Beit known that we, ELI A. BURT and HER- MEN HARRIs, residents of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, Cleaners, or Polishers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to an improved brush, cleaner, or polisher--one adapted for use as a hat or clothes brush, shoe or stove polisher, blackboard or slate cleaner, or for other like uses--the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which will be a most efficient cleaner or polisher and of such size and shape as to be readily carried about and which will also be adapted for advertising purposes.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating our improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section thereof on the line as m of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is a view in crosssection on the line 3 1 of Fig. 2.

1 represents a front, and 2 a back or rear, sheet of felt, both of the same size, stitched or sewed together all around their edges, as shown at 7, Figs. 2 and 3. Between sheets 1 and 2 is a felt strip 3, which is folded and stitched together at intermediate points, as shown at 8, Fig. 2, to form a series of rounded tongues or folds 4;, projected through slots 5 in sheet 1. The ends of strip 3 are secured to sheets 1 and 2 at their ends by the stitching 7, and a strap 6 is located longitudinally along back sheet 2 and secured at its ends thereto by the stitching 7. This strap 6 may be used as a handheld or back strap for the hand to facilitate the manipulation of the brush and is well adapted to receive advertising matter thereon.

By constructing our improvements as above explained the tongues or folds i and inner sheet 1 form a brush, cleaner, or polisher which will afford great resistance and frictional contact to take up all dirt, dust, lint, &c., and owing to the flexibility of the device can be gotten into narrow and confined spaces to effectually clean or polish them. It is of convenient size and shape to be carried about, is cheap to manufacture, and will last a long time and withstand hard usage.

While we preferably employ felt in the construction of the device, We do not restrict ourselves to such material, as various other flexible material might be employed and a great many changes might be made in the general arrangement and combination of parts without departing from our invention. Hence we do not restrict ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a perforated strip, a second strip secured to the perforated strip, and flexible tongues projecting from said second strip and extending outwardly through the perforations of the perforated strip.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a flexible perforated strip, a second flexible strip secured to the perforated strip and having a series of flexible tongues projecting outwardly through the perforations of the perforated strip.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a strip of flexible material, secured together at intermediate points forming a series of tongues projecting outward from the strip.

a. A device of the class described, comprising a sheet having slots therein, a strip of flexible material secured laterally at intermediate points, forming a series of tongues projecting through the slots in said sheet, and said sheet and strip secured together.

5. A device of the class described, comprising two sheets of flexible material, one of which having slots therein, a strip of flexible material between the sheets, and having a series of tongues projecting through the slots in said sheet, and said sheets and strip secured together.

6. A device of the class described, comprising two felt sheets, the inner sheet having slots therein, a felt strip located between the sheets and stitched at intermediate points forming tongues projected through the slots in said inner sheet, a strap across the outer sheet,

and said sheets, strip, and strap, all sewed or stitched together.
