Be it known that I, OI-IACE D. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Highland Park, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Shaker, of which the following is a specification. V 1
This invention relates to shakers, and is in the nature of an improvement in part and a continuation in part of the invention embodied in the application filed by me February 24:, 1916, Serial No. 80,195.
The object of the present invention is to provide a shaker in which there are a plurality ofchambers whereby a single shaker may be utilized for two or more condiments, or the like.
In particular it is an object of my invention to provide a shaker which is simple in its parts, quickly operated, in which the several condiments or the like, are kept separate, and in which the operating parts or mechanism will not sacrifice the artistic features of the shaker.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction in whichthere is no danger of the operating ferrule. or annular member jamming the perforated top of my shaker, thereby insuring the free and easy scraping of the valve thereagainst.
A further object of the invention is to provide certain detail improvements in a construction as will be more fully described and pointed out hereinafter.
In the particularembodiment of my invention here illustrated, the perforated top is relatively fixed and does not constitute a part of the actuating mechanism for the valve as in certain modifications of my 00- pending application. However, it is to be understood that the invention, in so far as the improved features of construction are concerned, is not to be limited to a top of such construction.
By reference to the accompanying drawings and the following description, it will be seen that the present construction of my device is a very simple one, and very compact as well'as durable, and that the'device is highly artistic, the presence of operating mechanism in no manner impairing the artistic features of the shaker, and I consider this one of the characteristics of my in ention, It should. be noticed that the,

In the embodiment of my invention here shown, I have designated the body portion of the shaker by the reference numeral 1, the upper portion of the shaker terminating in a semi-spherical or dome-shaped top or cap 2, provided with perforations 3 all of substantially uniform and medium size. I A transversely extending shaft 7 is journaled upon the body portion of my present device on a line substantially coincident with the diameter of the semi-spherical top 2. The ends 8 of the shaft project through the body portion or casing of the shaker The shaft in the presentinstance is provided with alon'gitudinally extending slot 9.-adapted to receive the semi-'circular'valve 10. This valve has a curved edge 11 the curvature of which fits the inner surface of the top and acts as a scraperto scrape any condiment from the top or the perforations intoitS proper chamber. The shaft 7 extends substantially in alinement with the upper edge of the drawing, the perforations are of uniform size, the same perforations being used to allow the escape of the condiment from either chamber according to the position of the valve. The construction. here shown is characterized by great simplicity and economy of material. The body portion of the casing 1, in the arescnt instance, where it joinswith the cap or top is provided with a bearing shoulder 12 upon which rests the ring 13. This ring 13 is located below the ends of the shaft 7, whereby it is securely retained in place between said ends and said bearing, (l ig. 3). The ring 13, in the present instance, is provided along its inner periphery with vertically extending projections 14 and 15 struck uptherefrom, (Figs. 9 and whici project above the ends of the shaft 7 and cooperate therewith to" form stops to limit the rotation of the ring 13. The arangement is such that the rotation will be prevented when the valve 10 closes either chamber. v
As is shown in Fig. 9, to one side of the projection there is a recess 16 upon the inner side of the ring and a hole 17. The end of the shaft 7 adjacent this recessed part of the ring 13 is slotted, as shown at 18, Fig. 11.
An angular piece 19 of non corrodible wire or other material, and-of a construction such as is shown in Fig. 12, is provided with a horizontal portion or pintle 20 rotatably mounted within the opening 17, and a ver tically extending portion 21 slidably working in the slot 18. It will be seen that the rotation of the ring 13 will cause the rotation of the shaft 7 on its axis through the connection of the piece 19. The recess 16 of the rotatable ring through which the portion 21 of the piece 19 projects allows the free movemen of the piece back and forth. Mounted upon the ring 13 is an additional projection 22, which is also integrally formed, being cut out from the material constituting the ring 13, (Fig. 9). The projections, 14, 15 and 22, are all of the same height, and are spaced from each other, and the three perform a function, in addition to the function already described in regard to the projections 14 and 15.
To conceal and protect the rotatable ring 13, and its connection with the shaft, and to provide an exteriorly arranged annular operating member therefor, an annular'fer rule 23 is adapted to inches and be spun under, as shown at 24, the ring 13. The ferrule 23 tightly engages the ring 13 and to rotate the latter it is necessary to first rotate It is thought that the operation of my device will be obvious from the above description. v /hen the ferrule 23 1S rotated, the ring 13 1S rotated, and the connection of the rin 13with the shaft 7 causes the valve to assume a position over either one chamber or the other closing the same. As the ferrule is rotated in one direction, the stop 15 will contact with one end 8 of the shaft and prevent further rotation, and as the ferrule is rotated in the reverse direction, the pro jection 14 will engage the opposite end 8 of the shaft and prevent further rotation in the opposite direction. As the valve moves from one position to' the other, it sweeps and scrapes across the inside of the, spherical portion of the top, returning any condiment thereon back to its proper chamber and thoroughly cleaning it, so that the condiment in the other chamber will not mix with the first condiment when it escapes.
As was fully described in my co-pending application, the several condiments are inserted at the bottom, and for this purpose I have provided a suitable bottom 26 provided with openings 27 and 28 communicating with the chambers. rotatable member 29 provided with a single opening 30adapted to register, in the manner described in the co-pending application, with either of the openings 27 or 28. As the construction of the lower portlon of the devlce'herein shown does not constitute part of the present invention, a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary, as reference may be had to the co-pending application above mentioned.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be under stood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction herein shown, and described, for obvious modifications and changes will be apparent to any one skilled in the art.

In a device of the character described, a body portion having a plurality of chambers and a rigid perforated cap, a valve pivoted upon a horizontal axis for controlling said chambers for opening communication between the same and the perforated cap, a ferrule encircling said body portion adjacent said cap and rotatable about a vertical axis, and a direct connection between said ferrule and said valve, said connection slidably en- 7 gaging said valve.
5. In a device of the character described, a body portion having a partition dividing the same into two chambers for holding condiments of different natures, and a perforated rigid cap or top, a single valve pivoted at one edge adjacent the upper edge of said partition and having its opposite edge fitting closely to the inner side of the top thereby acting as a scraper, and a rotatable annular member encircling said body portion and having a direct connection with said valve for operating the same independently of the perforated top, said valve being adapted to swing from one side to the other to open communication between the chambers and the entire perforated portion each time.

In a device of the character described, a body portion having a plurality of chanr bers and a perforated cap or top, a valve controllin communication between said chambers and the cap or top, and having a trans versely extending shaft projecting beyond said body portion, a rotatable ring mounted upon and encircling said body portion and provided with projections adapted to engage the ends of said shaft to limit the rotation of said ring, an inclosing ferrule for operating said ring, the top of said ferrule being spaced. from said ring by said projections whereby the amming of the cap is prevented, and a connection between said rotatable ring and said shaft for actuating the valve.
13. In a device of the character described, a body portion having a plurality of chambers and a perforated cap or top, a valve controlling communication between said chambers and said cap or top, and having a transversely extending shaft projecting beyond the body portion, one end of said shaft being slotted, a rotatable annular member mounted upon and encircling said body portion, stops adapted to engage said shaft for limiting the rotation of said member, and an angular piece pivoted at one end to s id rotatable member and its other end projecting through the slot of the shaft and having a slidable engagement therewith, wherebylthe rotation of said member actuates said 78, "7,6

In a device of the character described, a body portion having a plurality of chambers, and a perforated cap or top, a valve controlling communication between said chambers and said cap or top, and having a transversely extending shaft projecting beyond said body portion, said shaft having ne end thereof slotted, a, rotatable ring mounted upon and encircling said body portion and provided with projections, an angu lar piece pivoted at one end to said rotatable ring and having its other end slidably engaging the slot of the shaft, whereby the rotation of said ring actuates said valve, and an actuating ferrule inclosing said member and having its top wall overhanging the face of the cap, or top, said projections performing the dual function of acting as stops to limit the rotation of said ring and of preventing the jamming of the top Wall of said ferrule against the perforated top.
