Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Bayonne, a citizenof the United,States residing, at

'Beaverton, in the county ofwVVashington and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Guards, of

which the following .is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings. i

This invention relates to certain improvements in guards and hasrelation more particularly to adevice of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with vessels, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be employed to protect a vessel against injury from torpedoes, mines or the like.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily and conveniently adjusted into either an operative or an inoperative position relative to the side of a vessel.

7 The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the. several parts of my improved guard, wherein certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same' with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a guard constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position; and

Fig. 2 is an enlarged view partly in end elevation and partly in section illustrating my improved guard as herein embodied.

' As disclosed in the accompanying drawings I-I denotes the hull of a vessel having secured to the upper portion of each side thereof a series of longitudinally spaced brackets 1 having pivotally engaged there with about the horizontal axes 2, the upper end portions of the rigid brace members 4 of a predetermined length. axes 5 with the outer end portionsof the -1zigid brace members 6 carried by the elongated member 7 disposed longitudinally of theships side and contacting therewith at a predetermined point below the water line."

i The opposite end portions of the elongated member 7 have engaged therewith the flexible members 8 which are operatively engaged with the winding drum 9,.suitably mounted upon the deck of the ship.

Suitably secured to the lower portions of the rigid brace members 4 are a pair of imposed nets 10 positioned at opposite sidesof the braces 4 and maintained by said braces in predetermined spaced relation. The mesh of the nets 10 is such as to receive the forward end of a torpedo but prevent a torpedo passing therethrough.

I11 order to reduce the strain on the shield formed by the nets on the supporting braces, I preferably provide a cable 11, which is attached to the bow of the vessel in any suit able manner, as by the bracket 12, this cable extending around on opposite sides of the hull and being operatively connected in any suitable manner to the several braces 4:, as illustrated in Fig. 2, so that the forward movement of the vessel will be transmitted through this cable to the braces 4E and the nets supported thereon. Without this cable there would be great strain upon the pivots engaging the members 4 with the brackets 1, and upon the braces 4:.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a guard con structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is suceptible of some change and modification without materially departing from the principle and spirit'thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in a Uopis of this pat ent may be obtained for said outstanding brace members and of the disposed longitudinally of the hull, outstanding brace members carried by said elongated member, the outer end portions'of said outstanding brace members and of the first named brace members being pivotally connected, lifting means coacting with the elongated member, and a pair of nets operatively engaged with the outer end portions of the first named brace members being in imposed relation but separated one from the other. I

In combination with the hull of a ship, rigid brace members pivotally engaged with the side thereof, an elongated member disposed longitudinally of the hull, outstanding brace members carried by said elongated member, the outer end portions of said outstanding brace members and of the first named brace members being pivotally connected, a winding mechanism carried by the hull, and aflexible member operatively engaged with the elongated member and the winding mechanism, anda net operatively engaged with the outer end portions of the first named brace members.
