EXTENSION-TABLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERNATH J. SIEGEL, a subject of the Emperor of AustriaHungary, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to extension tables and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide reliable and efficient means for concealing the extension members of the table underneath the table top when not desired for use, and which when the table is extended may be opened out in position for use in extending the table.

Another object of the invention is to simplify the construction of extension tables and to render them more efficient and easy of operation in extending the table and in concealing the extension members.

These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of an extension table made in accordance with my invention and showing the table separated to expose the extension members folded prior to swinging the side members outward;

Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of one-half of the table showing the extension bars and other parts in section the table being shown in nonextended condition;

Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the extension members in their uppermost posi tion, and the table shown extended;

Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the table showing one side of the extension members open and the other side inclosed;

Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the manner of hinging the extension members.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the pedestal of the table provided with a series of feet 2 of the usual or any suitable construction. Secured to the top of the pedestal 1 is a transverse base member 3 for sustaining the operative parts of the table top. connected to each of the bars 4 are the extension bars 5 said bars being connected at their outer ends underneath the rigid table top members 6.

The base member 3 is provided in each of its side edges with a pair of relatively spaced notches 3. Secured to the base member 3 and extending at right angles thereto are supporting bars 7 Bars 8 are also supported upon and secured to the member 3 and are spaced from the bars 7. Supported upon the bars 8 upon the opposite sides of the table are the extension leaves, which comprise central members 9 and connected to each of the members 9 by means of hinges 10 are the folding members 11, which are opened out when the table is extended as shown in Fig. 1. Each bar 7 intersects one notch of each pair and is provided with a notch 7, which registers with the intersected notches. Connected to the lower sides of the members 9 are vertical guides 13, which fit in the notches 3 and 7. By virtue of their engagement with the walls of the notches 3 and 7, the guides 13 hold the extension leaves against both transverse and longitudinal movement with relation to the table.

The lower ends of the guides 13 are bent angularly to provide stops, which are adapted to receive the base member to limit the upward movement of the leaves.

The operation of the table may be briefly described as follows:

When the table is closed or contracted with the two members 6 abutting and the dowel pins 1 1 on one member projecting into the sockets 15 of the other member and it is desired to extend the table, these two parts are separated and the hinged extension members 11 on one side of the table are opened out to raise upon the extension. bars l and 5 at their outer sides while the central portion 9 of the table is guided upon the two members 13. The members 13 are each provided with stop lugs 13, as shown in Fig. 4 and these lugs come into contact with the base member 3 when the leaves are raised. A spacing bar 7 spaces the table top 6 from the bars 7. It will be understood that one or both series of the extension members may be utilized and that when opened out, the dowel pins 16 fit into alining sockets to hold the parts closely together. When it is desired to again contract the table, the members 11 are swung inward and the member 9 drops to its supporting place upon the bars 7 and 8 and the two members 6 may be pushed together;

My invention is simple in construction, can be manufactured at low cost, is reliable and efiicient in use and is easy to operate.
