IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOM3.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 124,847, dated March 19, 1872.
I, MARSENA Mi MURRAY, of Cincinnati,
Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Securing Wooden'Slats to Metallic Springs in the Construction of Bed- Bottoms, of which device the following is a specification:
This is an improved method of fastening the wooden slats to the supportingsprin gs in those bed-bottoms in which a series of such slats are attached to and supported at or near their ex tremities upon two series of spiral or other suitable metallic springs, from which they are readily detached for shipment or for reversal; and iny invention consists in a peculiarlyformed and adapted catch-pin or hook, which is permanently secured to the slat and is held immovably therein when in use, but which is capable of being shifted for reversal when the slat is detached; the said hook enabling the engagement of the slat with its supportingsprings to be readily and effectually accomplished, and its disengagement to be effected with equal ease, when required, whether for replacement, reversal, or compact storage.
Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing a supporting-spring and a portion of one of my improved slats detached. Fig. 2 is a partiallysectioned elevation of the same parts attached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion of the slat with its hook engaged to the supporting-spring. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the slat at the place of insertion of the hook. Fig. 5 represents my device in con nection with another form of supporting-sprin g.
A represents a portion of the supportingframe, and B a spiral spring, which may be of the represented or other suitable form. This spring terminates at its upper end in a straight horizontal portion, 1), transverse of the supported slat D, and having a kink, b, to receive and hold against lateral disturbance a catchpin or hook, O, of the represented U-form, and occupying an orifice, d, in the slot, and one end of it also occupying, when the other end is engaged around the supporting-spring, the uppermost of two notches or excavations, (1 d, in the slat and being thus embedded, is prevented from turning in the slat, and also from presenting any such projection as to catch or tear the bedding.
It will be seen that, after having been once inserted and bent to the represented U-form, the hook 0 cannot be lost out of the slat; and that, while engaged around the spring, it is, as before stated, securely held to its position by the notch on what is, for the time being, the upper side of the slat.
This devicemay be used in connection with other forms of supporting-spririgs-snch, for example, as that shown at Fig. 5.
I claim as new and of my invention- The notched and perforated bed-bottomslat D d d 01, having the U-formed reversible hooks or catches U, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of'which invention I hereunto Set my hand.
M. M. MURRAY.
