` CUT-OFF.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented lFeb. fil, ll9i9.
Application led April 4, 1918. Serial No. 226,774.
' character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with a gas line and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved cut-oftl of Vthis type which is normally maintained in open position under the influence of the pressure of the gas passing through the line and which automatically assumes a closed position upon dropping of the gas pressure.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved automatic cutoff which is manually moved into open position and which is maintained in such position through the medium of the pressure of the 'gas flowing through the line.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a valve chamber interposed in thepipe line and which chamber is provided with a port in communication with the atmosphere together with a swinging cut-off which automatically assumes a closed position upon a material decrease in the pressure of the gas flowing through the line and which cut-off shuts olf the How of the gas through the port when the cut-ofi' is f in open position together with an automatically operating valve for closing the port when the cut-off is in closed position.
The invention consists in the details cf construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cut-off whereby. certain important advantages are attained and the device'rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous 'for use,
as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view cover C held to the b vmember 9.
- form and has its marginal Vpipe line L and which line leads from a suitable source cf gas supply and delivers to any desired location. The section 1 of the pipe line L leading from the box extends slightlywithin the box and has its inner edge 2 arranged on a bevel. v
he box B includes the removable lid or ox in a conventional manner through the medium of the screws 3 or the like and interposed between the lid or cover C and the adjacent edge faces of the box B is a gasket 4 whereby a hermetic closure -is assured with the lid or cover C. in applied position.
Disposed transversely through the box B adjacent the discharging end thereof and in closeV proximity to the lid or cover C is a shaft 5 having one end portion extending exteriorly of the box B and provided with a ring 6 or the like whereby the shaft 5 may be manually rotated with convenience andl facility.
Arranged within the box B and loosely engaged with the shaft 5 are the extremities of a yoke 7 herein disclosed as substantially U-'shape in form and provided at substantially its center with an arm 8 extending in a direction away from the shaft minating in the enlarged eye or annular The yoke 7 'and the arm 8 aiford a member substantially in the form of a Y.
V denotes a valve or cut-oft1 formed preferably of rubber and having embedded therein a reinforcing disk l() preferably of metal. The valve or cut-oil V is circular in or peripheral portion provided with the voppositely directed flanges 11 formed of thin rubber and converging in cross section whereby the valve or cut-ofi'l is substantially cup-shape at opposite sides. When the valve or cut-oli V is in its elevated or raised positionone of the flanges 1]. contacts with the lid oreover C. The lid`l 5 and tery lits normal position or in Vobstruction or hindrance lthe end portion of the arm mation ofthe necessary suction for maintaining the valve or cut-on elevated under-` vthe influence of the pressure of the 'gas passing through the line L as suchV gas will have a natural tendency to escape through .the port'12. When the' pressure of the-gas within the line L materially decreases the valve or cut-off 'willautomatically form and seat upon the end of the section 1 of the line L extended within the box B so that-upon the pressure ofthe gas returning to normal, the gas can not iow from the box B. VBy this means it'will be at once self-evident that no gas will Abe able to escape through the burners which may have been extinguished upon the dropping of the gas pressure.
Carried by the shaft 5 is' a rock 'arm 1/1 of atl-length to engage the intermediate or base portion 'of the yoke ingfthe requisite rotation to theshaft 5v the valve 'or cut-'olf V may be readily returned to contact with the lid or 'cover C as illustrated in Fig. 1.
I iind it of advantage to have the arm 14 normally maintained in lowered position so that the possibility of said arm offering any to the dropping of the valve or cut-off V'is avoided. For this 'reasonlI employ the spring 15 having one end portion engaged with the -arm 14 and its opposite end portion contacting with the lid or cover C with the intermediate portion 16 of said spring coiled-about the shaft 5. As the yoke 7 is loosely engaged with the shaft 5 it will be understood that thespring 15 may readily return the arm 14 to its normal position without affecting the normal or raised position of the valve or cut-'oif "V.
Supported intermediate its vlength by the inner face of the lid or cover C is an arm 17 having one end portion provided with the pad 18 of rubber or kindred material and 'which' pad serves to close the port 12 when the valve or cut-off V is in lowered position so that gas is prevented from escape through the port 12after the gas pressure has been raised and beforethe valve or cut-off V is againelevated. The support for the arm 17 is' so positioned `as to' permit the weight of 17 at the side of the' support therefor remote from the pad 18 to automatically cause the pad 18 to assume a closed position when the valve or cut-ofil V is lowered. This portion ofthe arm 17 isl also of such'a length as to be engaged by the valve or cut-off V when raised so that the pad 18will be thrown into `an open position.
The pad 18`a'nd the arm'17 constitute a valve. It will also be understood that the box B affords a ,valve chamber.
From the foregoing description, it is it may h also be obvious that my invention is suscep- 7 so that upon impart-- thought to be obvious that a cut-off constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well Aadapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which be assembled and operated and it will tible` of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood yas limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation ofthe Vseveral parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in Vpractice except as hereinafter claimed.
