DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nee. ii, iaiv,
Application filed September 20, 1913. Serial No. 790,387.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD Posson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to' which it appertains to make and use the same. 1
My invention relates to improvements in door hangers; and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views. Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation showing a portion of the body of a box car, the side door of which is mounted in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the car body and door on the line w 2: of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4: is a vertical section corresponding to Fig. 3, but looking in the opposite direction and showing a back stop.
The car body which is indicated as an entirety by the numeral 1, may be of the usual or any suitable construction, and as shown, is provided with the customary side door openings 2 and wooden side sills 3, which latter are bolted, or otherwise rigidly secured to a metal underframe indicated in part by the numeral 4. The) side door 5, which as shown, is a wooden structure, but may be otherwise constructed, at its lower edge is rigidly secured, by heavy rivets or bolts 8, to flanges of hanger brackets 7. These hanger brackets 7 are bifurcated and recessed to aflord pockets for small wheels or rollers 8 that are removably journaled thereto by pins 9. These pins 9 are passed through the inner and outer flanges of the brackets 7 and are detachably held in place by keys or cotters 10. The rollers 8 run on a track rail 11 which is preferably constructed from a rolled angle iron or steel bar, the horizontal flange of which is turned vertically downward at its outer edge. This track rail extends horizontally below the door opening 2, and a sufiicient distance to one side thereof, to permit the door to be run or slid to a position entirely out of line terlocked to the track rail, against lateral displacement, but are free to travel thereon.
The entire weight of the door 5 is carried on the rollers 8. The upper edge of the door underlies a horizontal furring strip 14: and is overlapped and held in place by a long metallic retaining strip 15. The furring strip and retaining strip are rigidly secured together and to the flashing and upper portion of the car frame, by means of nut-equipped bolts 16.
What I claim is:
The combination with a car body, having a side door opening, of a track rail secured tothe side of said car body and extending under the door opening and to one side thereof, said track rail having a horizontal flange with a down-turned outer edge, a car 7 door, hanger brackets secured to the lower edge of said door and having pockets, open at their bottoms, to receive rollers, journal pins detachably secured to said hanger brackets, and extended endwise through said roller pockets, means for holding said journal pins in operative positions, and rollers in said pockets removably journaled on said pins and arranged to run on said track rail, each of said hanger brackets having a pair of depending hooks overlapped with and interlocked to, the down-turned outer edge of said track rail, the depending hooks of each pair being located, one on each side Tim of the pocket of the respective hanger In testimony whereof I afiix my signature bracket and between which hooks the rein presence of tWo itnesses. spective roller may be inserted or removed EDWARD POSSON. from said pocket When the door is moved to Witnesses:
5 carry said hanger bracket beyond the adja- B. GEORGE GREY,
cent end of the track rail. 7 C. J. MOORE.
