Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE FUI-IRER MCCLEARY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sunland, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Sights, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to gun sights, and the principal object of the same is to provide a sight that can be readily adjusted for various ranges, and also to provide a shaded peep sight that permits of a comparatively free and unobstructed vision.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the annexed sheet of drawing wherein one preferred and practical form'of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :--Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved sight. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof taken on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is an inverted detail perspective view of the base plate of the improved sight. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the sighting cylinder. Fig. 6 is an end view of the gun sight.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the improved gun sight comprises a flat, elongated base plate 1 the undersurface of the forward end of which is provided with a lug 2 for interlocking engagement with the usual slot of a gun barrel (not shown) to normally hold the forward end of said plate rigid with the barrel. The upper surface of the forward portion of the plate 1 is provided with a double row of fractional range graduations 3. The rear portion of said plate is thickened, as indicated at 4, said rear portion tapering longitudinally and having its thickest portion at the rear end. The undersurface of the rear of said plate is provided with a longitudinal groove 5, the deepest portion of which is at the rear end. The upper surface of the rear portion of said plate carries a shade tube 6 which tapers longitudinally, the smaller end being at the rear. The rear end of said plate is free and said plate is formed of resilient metal the tension of which tends to retain the same in contact with the gun barrel.
A sighting cylinder 7 is provided with radiating arms 8 which retain said cylinder in a central position within the shade tube 6. Said arms are resilient and frietionally engage the inner surface of shade tube 6 so that the cylinder is always retained in the longitudinal center of the said shade tube and may be adjusted longitudinally of said shade. The opening through cylinder 7 flares toward each end, as indicated at 9, to prevent said opening appearing flat when elevated.
A wedge 10 is slidable in groove 5 to adjust the rear or free end of plate 1, said wedge sliding on the gun barrel and being provided with lateral wings 11 at the forward end which are crimped over the plate 1 to hold the wedge in slidable relation thereto. Said wings are suitably cut-away to provide pointers 12 which cooperate with the graduations 3 to indicate the range.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the improved sight can be readily adjusted by moving the wedge 10 longitudinally of plate 1 and that said wedge and the graduations 3 indicate the range. It will also be seen that the shade 6 prevents glimmering that would interfere with the sighting and also that the sighting cylinder 7 by means of its radiating arms is always retained in the longitudinal center of the said shade. The shade tube 6 tapers longitudinally, the smaller end being at the rear, its taper being so that when in position for being sighted its rear end will completely eclipse all the other part so that neither the inside nor the outside is visible except its rear end as above stated.
