IMPRovi-:MENT IN HEAD-eLocKs Fon sHoEMAKERs.
Speclcation forming part of Letters Patent No." 124,908, dated March 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. MORTON, of Deering, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Head-Block; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is hereby made a part of athis specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my invention.
The purpose of my invention is to produce a new and useful head-block for shoemakers use.
A represents, in the accompanying drawing, the base or block upon which the device rests. B and C show the two circular plates or disks resting on the top of said block. The lower disk is hinged to the base A by the Crotchethinge D, so that the said disk can be lifted off from the base in a vertical plane, carryingwith it, of course, the upper disk C. The upper disk G .is rotary (as common) on the pivot E, extending down through it, and the disk BV above it is secured by a nut or bead, as seen at F. Upon the top side of the disk G, on the pivot or bolt E, is set the nut G to hold the same and adjust the pressureor tightness between the two disks. Rising from the disk C are two standards, H and I-I being pivoted at K so as to be capable of a lateral motion in a vertical plane either1 toward or-f'rom H, and H being rigidly iixed on the said disk C. From the tops of these two standards rise the points L M to receive the lasts, as indicated in the drawing'. Through the standard I passes the screwbolt N, having the thumb-screw O. By this thumb-screw the post or standard I is pressed nearer or drawn back from H.
The operation is to place the last on the points L M, then by screwing up the thumbscrew O the two standards or their points will be pressed or held so firmly toward each other as to securely hold the last in place on the block for all the purposes of the workman. Reversing the screw, of course, releases the last..
I am aware of Letters Patent granted to James Webb August 1, 1871, and claim none of the devices therein described.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination,in a head-block, of the two standards H and I and two points, L and M, with the thumb-screw O, pivot K, screw-bolt N, all in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
J. H. MORTON.
