EUGHARISTE DEGAGNE, OF LIMOILOU, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SOUNDING DE VICE FOR VE SSELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUOI-IARISTE DEGAGNI J, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Limoilou, in the county .of Quebec, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Devices for Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to sounding devices for Vessels.
The object of my invention is to provide means for actuating an alarm when a vessel travels into water of less depth than is required for safety, or travels over an object on the bed of the body of water in which the vessel is moving.
A further object is to provide a construction which may be used for a variety of depths and which may be adjusted in various positions on the vessel on which it is used.
My invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application,- I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation; and, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, both of which views show the application of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a contact member of a shape to easily pass through the water, and provided with projecting fingers 2 at its lower edge adapted to contact w1th an object disposed in its line of travel. Cables 3 have their lower ends secured to the forward end of the contact member 1 and are movably disposed through guide-ways 4 secured to a hull A of a vessel. After passing through the guide-ways 4 the cables 3 are passed through a block 5 and have their ends secured as at 6. By means of the cables 3 the contact member 1 may be raised or lowered to suit varying depths and Specification of Letters Patent.

conditions. Flexible members 7 have their lower ends secured to the contact member 1 adjacent its end opposite the cables 3 and are passed over a block 8 which is slidably disposed on a cable 9 between the masts 10. The ends of the cables 7 are also secured as at 6 in any suitable way.
By slackening the cables 3 and tightening the cables 7 the contact member 1 may be adjusted to varying depths and adjusted longitudinally of the vessel A. Instead of being secured as at 6, or in addition to being thus secured, a suitable alarm mechanism may be connected to the upper ends of the cables 3 and 7, so as to give an alarm when the contacting member 1 strikes the bed of the body of water in which the vessel floats, or strikes an object which is likely to injure the Vessel.
The contacting member 1 may be set by means of the cables 3 and 7 for a certain depth slightly greater than the draft of the vessel A. In passing over a bed where the water is of less depth than that set for the contact member, or where there is an object in the path of movement of the contacting member, the contacting member will strike the bed or obstacle and in that way move the cable so as to actuate any ordinary form of alarm which may be located at 6.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a hull of a vessel, a contact member, a flexible adjustable member secured to the hull of the vessel and having its lower end secured to the contact member, a block movably supported by the vessel, a flexible member secured to the contact member and disposed through the block, and means for securing the free end of the flexible member.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
