ATTACHMENT FOR TEST-TUBE DIVIDERS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at H01 oke, in the county of Phillips and State of olorado, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Test-Tube Dividers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to dividers used in connection with test tubes for determining the percentage of butter fat in cream, and it is the object of the invention to provide means for use with dividers of that character to facilitate the manipulation thereof, it being ordinarily a difficult and troublesome matter to properly hold the points of the dividers in place against the cylindrical surface of the test tube, due to the points slipping to one side or the other.
The object of the invention is to provide a device either attached to or forming a part of the divider and serving the oilice of holding one point in proper position while the other point is adjusted to its position.
It is also the object of the invention to provide a device of the nature indicated which is simple and inexpensive in construction, which can be used upon various dividers, and which is thoroughly practical and eflicient in use.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction, hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The dividers illustrated embodies the legs 1 and 2 having their butt ends jointed or pivoted together as usual, and provided with the pointed terminals 3 and 4.

hasone end secured to said terminal at one side thereof, and the other pointed terminal of the member 5 is offset away from the terminal 4 to one side of the plane of the legs 1* and 2, and the pointed terminal 6 of the member 5 projects beyond the terminal 4, as seen in Fig. 2. As illustrated, the member 5 is detachably and adjustably assembled with the leg 2, the butt end of the member 5 having a clamp 7 to embrace the leg and the ends of the clamp are connected by a screw 8 whereby the clamp can be contracted to tightly embrace the leg of the dividers to hold the device in place. hen the screw 8 is loosened, the device can be adjusted or removed. The member 5 can be attached to the dividers in any other suitable manner, however, and may constitute an integral part of the dividers preferred.
The terminal 6 is so arranged, that when the point of the leg 2 is placed against the side of the test tube T, the terminal 6 is adapted to bear against the test tube, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby to prevent the leg 2 from slipping toward the opposite side, pressure being applied to said leg 2 to hold the terminal 6 against the test tube, thereby holding the pointed end of the leg 2 in place while the leg 1 is swung to bring its point to the desired point of the test tube. It is thus an easy matter to hold the point of the leg 2 in the desired position while the other point of the dividers is adjusted, by applying a slight pressure to the leg 2 it is prevented from slipping, the pressure applied to the leg 2 being away from the observer in Figs. 1 and 2. By disposing the leg 2 the lowermost, the lower point can be held in place while the upper point is being positioned, and without danger of burning or scalding the fingers, which sometimes occurs in the use of ordinary dividers. The terminal 6 is located at one side of the dividers, so that the opposite side thereof can be placed on the paper or chart without the interference of the terminal 6.
