SWIMMING ATTACHMENT.
SPEGIFIGATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 760,881, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed January 15, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN B. LAWSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swimming Attach ments, of which the following is a specification. 1
The object of this invention is to provide means attached to the arms and legs of a permingthat is, attain greater speed than is possible without such devices.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a figure with my improvements in connection therewith in which the flukes are open. Fig. 2 is a similar view in which the flukes are closed. -Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of my improvements detached from the suit and applicable to the legs of the wearer. Fig. 4 is a plan View, partly in section,- of my improvements arms of the wearer.
In the accompanylng' drawmgs I have shown my improvements 1n connectlon with tached directly to the arms and legs of the my invention.-
The suit 1 is designed to be waterproof and entirely inclosing the body of the wearer, serving to keep the body warm and dry. I
My improved attachment comprises in this instance a tubular section 2, having a portion 3, turned at substantially right angles to the tubular portion. To the tubular portion 2 are connected a series of. clamps 4, having perforated ears 5. To each clamp ispivoted a fluke 6, having its face extending transverse to the, length of the tubular portion. The tubular sections 2 are connected to the arm and leg receptacles of the suit by the straps 7, the portion 3 of the sections secured to the legs pass under the feet and the portion 3 of the sections secured to the arms located within reach of the hands. The flukes are con- Serial No. 189,216. (No model.)
nected by a rod 8, and the ,rod connecting the flukes of the leg-sections has a'link 9 pivotally connected thereto, and to the other end of the rod is 'pivotally connected a bar 10, extending through a slot 11 in the main tubular portion 2, its other end pivoted to the clamp 12, connected to the section 3. A foot-rest 13 is supported by the bar 10.
A link 14 has a pivotal connection with the rod 8, connecting the flukes of the arm-sections, and a bar 15 has one end pivoted to the link 14 and its other end pivotally connected to the clamp 16, connectedto the section 3.
and legs at rest, while the body is forced ahead.
The operation is repeated each time the arms and legs are moved. By this arrangement the person having my attachment connected to his arms and legs will attain greater speed through the water than without them, and in cases-of disaster on the, water near the shore he may be able to reach the shore with a rope before becoming exhausted or frozen.
The suit will protect the wearer, which will allow him to stay longer in the water than without it. v
I claim as my invention 1. A swimming attachment, comprising a bar, a fluke having a pivotal'connection with thei bar, and means for positively opening the flu e.
2. A swimming attachment, comprising a bar having a portion extending substantially at right angles to its length, a fluke having pivotal connection with the bar, and connections between the fluke and bar whereby the fluke may be positively opened.
3. A swimming attachment, comprising a Patented ma 24, 1904.
bar, a. series of fiukes having pivotal conneca linked connection between the rod and bar. tion with the bar, a rod connecting the flukes and a plate supported by one of the links. and connections between the rod and bar I whereby the fiukes can be positively opened.
