holder for fuses used in blasting. The U tube will also cover the punch and protect it.
My device is of especial use, when in blasting it becomes necessary to hold a number of fuses together in one place. It also holds these fuses in such a positive manner that they can not shake loose.
The manner of fastening is simple, ouick and effective. The clamping grip of the tubing is increased as the short end of the powder punch is pressed into the opening of the tu c. It will be noted that the punch consists of two arms, one long and one short which are connected by a curved portion forming a handle. The arms are in the same plane but not parallel, the arms diverging as they leave the handle. This spreading of the arms forms a spring, shown later, exerts a leverage when inserted in the tubing. Thetubing is cut and split so that when bent upon itself to form a U the bends will be square. The advantage in this form of U is, it avoids soldering.
When it is desired to clamp one or more fuses, they are placed between the two U arms of the tubing and these U arms are ressed together until approximately paralel. The arms of the powder punch are now inserted into the hollow U arm, but to do this the handle of the powder punch must be held in such a manner that the arms may be ressed into a parallel position in order that they shall enter the parallel arms of the U tube.
Referring to the drawings, Figure (1) denotes the powder punch. Fig. (2) shows the tube bent in U-shape. Fig. (3) is a view of the tube showing slashes or cuts therein. Fig. (4)-J hows the powder punch and the which as will be to form a loop and terminating in the twoarms a a the arm a is much longer than its companion arm, its end being pointed as shown in the drawings and serves as a powder punch. The arm a is short and serves as a support or spring to hold the arms of the U tube B in parallel relation. The tube B is preferably made of metal and is bent upon itself so as to form a U with parallel arms.
In Fig. (4) of the drawing I have shown in dotted lines the fuses C, held in place between the arms b b of the tube B.
It is evident that the fuses placed between the arms of the U tube B are held resiliently between them and that when the arms of the powder punch are inserted into the bores of the tube arms and released therein, that the resiliency of the metal bar will cause it to bindingly grip the interior of the tube, thereby sustaining said tube arms in parallel relation and positively clampin the fuses between the arms of the tube. It 1s clear that when the powder punch and tube are pulled apart that the fuses will drop from between the arms of the U tube.
Having thus shown my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A fuse holder and powder punch consisting of a round bar bent over on itself forming diverging resilient arms of unequal length, and a, U- haped tube the arms of which are adapted to receive said arms; whereby the arms of said bar and tube may be detachably connected.
2. A fuse holder and powder punch consisting of a bar bent over on itself forming non-parallel arms and a U-shaped tube the arms of which are adapted to receive the exterior of said arms whereby the arms of said bar and tube may be detachably connected.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL JAMES \VATTS.
