GUN-SIGHT.
Application filed December 13, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. ARTHUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alder Point, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to gun sights wherein a hood movably mounted upon a gun barrel or the like is arranged or adapted to receive and retain various types of removable sights; and the objects of my invention are First, to provide an improved gun sight wherein the sight may be shielded from light rays;
Second, to provide improved means adapted to prevent light rays from producing a glare on a gun slght.
Third, to provide an improved interchangeable gun sight wherein various types of sights may be easily and readily interchanged.
Fourth, to provide improved means for elevating the hood and sight therein which shall also be adapted to normally retain the said sight in proper position within said hood.
I accomplish these several objects by means of the preferred form of the invention disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawings, and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved gun sight as applied to a gun barrel or the like.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line XX of Fig. 1 of the drawings in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line YY of Fig. 1 in the direction indicated by the arrows, disclosing an ordinary notched sight therein.
Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3 but disclosing a peep sight inserted within the hood.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of the peep sight removed from the hood; and
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of another form of notched sight which may be used.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a hood having a longi- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 137,740.
tudinal flexible extension 2 having the outer end thereof dovetailed as at 3 into a gun barrel 4: or the like whereby said hood may be mounted capable of vertical movement relatively to said gun barrel.
The hood 1 is provided in the lower portion thereof with a transverse slot 6 ar ranged approximately midway between the ends of said hood and an arcuate beveled recess 7 arranged directly opposite said slot 6.
A suitable sight 8 having a central V- shaped notch 9 and a guide line 10 thereon to render the notch 9 more conspicuous is arranged to seat within the slot 6 and is also provided with shoulders 11 arranged to engage the sides of the hood 1 adjacent the upper ends of the slot 6 and thereby prevent a lateral movement of the said sight 8 wher by said sight 8 may be retained properly in alinement with the longitudinal center of the gun barrel 4.
The sights slidably or removably mounted within the slots 6 may be of various types or designs to suit the requirements of the operator.
A peep sight 14 having a central aperture 16 of the required diameter is provided with an arcuate beveled edge 17 arranged to engage the arcuate beveled recess 7 of the hood 1 as disclosed in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Or a sight may be used as disclosed in Fig. 6 wherein a black sight is provided with a white central line 19 to render the notch 9 more conspicuous.
Either type of sight is slidably or removably mounted within the slot 6 of the hood 1 and normally retained in proper position therein by means of a slide 21 which is slidably mounted within a suitable groove 22 in the top of the gun barrel 4 and is provided with a ladder 23 having serrated shoulders 24 arranged to engage the bottom of the sight and thereby retain the same within the slot 6 when the hood is elevated at various elevations as represented by the serrated shoulders 24 of the ladder 23.
The flexible connection or extension 2 is arranged to normally retain the hood 1 closely to the top of the barrel 4 and also to hold the sight rigidly down upon the shoulders 24 of the ladder 23, thereby insuring the accliliracy of the position of the top of said sig t.
The top of the barrel 4 adjacent the slot or groove 22 may be provided with suitable graduations 26 by means of which the elevation of the hood 1 and sight therein may be indicated.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved sight for guns and the like adapted to receive and retain various types or forms of sights as well as improved means whereby said sights may be readily adjusted and retained in a proper position.
Having thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent iS- 1. A gun sight comprising a gun barrel; a hood movably mounted upon the gun barrel; a suitable sight removably mounted Within the approximate center of the hood; and means arranged to retain the sight within the hood and to support said hood at various elevations above the gun barrel.
2. A gun sight comprising a gun barrel; a hood removably mounted upon the gun barrel; and having a transverse slot arranged midway between the ends thereof a suitable sight removably mounted within the slot; and means adapted to normally retain the sight within the slot and to support the hood at various elevations above the gun barrel.
8. A gun sight comprising a gun barrel;
a hood removably mounted upon the gun barrel; and having a transverse slot arranged midway between the ends thereof and an arcuate beveled recess arranged op posite the slot; a peep sight removably mounted within the slot and having an arcuate beveled edge arranged to engage the arcuate beveled recess of the hood; and means slidably mounted upon the gun barrel to normally retain the peep sight within the slot and to support the sald hood at various elevations above the barrel.
4. A gun sight comprising a gun barrel; a hood having a longitudinal flexible exten sion and the transverse slot arranged midway between the ends of said hood; means adapted to secure the end of the flexible extension to the top of the gun barrel; where by the hood may be raised against the tension of the extension; a suitable gun sight removably mounted within the transverse slot; and a slide slidably mounted upon the gun barrel and beneath the hood thereon and having serrated shoulders thereon arranged to retain the sight within the hood and to support said hood at various elevations above the gun barrel.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature.
GHARLES A. ARTHUR.
