Be it `known that I, ORLANDO V. FLORA, of Madisoinrin the county of Jefferson, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Vises and Ildo herebydeclare that the followingis Aa full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable Vthose skilled in the art to make and use the same,

reference being had to the accompanying drawings, for-ming part of 'this specification. l

' This invention relates to that class of visesv by which Vwe are `-enabled to clamp any f'oruioi` article, whether its sides be parallel or inclined. l

Figure 1 is an elevation'of the vise.v Figure 2 is Va plan. Figure 3 is a horizontal section through the line A B, fig. 1.- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A and B are, respectively, the fast and loose jaws of thevise. O is a box or nut, which passes through the fast jaw, and in which turnsthe screw D. This screw passes loosely through the trunnion-washer E, which ,is supported vertically by means of the journals or trunnions.

Where the screw D impinges on the washer there is a double bevel, as shown in fig. 1, for the purpose of giving thescrew a good bearing when theV vise is: either closed or open. These vertical vjournals also allow a fair bearing for the head ofthe screw D,`wheu a hevelled piece, m, is clamped in the vise, as in fig. 2.

On the lower end of the loose jaw are the lugs or journals G G, which have `bearings in the elliptical open'- ings in the supports FF, and are kept up to thefront Side of the said openings .by means of the notched gib -or `key it, when using the vise to clamp pieces parallel on both sides. But when clamping a`bevelle l piece, as

The key 1t may be again pnt in place whenv desired by the operator.

Having thus described my invention, what I`claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the jaw B, vibrating' washer E, and screw D, all constructed and arranged substanmuy as deseribed. y

2. The jaw B, with lugs G on the lower end of its shank', in combination with the supports F and gib n, all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
