Description

J. S. ROEDER.
DUSTER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2. 1911.
Patented Nov. 27', I91? WITNESSES nnrrn stares PATENT @FFJECE.
JOSEPHINE SEYMOUR ROEDER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DUSTER.-
Application filed April 2, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnri-rmn SEYMOUR Ronnnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Duster, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved duster arranged to enable the user to do ordinary dusting, such as is required in homes, in ofiices, and in other places, and also to allow the user to readily reach corners, narrow spaces and crevices in furniture and other articles to properly clean the Same and without danger of marring or otherwise injuring the dusted parts. Another object is to permit of readily removing the dusting cloth for washing the same whenever it is deemed necessary and to replace the. same after washing, thus rendering the cluster serviceable for a long time. In order to produce the desired result, use is made of a stick, a dusting cloth held on 25 the stick a distance from the outer end thereof, and a covering of soft material inclosing the said outer end, the said dusting cloth projecting beyond the said outer end and being adapted to be folded back onto the 3d stick to expose the said covered outer end of the stick to permit using the latter for dust ing and cleaning crevices, corners and other narrow spaces and the like.
A practical embodiment of the invention 35 is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the duster at with the dusting cloth in position for dust- Fig 2 is a similar view of the same with the dusting cloth folded back upon the stick to expose the covered end of the stick for 45 dusting and cleaning crevices and the like;
ig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the duster;
Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line H of Fig. 3; and
569 Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the dusting cloth in extended position.
The stick of the duster has its forward end 11 made tapering and the stick is provided with an annular groove 12 adjacent 555 the tapering portion 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. In the annular groove 12 is held Speeififlation of Letters ,Patenc.

a ring 13 of a suitable soft material to which is sewed or otherwise secured the inner end of a covering 14 of cloth or other similar soft material and inclosing the tapering end 11. The covering 14 is preferably formed of a lining 15 fittingsnugly over the tapering end 11, and a number of strips of cloth 16 extending lengthwise of the lining l5 and passing around the outer closed end of the lining, with the inner ends of the strips attached to the lining and with the latter to the ring 13. By the arrangement described the covered end of the stick can be readily pied for cleaning corners, crevices and the On the inner end of the coverings 14 are arranged in spaced relation two collars 20 and 21 made of soft material such as strips of cloth wound helically into ring shape with the layers sewed or otherwise fastened together and the innermost layers secured by stitches to the covering 14, so as to securely hold the collars 20 and 21 in position on the said lining and in spaced relation one to the other. The outermost collar 21 serves as a stop for the covered pointed end 11 when the latter is passed into a crevice, recess or the like for cleaning purposes, and as the collar is made of soft material all danger of marring or otherwise injuring the dusted parts is reduced to a minimum. A dusting cloth 25 of tubular form and provided near one end with a hem 26 containing a draw string 27 is fastened in position between the collars 20 and 21 on drawing the draw string 27 outward. It will be noticed that by this arrangement the gathered portion is drawn tight between the collars 20 and 21 and onto the corresponding portion of the covering 14 lying intermediate the collars 20 and 21, and the drawn out portion of the draw string 27 can be readily wrapped several times around the gathered portion so as to more firmly bind the same between the collars 20 and 21. The dusting cloth 25 when in the usual outwardly extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, extends a terminal of the covered tapering portion 11 of the stick, and the dusting cloth when in this position serves for dusting in the usual manner. When it is desired to use the covered tapering end of the stick for cleaning and dusting purposes, as previously explained, then it is only necessary for the user to fold the dusting cloth 25 back onto the stick 10 to expose the covered end of the stick as Well as the collar 21, to allow of using the said portions in the manner above described.
In case the dusting cloth becomes soiled, the draw string can be readily unwrapped and the cloth opened at the gathered portion to disengage it from between the collars 20 and 21. The dusting cloth after being washed can be readily replaced and fastened in position, as above explained.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the duster can be used for doing ordinary dusting such as is required in homes, offices and other places, and the duster can also be used, for thoroughly cleaning corners, narrov spaces, crevices of furniture or other articles without danger of marring or otherwise injuring the dusted parts.
The duster is composed of comparatively few parts, not liable to get easily out of order, and the parts can be readily assembled and fastened in position.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 2-- 1. A duster, comprising a stick having a reduced outer end, a covering of soft material inclosing the said reduced outer end, spaced collars of soft material attached to the inner portion of the said covering, a tubular dusting cloth, and means for gathering and securing the inner end of the cloth between said collars.
2. A duster, comprising a stick having a reduced outer end and provided with an annular groove adjacent the said reduced end, a ring in the said groove, a covering of soft material inclosing the said outer end of the stick and attached at its inner end to the said ring, collars of soft material attached, in spaced relation to the inner portion of the said covering, and a tubular dustingcloth having a draw stringadjacent one end for gathering and securing the end of the cloth between said collars.
