Uphh the P e h -1y h ismo ted abs in position in the press body, the point of the shell being downward; due to its weight the shell descends in the press body, driving back a part of the water into the filling tank 6, the valve is then closed so as to interrupt communication between the press body a and the tank 6; then the fly or fly wheel is is rotated to press the ram 9 into theinterior of the lower cylindrical cavity (Z; the
water contained in the press body below the shell transmits to this latter the pressure exerted by the ram 9, under the action of this pressure the shell is caused to rise and its base is thus applied against the projection we carried by the bed or abutment Z.
It will be noticed that the pressure transmitted is uniformly spread over the whole surface of that part of the shell which onters the press body, and that during the testing the reaction is supported by the press body.
When the testing is finished the fly 7c is rotated in the reverse direction so as to withdraw theram g and cause the pressure below the shell to cease; then the bed or abutment Z of the press'body is disengaged and raised so that the shell'mav be removed from the press body.
In the .modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and at the pressure is transmitted to the water which fills the cavity of the press body and which has been furnished by a filling tank 0 as above described, by a pressure pump which forces water under pressure into the press body by means of a tube 0 which communicates with a channel 79 formed in the press body a and opening into the'cavity of this latter.
In this modification the bed or abutment Z is capable of being displaced by an oscil- I lating movement; the press body a has two trunnions (4 upon which are hinged the two cheeks of the bed Z, and it also has two stops 9 g between which moves a heel 1* carried by one of these checks.
In another modification illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6the pressure is transmitted to the water in the press body by a stepnp arrangement. The press body a is prolonged at its lower hart by an auxiliary pump body (Z in which moves a pressure piston 9 At the upper part of this auxiliary pump channel 7) for the admission of water under" high pressure furnished by an accumulator or other convenient apparatus; a suitable valve 8 allows the water at high pressure to i be admitted or to be cut off.
The pump body (Z has an opening 2? intermediate of its ends upon which is branched a pipe u to allow the escape of any water which has leaked past the piston.
The combined press body a and body (Z of the auxiliary pump are mounted upon a frame n.
In this modification the displacement of the bed or abutment Z is effected by a transverse movement. The bed is mounted upon four small rollers or wheels 10 which rest upon rails a, w hich latter arecarried by the said frames,- the two cheeks of this bed have each, upon their inner face, a'projecting part Z which may come into contact with a shoulder g upon the press body.
The operation of these two modifications is the same in principle as that of 'the first described construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. l
It will be understood that these construe duced so that the latter may move therein in the manner of aram,means for sending a liquid under pressure in the interior of the said press body, so as to tend to move body into which the shell is partially introthe shell, and a bed against which the base of the shell is driven under the action of the water forced into the press body.
2. A press for testing the bases of artillery shells and the like, comprising a press body into which the shell is partially intro duced so that the latter may move therein in the manner of a ram, means for sending a liquid under pressure in the interior of the said press body, so as to tend to move the shell,-- and abed against which the base of the shell is driven under the action of the water forced into the press body, the said bed being movableto permit the introduction of the shell in the press body before the testingand its withdrawal after the testing.
8. A press for testing the bases of artillery shells and the like, comprising a press body into which the shell is partially introduced so that the latter may move therein in the manner of a ram,a filling tank containing water, in communication with the press body,means for interrupting the communication between the said filling tank and the press body,means for exerting the required pressure upon the water filling the interval between the press body and the shell,and a bed against which the base of the shell is driven under the action of the water forced into the press body, the said bed being movable to permit the introduction of the shell in the press body before the testing and its withdrawal after the testing.
l. A press for testing the bases of artillery shells and the like, comprising a press body having at its upper part a circular opening provided with a leather cup and into which the shell is partially introduced so that the latter may move therein in the manner of a ram, the eye of this shell being previously closed by a plug,there being a cylindrical cavity provided in the press body and communicating with the cavity of the tank in communication with the said cylindrical cavity,means for interrupting the communication between this filling tank and the cylindrical cavity,a ram movable in the cylindrical cavity and adapted to exert the required pressure upon the liquid contained in the press body,means for actuating this ram,and a bed against which is driven the base of the shell under the action ofthe water forced in the press body, the said bed being removably mounted on the press body to permit the introduction of the shell into the press body before the testing and its withdrawal after the testing.
